The renovation of the old house can co to a temporary close.
So far, everything has gone smoothly, and the expected results and goals have been achieved.
It’s just that when saying goodbye, the grandparents felt a bit sentintal.
During this period, Li Younan and Lu Xiaolan ca over every day, making it the happiest ti of the year for the grandparents.
The elderly are like children, their emotions are written all over their faces.
Li Younan comforted them like coaxing children, saying things like "Mom will co over, I’ll co back for the New Year."
When leaving, Li Younan himself felt so indescribable emotions spreading.
He sighed slightly.
However, he quickly adjusted his emotions, and next, he had to prepare for the trip to Chongqing.
For Li Younan, there wasn’t much he needed to prepare, mainly helping Lu Xiaolan get ready.
Lu Xiaolan’s parents didn’t plan to go with her. On one hand, they are quite laid-back, and on the other, Lu Xiaolan didn’t want them to accompany her to university, feeling it’s cooler to go independently or with a brother figure like Li Younan.
It’s worth ntioning that Lu Xiaolan’s best friend and confidante Xu Liya also studies in Chongqing, at Southwest University.
So, Lu Xiaolan asked Li Younan to give Xu Liya a ride as well.
For Li Younan, this was naturally not a problem, as it was just a few more kilograms on the car.
Yet, Lu Xiaolan told Xu Liya, "You know, I had to put in a lot of effort to get him to take you along."
Xu Liya, of course, didn’t believe this, thinking that Brother Nan would definitely not refuse to take her, but she still went along with Lu Xiaolan’s words, thanked her, and promised to treat her to a al in the future.
The plans were set, but the departure ti had to be moved up a bit, as they needed to go to Chengdu first.
Although Chengdu no longer had many must-see spots, Li Younan needed to do sothing there.
He had to reissue his radio operator’s certificate and buy a piece of equipnt. Even though he now held the highest grade C certificate, it wasn’t necessary to buy an extrely powerful device; a 100-watt mobile radio would be sufficient.
The radio association event coincided with the start of Lu Xiaolan’s school term, so he could take care of his businesses then.
There would be competitions, training sessions, and exams at the event, and so equipnt vendors would exhibit and sell radios directly at the site.
Li Younan planned to purchase a piece of equipnt and submit an application for an equipnt inspection, so once his license was issued, he could legally use it.
On the official departure day, in the car, Li Younan briefly explained their reason for going to Chengdu to the two young ladies.
Lu Xiaolan and Xu Liya listened attentively, making Li Younan feel gratified, thinking that indeed, the Gen Z youths have decent scientific literacy.
Then he asked, perhaps unnecessarily, "Do you understand?"
Both answered in unison, "Nope!"
Li Younan sighed slightly, explaining again, "In simple terms, in our country, or rather worldwide, radio frequencies are important strategic resources."
"If everyone starts randomly broadcasting radio signals, aviation, mariti operations, and certain special industries would be greatly affected."
"Therefore, it needs to be controlled. But we ordinary people are interested in this stuff, so what should we do? So, there’s a dedicated frequency range for us ordinary people, and specifically, the state has regulations on the frequencies, equipnt, and power that we can use. You need a license to play with this stuff, and that’s what an operator’s certificate is."
This ti, the two did understand a bit more.
Li Younan continued, "After getting the equipnt, you still can’t imdiately broadcast on the radio. Every piece of radio equipnt must go through an inspection to prove it ets the regulations."
"It’s like driving a car; you need a driver’s license, but at the sa ti, every car has a registration certificate proving that it’s allowed on the road legally. Cars have corresponding driving licenses, different levels of licenses allow you to drive different vehicles, and it’s the sa idea with radios; different grades of licenses allow you to operate different power levels of radios."
Pausing for a mont, Li Younan concluded, "So, my main purposes for going this ti are to reissue my operator’s certificate and to buy a small radio." This ti, the two finally understood.
Subsequently, Xu Liya thought for a bit and asked a soul-searching question, "Brother Nan, but what’s the point of it?"
Li Younan blinked, "Uh..."
Lu Xiaolan also nodded, frowning, "Yeah, what’s the point? Isn’t it just a big walkie-talkie?"
The two were a bit confused, not understanding why use a walkie-talkie when there are phones available that have clearer sound and fewer restrictions.
Li Younan sighed.
As for its usefulness, even Li Younan couldn’t co up with a good answer on the spot.
Radio enthusiasts engage in connections mostly to just announce their call signs, respond in kind, using their unique call thods. Generally, it doesn’t involve much substantive exchange, more like saying, "Are you there? Are you there? I’m the angel from Digimon." And the reply would be, "Received, received, I’m Sasuke from Naruto."
And that’s it.
Generally speaking, there’s no substantial communication.
Speaking of connections, even cell phones now have satellite phone capabilities, which has sowhat reduced the need for ergency communication functions like those seen in 2008.
For a mont, Li Younan didn’t know how to answer the girls’ questions, finally saying a bit irritably, "Why so many questions? Sleep!"
