Until now, Goku hadn't been skilled enough to cast the spells inside.
But after this period of steady progress, his deformation magic had improved; it was basically within reach.
Book in one hand, he flicked the other through the air while rattling off incantations.

Cana, who could drain barrels without a hiccup, clearly saw the new recruit, little Goku, training under the weight.

The log was almost tall enough to block the dorm; it had to weigh close to a hundred tons.
Carrying that for exercise? Even Erza couldn't manage it.
"If he can do that without magic, imagine after he learns Giant Magic."
Everyone knew Goku would study Giant Magic under the master.
