Ariel Morris walked out of the Era Tower, hailed a taxi from the roadside, and got in.
She hoarsely gave the address and sat in the back seat, feeling particularly miserable.
The driver, in his forties, like most taxi drivers, had a protruding beer belly. His thinning hair and dimples at the corners of his mouth gave him a genial appearance.
The driver saw through the rearview mirror that Ariel Morris’ eyes were red and her face pale, and noticing she was drenched, he kindly asked, "Young lady, did you run out in the rain after a fight with your boyfriend?"
Ariel Morris was in a bad mood, turned her head to look out the window, not wanting anyone to see her reddened eyes, and remained silent.
Seeing her like this, the driver realized she was upset and began to comfort her on his own, "Oh dear, young lady, where’s a couple that doesn’t argue? You argue all you want, but don’t run away! If you really disappear, your boyfriend would be so worried! He would search the whole world frantically for you."
Ariel Morris remained silent, but her eyes grew redder, more painful, and swollen.
The driver continued, "I argued with my wife just a few days ago! My wife told to get lost, and , being a big man, if I didn’t leave, wouldn’t that make look weak? I stord out the door in a fit of rage without looking back!"
"As I walked, I thought, if she tells to leave and then wants back, I’ll see if I go back! Whoever goes back is a fool! But as I walked and walked, after more than an hour, I found I was just circling around our neighborhood! I hadn’t gone far at all!"
"It was past eleven at night, and the lights in the neighborhood were quite dim. I sat downstairs at my place, just thinking. She’s so timid and afraid of the dark, would she be hiding under the covers and trembling right now?"
"Our kids work in other cities, so it’s just my wife and I here. She’s so jumpy, she won’t even go to the bathroom alone at ho if the power’s out, I always have to accompany her. Would she be scared being left alone at ho?"
"The more I thought, the more uneasy I beca, and then I was particularly regretful! I an, why would a big man like fuss with a woman? Especially when that woman is my wife! I sat downstairs for another five minutes, thinking about how to apologize so she’d forgive !"
"I finally figured it out, and I couldn’t wait a mont longer, jumped up, and headed ho."
"Just as I took out my key to open the door, there was a click, and the door opened from the inside." The driver chuckled twice at this, with a tone of sweetness and happiness, "It was my wife who opened the door. She stood there stunned for a few seconds when she saw , then she started crying. She cried while complaining that I left her alone at ho and scared her to death. I held her tightly and hastily apologized, swearing I’d never leave her alone again."
Ariel Morris listened quietly, turned to look at the driver in the front seat, parted her lips slightly, but eventually swallowed her words back.
The driver sighed, and with the tone of soone who’s been there, earnestly concluded, "In love, it’s always the one who apologizes first after a fight who loves the deepest. Conversely, the one who suggests breaking up or just runs away after a fight always owes the other. If you’re together, if you love each other, never ever say break up or leave, no matter when or under what circumstances. Because you’ll never feel the pain or impact your leaving or breaking up brings to him."
