1113 Moving Up the Ranks
"…I've returned."
"Hmm?" Just as he'd guided another novice rcenary to the battlefield, Gerald had a slight frown on his face as he heard soone talk to him all of a sudden.
Turning around to look at the source of the voice, his expression imdiately turned into that of surprise once he realized who he was talking to. "You're the one that took the 2-star rcenary mission, right?"
"That would be , yes." Valyr nodded as he faintly smiled.
Seeing the slightly carefree smile on the young man's face, Gerald began to frown once more as he interpreted the smile sowhat differently, prompting him to think about how much ti had passed since they first t.
Coming to the conclusion that only an hour had passed since then, the frown on the man's face beca deeper as he began to inwardly scoff in his mind. 'For a novice rcenary like him to co back this early, he's definitely realized he's bit off more than he could chew.'
'Then again, he could've also realized that killing is not for him,' thought Gerald as he continued his train of thought. 'I expected a bit more from him when I found out his strength allowed him to take on missions for 10-star rcenaries… but where's the point in that if he doesn't even have the courage to kill in the first place?'
Inwardly letting out a sigh, the man glanced at the young man once more before continuing his thoughts. 'Well, I'm not surprised to see that he's realized that the battlefield isn't the right place for him. I can recall a few people who have done the sa thing as him in the past.' '…But seriously. Do you really need to co to the battlefield first to realize sothing like that?'
Taking in a deep breath to compose himself after all that thinking, Gerald already expected the worst-case scenario to happen in the conversation between him and the young man as he looked back at the latter.
Nevertheless, he still harbored a faint hope that the young man in front of him just bit off a bit more than he could chew.
With those thoughts in mind, he went ahead and threw out a question at Valyr. "So, why did you return?"
Expecting either of the two scenarios to co out of the young man's mouth, it was no surprise that Gerald blanked out for a bit when he heard the words that Valyr told him. "I've done the mission. Do I submit it here, or do I have to head back to the base to submit it?"
"Wha…" Not expecting the exact opposite of his train of thought to beco the final answer, it took a while for Gerald to regain his bearings as he asked Valyr once more. "You're done with the mission?"
"Yeah." Valyr nodded in response, only to then bring out the 10 orc fingers he'd cut off back in the battlefield for the man to see.
Seeing as how the young man in front of him showed no signs of fear or aversion whatsoever as he held a set of bloody fingers, Gerald began to let out wry laughter out of nowhere, causing Valyr to look back at him in slight confusion.
"Haah…" Fortunately, the man's laughter stopped not long after as he let out a faint sigh of relief. "I definitely misjudged you."
"…?" Though he was curious as to what Gerald ant by that, Valyr was left with no choice but to push the thought to the side as the man verified the completion of the mission he took up.
Grabbing the set of bloody fingers from the young man, as well as the docunt containing the mission he took, Gerald soon asked Valyr to bring out his identification token, only to infuse the token with his energy soon after.
Whoosh!
"With that, you're just another mission away from becoming a 1-star rcenary." Confirming that the points for promotion was successfully attached to Valyr's token, Gerald eventually gave the mission docunt back to Valyr after stamping it. "Given that you'll take another 2-star rcenary mission, of course."
Taking a brief look at both the stamped docunt and the token, Valyr eventually thanked Gerald before heading back to the military base, prompting the latter to stare at the young man's disappearing silhouette as he soon let out a sigh.
"I should really stop looking at things so negatively," murmured Gerald to himself as he recalled the train of thought he had earlier. "The young man didn't even say anything about backing out, yet you thought he was going to do just that."
Donning a smile filled with self-ridicule, the man inwardly admonished himself for a bit to be a better person, only to let out a sigh soon after.
"In any case, completing a 2-star rcenary mission in that much ti is definitely a sign that young man's gonna go places."
"Ylvar, huh… I wonder what rank he's gonna be in a month's ti?"

After Gerald confird the completion of his mission, Valyr hastily made his way back to the military base with the help of [Azure Dragon Soaring Skies], heading straight for the main mission hall.
Once he was there, Aleos gave him a weird look, asking him if he was having second thoughts about taking the mission in the end.
In response to that, Valyr's eyes flashed with realization as he now understood the random words Gerald said to him back at the barracks.
Briefly donning a bitter smile as he thought about how pessimistic the man was for him, Valyr shook his head at Aleos before giving him the stamped docunt.
Unsurprisingly, it did not take long for Aleos to understand what was going on after receiving the stamped docunt, causing him to look at Valyr with both surprise and excitent.
Talking a bit more after that with Aleos regarding the next mission he planned on taking, the young man eventually left the main mission hall as he headed straight for an inn.
Renting himself a room with the rit points he'd received from the mission, Valyr did not take long to fall asleep as he calculated that he remained awake for the past two weeks.
Waking up at noon the next day, the young man grabbed himself a quick al from the restaurant next door before heading back to the mission hall to grab another mission.
Then, once he was done, he would take a quick break before grabbing another one, allowing his rank to rise at great speeds.
Eventually, an entire week passed in this manner.
