Ugrashrava continued:

“This great history occupies a place among sacred works much as the Self stands among all things worthy of knowledge, and as life itself stands among all things dear to living beings.

“Among histories, it is supre.

“Among sacred traditions, it holds a place of the highest honor.

“For within it are gathered every form of wisdom—philosophy and politics, duty and desire, warfare and peace, human conduct and divine truth. It embraces both the language of scholars and the speech of ordinary people, making profound knowledge accessible to all who seek it.

“Now, O sages, listen as I describe the structure of this vast work and the sequence of its major divisions.

“This history is composed of many books and episodes, each unfolding a different stage of the story.
