While these events were unfolding in the age of kings and heroes, another scene was taking place in the sacred forest of Naimisharanya.
There, a great twelve-year sacrifice was being conducted under the leadership of the revered sage Shaunaka, the head of a renowned lineage of ascetics.
Among the many learned n who had gathered at the sacrifice was Ugrashrava Sauti, son of Lomaharshana. Famous for his vast knowledge of ancient legends and sacred traditions, he had devoted years of his life to mastering the Puranas and the histories of old.
As he stood before the assembled sages with folded hands, he addressed them respectfully.
“Revered sages,” he said, “what would you like to hear? Which tale shall I narrate for you?”
The sages welcod him warmly.
“O son of Lomaharshana,” they replied, “we are eager to listen to noble and uplifting stories, and we know that you are capable of telling them.
But for the mont, our revered teacher Shaunaka is occupied in the sacred fire chamber.
He is a master of divine history. He knows the ancient tales of gods and demons, of n, Nagas, and Gandharvas. He is learned in all the sacred scriptures and the forest teachings. He is steadfast in his vows, truthful in speech, calm in spirit, and respected by all of us.
Therefore, let us wait until he returns.
When our honored teacher has taken his seat among us, you may answer whatever questions he chooses to ask.”
Sauti bowed his head.
“So be it,” he replied. “When the great sage is seated, I shall narrate whatever sacred stories he desires to hear.”
anwhile, Shaunaka completed the rituals that required his attention.
Following the prescribed rites, he offered worship to the gods and libations of water to the ancestors. Only after every sacred duty had been perford correctly did he leave the fire chamber.
He then entered the great sacrificial hall.
There sat the assembly of sages—holy n who had attained spiritual success through severe austerities and unwavering discipline. At the forefront sat Ugrashrava Sauti, waiting respectfully.
The atmosphere was solemn and serene. Sacred fires burned steadily. The chanting of mantras had faded into silence. All eyes turned toward Shaunaka as he approached.
The venerable sage took his place among the officiating priests and learned elders.
Once everyone was properly seated and the assembly had settled, Shaunaka prepared to speak. The gathered sages waited attentively, eager to hear the ancient stories that Sauti would soon recount.
