Chapter 30 — WHEN THE PAST RETURNS WITH BLOOD ON ITS HANDS

The mansion felt colder than usual.

Not because of the temperature...

But because of the danger tightening around it like invisible chains.

Elena stood frozen as the security screen brightened again, focusing on the man wearing a hood, his face angled up just enough for the cara to catch his features.

She knew that face.

She had served him food.

She had collected plates from his table.

He had always smiled politely, always tipped well, always acted friendly.

Never threatening.

Never dangerous.

But the man on the screen now—

He wasn’t smiling politely.

He was smiling like a predator.

"Elena," Adrian said softly, without taking his eyes off the screen, "tell exactly who he is."

Her hands trembled slightly. "His na is Ryan. Ryan Keller."

Adrian’s jaw flexed.

"Did he ever approach you outside work?"

She thought hard.

The mories surged back like a dark wave—late nights at the restaurant, dim lights, tired feet, and his eyes following her more than she realized.

"Elena," Adrian repeated, more firmly this ti, "did he ever speak to you outside the workplace?"

She nodded slowly.

"Yes... once."

Her breath hitched. "He waited for after closing. But he said he wanted to return a scarf soone dropped in the restaurant. I thought it was innocent..."

Adrian turned to her sharply.

"And was the scarf yours?"

Elena’s lips parted in horror.

"No."

Adrian’s face hardened with icy rage.

"That ans he watched you long before Viper ever appeared," he said. "That ans he was already obsessed."

The realization made Elena’s throat tighten painfully.

Ryan Keller wasn’t a stranger.

He wasn’t a random worker.

He had followed her.

Watched her.

Waited.

And now—

he was standing outside her husband’s mansion.

"He’s not alone," Lucas said grimly from the doorway. "We counted three others, all within proximity of the south entrance. One is disabling the motion lights."

Elena felt Adrian’s hand brush her arm—

protectively.

Possessively.

Reassuringly.

"Take Elena to the inner room," Adrian ordered Lucas.

Elena imdiately grabbed Adrian’s sleeve.

"No. I’m not leaving you."

He looked at her, really looked at her, with eyes dark as midnight.

"Elena," he whispered, "this is no longer a ga. These n are trained. They are here on orders."

"I don’t care," she said breathlessly. "I’m not hiding while you face them alone."

Adrian’s jaw clenched.

"Elena—"

"No!"

Her voice cracked. "Please don’t shut out. Not now."

For a mont, an intense silence wrapped around them.

The danger outside didn’t disappear—

it simply paused, waiting.

Adrian exhaled slowly, his fingers curling around her wrist, grounding her.

"Fine," he said at last, his voice deep, solemn. "But you stay behind at all tis. You listen to every command I give. And if I say run—"

"I run," she whispered, finishing it for him.

The look he gave her then wasn’t cold, or angry, or distant.

It was terrified.

Adrian Kane—

the man who feared nothing—

feared losing her.

---

THE STORM IN THE SHADOWS

The mansion lights flickered again.

Lucas checked his tablet.

"Sir, the south caras are down."

Adrian nodded once.

"They’re forcing a breach point. They want to draw us there."

"Do we follow?" Lucas asked.

"No," Adrian murmured. "We stay exactly where we are until we know their real target."

Elena’s breath hitched.

"," she whispered.

Adrian didn’t argue.

He didn’t sugarcoat.

He simply turned his head to her, eyes softening for a second that felt stolen from ti.

"Yes," he said quietly. "You’re the target."

Her stomach twisted painfully.

"Why ? What do they want?"

Adrian stepped closer, touching her cheek with the gentlest brush of his thumb.

"Because Viper wants leverage," he said. "And the man outside... wants you for a different reason entirely."

Elena swallowed hard.

"What reason?"

Adrian’s voice was a whisper of danger.

"Obsession."

Her heart thudded.

Before she could respond, Lucas stiffened.

"Sir," he said sharply, "movent on the east side. Multiple signatures."

Adrian turned to the screen—

And froze.

Not because of the intruders.

But because one of them had stepped close enough for the cara to zoom in.

Ryan Keller’s smile widened.

And his lips moved silently.

Elena’s heart hamred as she read them.

"Found you."

Adrian moved instantly.

"Lucas—seal the east entrance and bring the guards to full alert—now!"

Lucas ran out of the room.

Adrian grabbed Elena’s hand.

"Stay close."

He led her out of the secure room, down the hallway, and toward the grand staircase.

But they only made it halfway when—

BOOM!

A loud crash echoed through the mansion—

followed by shouts.

Elena flinched.

Adrian pulled her close, shielding her as dust shook from the ceiling.

"They’ve breached the side door," Adrian muttered.

Elena’s eyes widened.

"Then we need to get to safety!"

Adrian’s grip tightened around her waist.

"I am the safest place for you, Elena," he said fiercely. "Stay with ."

---

THE CONFRONTATION

They reached the bottom of the stairs—

and that was when they heard footsteps.

Fast.

Heavy.

Approaching.

Adrian pulled Elena behind a marble column and raised his hand, signaling silence.

Elena held her breath.

The footsteps drew nearer—

echoing against the walls.

Slow.

Calculated.

Too calm.

Then—

A voice.

Low.

Smooth.

Chillingly familiar.

"Mrs. Kane..."

Elena’s blood froze.

Ryan Keller stepped into view—

hood down, eyes glinting with sothing twisted.

"You look even prettier than before."

Elena stumbled back, but Adrian’s arm tightened protectively around her.

Adrian stepped out from behind the column—

Cold.

Deadly.

Unshakable.

"If you take one more step toward my wife," Adrian said, his voice quiet but dangerous, "you will not leave this mansion alive."

Ryan smiled wider.

"Your wife?" he repeated slowly. "Oh, Adrian... you don’t deserve her."

Elena trembled.

"Ryan... please leave," she whispered.

His eyes snapped to her, his smile fading into sothing hollow and cruel.

"I’ve been watching you," he said.

"For months. Years. You never noticed . Not once."

Adrian’s jaw clenched.

So did his fists.

"You should have stayed invisible," Adrian growled.

Ryan tilted his head.

"And you should have stayed single."

Adrian moved first.

It wasn’t a punch.

It wasn’t a warning.

It was an attack ant to end things.

Ryan dodged, fast—too fast—confirming he was trained.

They collided in the center of the hallway—

Adrian’s fist slamming into Ryan’s jaw.

Ryan’s elbow striking Adrian’s ribs.

The sound echoed through the mansion like thunder.

Elena froze, her hands shaking violently.

"Adrian!" she cried.

Adrian turned his head just enough to shout—

"Elena—RUN!"

She hesitated—

Just one second.

But that one second cost everything.

Because Ryan spun, grabbed her from behind, and dragged her back against his chest—

cold fingers pressing against her throat.

Elena let out a strangled gasp.

Adrian’s eyes widened with pure, unfiltered fury.

"Let. Her. Go."

Ryan smirked.

"I told you," he whispered into Elena’s ear, "you don’t deserve her."

Elena struggled, but Ryan tightened his grip.

"You scream," he hissed, "and soone dies."

Adrian took a step forward—

and Ryan pressed sothing cold and tallic against Elena’s side.

Elena’s breath hitched.

A knife.

A sharp, thin blade glinted near her skin.

"Adrian," she whispered, terrified, "please—"

Adrian raised both hands slowly.

Not surrender.

Control.

"Elena," he said softly, eyes locked on hers, "look at ."

She did.

"Breathe," he whispered. "I’m right here."

Ryan laughed quietly.

"Oh, how romantic."

Elena felt the blade press harder against her ribs.

"Ryan, please," she begged, "you don’t have to do this—"

"But I do," he whispered. "Because he took you from . And now—"

He lowered the blade—

"—I’m going to take sothing from him."

Elena squeezed her eyes shut.

Adrian’s expression shifted.

From anger.

To ice.

To death itself.

"Let her go," Adrian said, voice dropping dangerously low, "and I’ll let you walk out alive."

Ryan smiled without fear.

"You won’t shoot. You love her too much."

Adrian’s lips curled into a cold, lethal smirk.

"No," he said softly.

"I won’t shoot."

He took one slow step forward.

"But she will."

Ryan froze.

"What—"

A soft click echoed behind them.

Ryan turned his head—

Just enough to see Lydia

standing at the end of the hallway,

hands steady,

aiming a gun directly at his head.

"You picked the wrong girl to stalk," Lydia growled.

Ryan’s grip faltered—

Elena broke free—

Adrian grabbed her instantly—

And Lydia fired.
