Chapter 31 — THE NIGHT HE FINALLY BREAKS

The atmosphere inside the Kane mansion had shifted over the past three days—subtly at first, then overwhelmingly. It lingered in every corner, in every breath, as if the house itself sensed a brewing storm. Even the chandeliers seed to hang heavier, their lights dimr, muted by a tension that refused to fade.

Elena felt it most through Adrian.

He was present—physically—but emotionally he was sowhere far, far away.

He barely spoke to her. Barely looked at her. He moved like a man made of stone, controlled, unreadable, silent... yet carrying a pressure inside him that threatened to shatter the mont anyone touched it.

His silence was not coldness—it was suppression.

Suppression of sothing he didn’t want to feel.

Sothing he didn’t know how to deal with.

The staff sensed it too. Their movents were quieter, their expressions tight. Doors closed softly. Footsteps were lighter. Conversations were whispers.

Everyone was waiting.

For what, Elena didn’t know.

Until tonight.

Tonight, everything broke.

---

She had just finished reviewing reports in her room—trying to distract herself from the suffocating atmosphere—when a sharp sound echoed down the hallway.

A crash.

Then another.

The unmistakable shatter of glass.

Elena’s heartbeat jumped instantly. She froze, listening.

A third crash. Louder. Violent.

And then—Adrian’s voice. Rough, frustrated, almost wounded.

Without thinking, Elena ran toward the sound.

It ca from his office.

Her breath caught when she reached the door—half open, a sliver of warm light spilling into the dark hallway.

She pushed it wider... and her chest tightened painfully.

Adrian stood in the middle of the room, breathing hard.

The destruction around him was breathtaking.

A glass decanter lay shattered against the wall, amber liquid dripping down like tears. Two heavy books were overturned on the floor. The wooden tray on his desk was flipped over. His suit jacket was crumpled in a corner, and papers were scattered like fallen leaves.

His hair—a symbol of his endless discipline—was disheveled.

His shirt sleeves were rolled up, veins visible along his arms.

This wasn’t the Adrian she knew.

This was a man unraveling.

"Adrian..." she whispered carefully.

He turned toward her sharply.

His eyes—

God, his eyes were a storm.

Sothing dark and raw swirled inside them, emotions he was fighting desperately to bury yet failing miserably to contain.

"What?" he asked, his voice low and cracked. "What do you want?"

Elena stood at the doorway, not wanting to push him but unable to walk away.

"I heard the noise," she said softly. "I was worried—"

"Worried?" He gave a harsh, humorless laugh that twisted sothing inside her. "Worried about ?"

"Yes," she answered honestly.

He stared at her as if the word hurt him.

He stepped toward her slowly—one step, then two—until she could see the tremor in his jaw.

"Do you want to know what I hate, Elena?"

Her breath caught.

She knew he wasn’t going to scream. Adrian Kane didn’t scream. His emotions were knives—sharp, controlled, ant to cut quietly.

"I hate this," he said, voice low. "I hate that I tried to keep everything between us strictly business. A contract. A na. A shield."

His hand moved to his chest.

"And yet sohow, you got inside here."

Elena’s lips parted.

"I hate," he continued, his voice shaking, "that every ti I force myself to stay away, every ti I try to remind myself of what this marriage was supposed to be... I fail."

He dragged a breath.

"And I hate that I don’t know how to make it stop."

She swallowed hard.

"What are you trying to make stop?" she whispered.

"You," he whispered back. "You. Everything about you. The way you look at . The way you walk into a room and I forget the world. The way your silence is louder than everyone else’s voice."

Elena felt her pulse race.

He wasn’t yelling. He wasn’t threatening.

He was confessing.

And that terrified her more.

Adrian moved a hand through his hair in frustration. "I thought distance would help. I thought I needed control. But instead..."

He looked at her with an expression that made her heart stutter.

"...instead, I’m falling deeper. And I don’t know what that ans for either of us."

Elena’s breath shook.

"Adrian..."

He took another step, now close enough for her to feel the warmth radiating off him.

"But the worst part?" he whispered. "The part that makes feel like I’m losing my mind?"

His voice dropped to a pained murmur.

"I am falling for you, Elena. And I don’t think you feel anything for at all."

Her breath left her.

The room spun for a mont.

Adrian Kane—cold, untouchable, ruthless—was standing in front of her looking like a man stripped of all defenses.

She had never seen him like this. Never imagined he could be this undone.

"I don’t trust you," he admitted. "I know you’re hiding sothing. I know your past is darker than you let on. I know you didn’t step into this marriage as innocently as you claim."

Elena closed her eyes briefly.

He was right.

But he didn’t know the full truth.

Not yet.

"But even knowing that," he continued softly, "I still want you. More than is logical. More than is safe."

A painful warmth spread through her chest.

He looked at her like she was both salvation and danger.

"I avoid you," he confessed, "because being near you makes forget every reason I had to keep myself at a distance."

Elena stepped closer before she could stop herself.

"Tell what happened today," she whispered. "Why are you like this? What pushed you to this breaking point?"

He inhaled slowly.

Then, finally, he let the truth slip out.

"My father," he said, voice nearly hollow. "He wants to end this marriage."

Elena’s heart tightened.

"He thinks you’re a threat to the Kane na. He believes you’ll cause scandal. He believes you’re after sothing."

She didn’t move. She didn’t breathe.

"And today," Adrian continued, "he demanded I cut ties with you before things get ’worse.’"

Elena’s eyes softened.

"And what did you tell him?"

Adrian looked at her intensely.

"I told him no."

The words echoed in the room.

"I told him," he said slowly, "that no one touches you. That no one threatens you. That you stay my wife... because I choose that."

Elena’s throat closed.

Adrian stepped toward her, closing the remaining distance.

His hand lifted—hesitant, vulnerable—and he brushed his fingers against her cheek.

"Elena," he whispered, "don’t make regret protecting you."

Her chest ached—deep, conflicted, overwhelming.

Because here was a man she had sworn to destroy.

A man tied to the past she couldn’t forgive.

A man whose family had a hand in everything Lydia suffered.

And yet—

This man

This version of Adrian

This broken, honest, unguarded Adrian...

He was soone she had never prepared her heart for.

The truth weighed on her tongue, heavy, poisonous, real.

But she couldn’t speak it.

Not now.

Not when he was looking at her like she was the only person who had the power to save him—or completely ruin him.

Sothing between them shifted.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Dangerously.

Outside the mansion, the night deepened.

Inside Adrian’s office, two lives tangled even further, tied by truths unspoken and feelings neither could control.

This was the night Adrian Kane broke for the first ti.

And the night Elena realized...

her revenge would never be as simple as she planned.
