"How are we going to handle this?"
Hunter seed sowhat troubled.
He was a sniper with only an SVD in hand.
Song Heping had an M4A1 assault rifle.
The Vanguard Team that passed by just now had at least a dozen people. They probably saw the scene at the crossroads and knew that their few n were tough to provoke, so the Vanguard sent over ten people, exceeding the usual size of a 2-4 man Vanguard Group.
"They definitely have a large force behind them, and I estimate they'll arrive soon. Maybe we should change directions and retreat. If they can't find us, that's good enough."
Hunter's idea wasn't bad.
After all, with only two of them, evading was the safest choice.
Only Song Heping felt uncomfortable inside.
Grey Wolf was severely wounded, and Song Heping had a grievance he couldn't swallow, unable to pass up making the enemy pay.
"Let's go!"
Seeing him bow his head in silence, Hunter checked his watch and urged, "The main force behind us will probably arrive soon. If we start fighting with the Vanguard Team and get stuck, we are certain to die."
Hearing this, Song Heping's eyes suddenly sparkled, "I've got a plan."
...
Within less than twenty minutes, Harold followed the "Cobra" squad to the location where Song Heping was previously reading the map.
They were moving at a forced march all the way.
He had to admit that these locals from Myanmar were far more familiar with the mountainous area than he was; he couldn't have kept up if it were him.
The mountain roads were difficult to navigate at night.
The temperature in the mountains dropped sharply, and with the frantic chase, Harold felt hot inside but his skin was ice-cold, experiencing a sensation of both fire and ice.
More unsettling than heavy rain were the poisonous snakes and insects hidden in dark corners. These creatures were masters of camouflage, virtually invisible at first glance, but a single step might land directly on a poison snake, or while walking, one might feel a chilling touch on their neck and pull off a colorfully patterned snake.
If you see a sickly big tree, it's best to avoid it because there are vampire-like tree locusts waiting eagerly—these disgusting little creatures live on the tree, sustaining themselves by sucking sap, and if any beast or person passes under the tree, they would drop onto them like unnoticed paratroopers.
Don't underestimate the combat ability of tree locusts; even if they are fully fed and plump, they will cling onto your body and refuse to let go.
Boom—
Suddenly, a muffled explosion sounded.
Then a scream.
"Ow—"
Soone went down.
Everyone was startled, sporadically taking out their guns and seeking cover.
They all thought they were under attack.
But scattering only made it worse, and then they heard another explosion.
Boom—
Boom—
The sounds were low.
Not gunfire.
"Butterfly Mines!"
Harold realized and shouted, "Don't run! This place is mined! Watch your feet for Butterfly Mines, those things are tiny!"
Butterfly Mines.
This word entered Wu Shengwen's ears, making his scalp tingle.
In the jungle, he'd rather face a Tripwire Mine than these minuscule, toy-like Butterfly Mines.
"Nobody move!"
Following Wu Shengwen's loud warning, all mbers of the "Cobra" squad stopped in their tracks, each crouching awkwardly on the spot like they were constipated, daring not to move.
"What's going on?!" Harold demanded, "Didn't you have Vanguard up ahead? They just passed by less than half an hour ago, how could there be mines here!?"
Wu Shengwen was full of question marks right now.
He couldn't understand it either.
Could it be they took the wrong path?
But they had been keeping in contact with the Vanguard Team, and it was indeed this path. Wu Shengwen was very familiar with this area of the road, and the Vanguard knew it even better. No one would make such a basic mistake.
He then turned around, took the radio from the signal soldier, and began to call out to the Vanguard Team.
"Wen Nai, Wen Nai, respond if you hear ."
The channel was silent.
No response.
"Wen Nai, Wen Nai."
Still, dead silence.
Soldiers from the "Cobra" special squad scattered on the trail realized sothing might be wrong.
Just over twenty minutes ago, they were still in contact.
"Why can't we reach them all of a sudden?"
"Definitely not because of a signal problem."
"This place isn't losing or getting interference from signals because of terrain."
"No response ans only one thing, the Vanguard squad has t with trouble."
"But Wu Shengwen could never believe that the elite Vanguard squad he sent out could be annihilated silently.
"Zuowen, take a few n and clear the mines quickly!"
Wu Shengwen imdiately issued an order to his subordinates.
He seed to realize that sothing terrible had happened.
If the enemy could place mines between the main force and the Vanguard squad, it ant that the enemy...
was capable of following the Vanguard squad...
But by the ti he realized this, it was already too late.
Judging by the lack of response from the Vanguard squad, it was likely that the n ahead had encountered trouble.
After instructing Zuowen to clear the mines, Wu Shengwen couldn't help but retort to Harold, "Captain, just who exactly did you provoke tonight?!"
"They weren't coming for us!" Harold wouldn't take the bla and imdiately shifted it, "It was your financier Batchai who brought these people here. Their target is Batchai! Our n just happened to be there and got involved!"
"Hmph!"
Wu Shengwen sneered, "If they were not after you, why would they kidnap your liaison officer here?"
He was referring to Joyce.
With that said, Wu Shengwen no longer cared about the face of the Seal Team mbers in front of him.
Pointing to his own head, he said, "Though I didn't grow up on milk and bread, I'm not stupid, Captain!"
Harold was at a loss for words.
By now, shifting the bla seed no longer possible. He had intended to intercept the squad that attacked Batchai's birthday party, but now, not only was he unable to achieve his goal, he even lost so of his own n.
"Captain Wu, Joyce had decided just this afternoon to visit Batchai's residence and et him. It was a last-minute decision, with no chance of a leak. So, those people were definitely not there for Joyce, but for Batchai!"
Wu Shengwen sneered again, "Then explain why they killed Batchai and others yet took only Joyce?"
"Now is not the ti to pinpoint responsibility! We should collaborate wholeheartedly. We can clarify the target once we capture an enemy!"
Harold was extrely irritated by Wu Shengwen's persistent attitude.
But now he had to rely on these Civilian Military personnel and could only set aside their differences for now, prioritizing cooperation.
Zuowen, taking a few soldiers and ard with flashlights, began to search along the narrow path.
Though turning on flashlights in such a place was akin to setting up a target for bullet invitations.
But he had no choice.
Without the flashlights, they couldn't see the small Butterfly Mines scattered on the ground.
He could skip clearing other areas, but this had to be cleared, to ensure that at least the next fifty ters were safe for the main force to continue advancing.
After all, it wasn't realistic for the enemy to cover the entire smuggling path with Butterfly Mines.
They soon found three Butterfly Mines and moved forward by more than twenty ters. At this pace, they could quickly clear a path.
Suddenly, the soldier at the front raised his fist, staring intensely at the ground.
The mine-clearing team stopped.
Leading them was an experienced soldier, who stopped because he noticed sothing odd about the leaves on the ground.
He turned back and made several hand signals to Zuowen and the others.
Following that, Zuowen and the others pulled back, leaving two to move forward.
The three crouched down, two kept watch, and the experienced soldier himself drew a dagger and stabbed it obliquely into the ground ahead, probing several directions.
Thunk—
The tip of the knife suddenly hit a hard object.
The experienced soldier's eyes lit up, and he poked a few more tis around before gently lifting the soft soil that covered the hard object, then prying it lightly.
A small, quaint anti-infantry mine flipped out from the soil, appearing before him.
He didn't attempt to disarm it but retracted his dagger and reported to Wu Shengwen, "Found their trap mines!"
Wu Shengwen said, "We can't wait any longer, you guys try to find a detour, see if you can bypass this area, don't use this path, after going around one or two kiloters, co back to this path!"
The experienced soldier replied, "Okay, that's also a solution."
Wu Shengwen was obviously impatient, "Hurry up, no dallying."
The experienced soldier changed direction, no longer probing that path, as apparently the enemy had laid quite a few there and continuing on that route would be uncertain about timing.
He cut a tree branch with his dagger, stuck it at the edge of the minefield as a marker, then stood up and gestured to the other two Vanguards. Three of them bypassed and carefully proceeded through the nearby bushes and forest, trying to go around.
Walking about thirty ters away from the path, they didn't encounter any new mines.
Finally, the n managed to ease their nerves and began to pick up their pace moving forward.
"It looks like they're safe, and we can bypass the path they took..."
Wu Shengwen, not far behind the Vanguard Group, let out a sigh of relief, about to order everyone to take a detour, when suddenly, an explosion erupted ahead.
In the dark forest, a burst of fla flashed.
Bang—
