The celebration gradually split into smaller conversations as the evening settled in.

Phil cornered Jay into discussing "digital branding opportunities."

Mitchell started debating logo design with Haley despite knowing nothing about marketing.

Luke attempted to pitch a sneaker sponsorship strategy that sounded legally dubious.

Normal family chaos.

Claire eventually escaped first.

Gael noticed when she slipped quietly through the upstairs hallway toward the balcony overlooking the backyard.

Not avoiding people exactly.

Just decompressing.

A few minutes later he stepped outside too.

The balcony lights cast a soft glow across the railing while music drifted faintly upward from downstairs.

Claire stood near the edge holding wine in one hand, heels abandoned beside the chair nearby.

"You disappeared," he said.

She glanced sideways toward him before looking back down at the backyard.

"I'm overstimulated."

"That seems hereditary."

A small smile appeared briefly before fading again.

Below them, Haley laughed loudly at sothing Gloria said near the pool.

The sound carried clearly through the warm evening air.

Claire watched her daughter for a long mont.

"She really changed fast."

There was pride in the sentence.

But also adjustnt.

Gael leaned lightly beside the railing.

"She found sothing that belongs to her."

Claire nodded slowly.

"That's the weird part about parenting." Her fingers traced absentmindedly around the stem of the wine glass. "You spend years trying to help your kids beco independent." A quiet laugh escaped her. "Then one day they actually do it and your house starts feeling temporary."

Claire glanced toward him again.

"You know, Haley listens to you differently than she listens to anyone else."

"How so?"

"She trusts you." Claire shrugged lightly. "Not just emotionally. She trusts your judgnt."

Claire sounded relieved by that now, instead of protective.

A major shift from earlier.

"She needed sobody who saw more in her than just…" Claire gestured vaguely toward the house below. "Pretty chaos."

The affection in the phrase softened it imdiately.

Then she laughed quietly to herself.

"I really underestimated her for a while."

"You expected her to beco you."

Claire looked toward him sharply for a second.

Not offended.

Caught.

"That was annoyingly accurate."

The honesty lingered between them afterward.

Below the balcony, Gloria crossed near the pool speaking to guests while Jay watched her with visible affection from the patio chair.

Claire noticed them too.

Her expression shifted slightly as she watched the couple.

Thoughtful.

Complicated.

Then she spoke more quietly.

"I think people get lonely in marriages without realizing it imdiately."

Gael looked toward her more closely now.

Claire stayed focused on the backyard below.

"You get busy," she continued softly. "Kids, schedules, routines, responsibilities." A faint smile touched her mouth. "One day you realize you've spent six months discussing grocery lists and plumbing."

That sounded personal enough already.

But then:

"And when sobody suddenly pays attention to you again…" She paused briefly. "It feels bigger than it should."

There it was.

Not confession.

Recognition.

Claire finally looked toward him fully after saying it.

And for a second neither of them spoke.

Because now the conversation wasn't theoretical anymore.

Then footsteps echoed faintly from the hallway inside.

The mont broke instantly.

Claire stepped back from the railing almost automatically just as Alex appeared in the doorway holding her phone.

"There you both are." She looked between them briefly. "Dad's trying to explain crypto to Gloria again, and I think sobody needs to intervene before she smacks his head."

Claire laughed imdiately, the tension dissolving naturally.

"See?" She pointed toward the hallway. "Marriage."
