Modern Family: More than Family Chapter 118 118: New Routine

Monday morning started before sunrise for Haley.

Which still felt unnatural enough to qualify as oppression.

She stumbled into Gael's kitchen wearing her professional clothes, carrying coffee and two garnt bags while reviewing campaign notes on her phone simultaneously.

"Why am I awake?" she muttered.

"You have employnt."

"I miss being decorative."

Gael hid a smile while finishing an email on the tablet beside the counter.

The interesting thing was that the old Haley would've complained until leaving.

Now she complained while continuing to work.

She dropped the garnt bags onto the couch before walking over beside him.

"You're going downtown today?"

"Investor eting."

"Can I co after work?"

Lately, Haley had started naturally integrating herself into his city life instead of treating it like a separate world.

Gael looked up from the tablet.

"You have work tomorrow."

"That's not an answer." She leaned down and kissed him briefly.

Then the gate opened.

Claire stepped into the backyard carrying coffee and visible Monday exhaustion.

"You two are awake entirely too early."

Haley pointed accusingly.

"Employnt ruined my life."

Claire looked at the campaign notes spread across the counter.

"No, ambition ruined your life."

Claire's tone toward Haley had changed completely over the past month.

Less correction.

More respect.

Like she'd finally recalibrated how she viewed her daughter.

Then her attention shifted toward Gael briefly.

The conversation from the patio two nights earlier lingered quietly underneath everything now.

Then Claire noticed the garnt bags next.

"What's tonight?"

"Brand event," Haley answered while digging through the fridge. "One of the agencies invited the interns."

That imdiately caught Claire's attention.

"A real networking event?"

Haley looked absurdly pleased by that phrasing.

"Yes. A real networking event."

Claire smiled despite herself.

"That's actually impressive."

Then she paused slightly.

"You'll need a better blazer."

Haley blinked.

"…Was that an insult?"

A few minutes later Alex wandered through the gate half-awake with application folders pressed against her chest.

Nobody questioned her presence anymore.

At this point the two houses functioned like a shared ecosystem.

Alex stopped when she saw everyone already gathered.

"Why is there energy happening before eight?"

"Haley beca a businesswoman," Claire replied.

"That explains the suffering."

Haley threw a napkin at her while laughing.

And for a few minutes the kitchen filled with overlapping conversation again:

coffee brewing,

Alex complaining about recomndation letters,

Claire reviewing Haley's event outfit ntally,

Haley talking about influencer analytics like a real adult sohow.

Gael watched the scene quietly for a second.

Everybody around him had started unconsciously building him into their routines.

Then Haley glanced toward him again while grabbing her bag.

"So tonight?"

Small smile.

Expectation already there.

Gael nodded once.

"I'll pick you up after work."

Her expression softened instantly.

Then she disappeared out the door energized despite the early hour.

Claire watched her leave before speaking quietly.

"She's happier lately."

And for one suspended mont, the atmosphere shifted subtly again between them.

Because both of them knew:

part of that happiness ca from him.

Then Alex interrupted while flipping through scholarship papers.

"If anyone needs , I'll be dissolving psychologically in the dining room."

And just like that, the tension dissolved back into morning chaos again.
