By seven-thirty that evening, the city had fully transford.
Glass towers glowing gold against the skyline.
Traffic reflecting in endless ribbons below.
Music drifting upward from rooftop venues and hotel terraces.
Haley loved nights like this now.
Not because they felt glamorous.
Because they made her feel like she was finally entering the adult world instead of standing outside it.
She stepped out of the agency building carrying her bags in one hand and imdiately spotted Gael waiting beside the car across the street.
The expression on her face changed instantly.
One of the won from her internship team noticed it too.
"Oh," she said quietly while watching Haley cross toward him. "That's the boyfriend?"
Haley grinned without slowing down.
"Yep."
There was pride in that answer.
A few minutes later they pulled into the valet entrance of the rooftop venue hosting the brand networking event.
Fashion executives,
creative directors,
social dia teams,
models,
investors.
Different world from suburban dinners entirely.
Haley adjusted her blazer while looking up at the building lights.
"I still feel like soone's going to realize I snuck in."
"You were invited."
"I know, but it still feels like the old days."
He glanced sideways at her.
She imdiately laughed.
"Okay, fair. I deserved that."
The repetitive banter rhythms had finally started fading into more natural dialogue again.
Inside, the rooftop buzzed with layered conversations and polished energy.
Haley slipped into it almost effortlessly now.
That stood out imdiately.
Not because she transford into soone different.
Because she stopped doubting herself.
Within twenty minutes she was already deep in conversation with two campaign coordinators discussing audience engagent strategy while Gael spoke briefly with an investor near the bar.
Watching Haley from a distance tonight made sothing obvious:
She belonged here independently now.
Not as his girlfriend tagging along.
As herself.
Then soone touched lightly against his arm.
"Didn't expect to see you again so soon."
Gael turned.
The brunette from the previous investor event stood beside him holding champagne, sharp-eyed and confident as before.
"Rachel."
"You rembered." She smiled slightly. "I'm impressed."
Before the conversation could continue, Haley appeared beside him naturally, one hand resting lightly against his arm.
"Hi," she said easily.
Rachel's attention shifted between them once before understanding clicked.
"Oh. You're Haley."
Haley noticed the familiarity imdiately but stayed composed.
"It sounds like you've heard of ."
Rachel smiled knowingly.
"He talks about you more than you think."
That caught Haley slightly off guard.
Just enough for Gael to notice.
Rachel extended a hand politely.
"Rachel Morgan. Venture partner."
Haley shook it smoothly.
"Intern with temporary caffeine addiction."
Rachel laughed imdiately.
Good recovery.
Then one of Haley's coworkers called her from across the rooftop.
"Haley, they want your opinion on the creator shortlist."
The fact that sentence existed visibly pleased her.
She looked toward Gael briefly.
"I'll be back."
Then she disappeared smoothly back into the crowd and conversation.
Rachel watched her go.
"She's smart."
"She notices emotional dynamics very quickly."
Then Rachel glanced toward him before speaking again.
"Careful with that."
Just observation from sobody older and experienced enough to recognize complicated situations before they exploded.
Then she smiled lightly and drifted back into the rooftop crowd.
Leaving the sentence behind her.
