Now reading: Chapter 17 17: The Whole Family from Modern Family: More than Family, a Mature novel by disarmednose.

Sunday afternoon arrived with enough food to feed a small country and enough family noise to qualify as a public event.

Gael stood beside Haley near the backyard gate of Jay Pritchett's house while she adjusted the collar of his dark shirt unnecessarily.

"You're nervous," she said imdiately.

"I'm eting your grandfather-level relatives."

"That is not how family works."

"It feels accurate."

Haley laughed before grabbing his hand and pulling him toward the backyard.

The mont they stepped outside, the full chaos of the extended family hit him at once:

music playing near the patio,

Luke chasing Lily with a water gun,

Phil arguing with soone about grilling techniques,

and Gloria's voice carrying effortlessly over all of it.

Real.

Still surreal sohow.

"Everybody!" Phil announced dramatically the second he spotted them. "The young couple has arrived!"

"I hate when you say things like that," Haley muttered.

Too late.

Multiple heads turned.

And suddenly, Gael Ronin found himself standing face-to-face with nearly the entire remaining cast of Modern Family.

Weird.

Still deeply weird.

Gloria Delgado-Pritchett smiled first.

"Oh, finally." She walked over imdiately and kissed Haley's cheek before looking Gael over openly. "This is the famous boyfriend."

"That sounds threatening," Gael answered.

Gloria laughed warmly.

"I like him already."

Of course she did.

Even in the show, Gloria tended to respond well to confidence and composure.

And unfortunately, she was even prettier in person than television ever captured.

Gael firmly ignored that thought.

Beside her, Jay Pritchett studied him with open skepticism while holding a beer.

This one mattered more.

Jay didn't care about charm.

Jay cared about:

competence,

stability,

and whether soone acted like an idiot around his family.

"So," Jay said bluntly, "you're the app kid."

"Apparently."

Jay narrowed his eyes slightly.

"Hm."

Haley groaned quietly beside him.

"There's the judgnt."

"It's not judgnt," Jay replied. "It's an evaluation."

"That's literally worse."

Gael smiled faintly.

"I get that a lot."

That answer earned the smallest twitch of amusent from Jay.

Tiny.

But there.

"Okay, I need details," Caron Tucker announced dramatically while appearing beside them seemingly from nowhere. "Because Mitchell refuses to gossip properly."

"I refuse because you treat family information like reality television," Mitchell Pritchett corrected while walking over carrying drinks.

Mitchell imdiately looked Gael over carefully.

Not hostile.

Just analytical.

The sa expression Claire wore sotis.

"You seem surprisingly normal," Mitchell admitted.

"That sounded backhanded."

"It was ant positively."

Cam placed a hand against his chest dramatically.

"Oh my God, he has the exact right amount of sarcasm for this family."

"Please don't encourage him," Haley muttered.

Too late again.

Cam was already emotionally invested.

anwhile, Manny approached with the serious confidence of soone three decades older than reality.

"I've heard impressive things about you," Manny said while extending a hand.

Gael shook it carefully.

"That sentence from a thirteen-year-old feels unsettling."

Manny sighed heavily.

"A burden I carry daily."

Gael almost laughed.

Yeah.

Still Manny.

Nearby, Claire watched the introductions quietly while standing beside Phil near the grill.

There was sothing strangely satisfying about seeing Gael adapt naturally to the rest of the family instead of looking uncomfortable or performative.

Most of Haley's boyfriends either:

tried too hard,

acted intimidated,

or beca disasters within twenty minutes.

Gael just… fit.

The realization settled unexpectedly warmly in her chest.

"You're staring," Phil whispered beside her.

"I'm observing."

"That's the staring version adults use."

Claire rolled her eyes.

"Please focus on not poisoning everyone with chicken."

"I'm an artist."

"You're holding lighter fluid."

Across the yard, Gloria had already pulled Gael into conversation while Haley grabbed drinks from the patio table.

"You are much calr than I expected. Usually, young rich n are…" She waved a hand vaguely. "How should I put it..."

"Obnoxious"

"Exactly." Gloria laughed softly.

Easy.

Natural.

Gael noticed imdiately how effortlessly social she was in person.

Warm without feeling fake.

Confident without trying.

"You make Haley happy," Gloria added more quietly.

The sincerity in her tone caught him slightly off guard.

Gael glanced across the yard toward Haley, who was currently stealing chips while Luke complained dramatically beside her.

"She makes happy, too," he answered honestly.

Gloria's expression softened imdiately.

As they continued their conversation, that entire interaction did not escape Claire's attention from across the backyard.

Claire noticed dynamics automatically.

Who gravitated toward who.

Who relaxed around who.

And Gael had started becoming the center of attention in subtle ways without even trying.

"Okay!" Cam suddenly clapped loudly. "Group photo before Phil burns sothing."

"I heard that!" Phil yelled.

"You were ant to!"

The family gradually gathered together near the patio while Jay complained about organization, and Luke sprayed water at random civilians.

Haley imdiately moved beside Gael, slipping naturally against his side while Cam tried directing people like a wedding photographer.

"Closer," Cam demanded dramatically.

"We are already related," Mitchell replied.

"Emotionally closer."

Gael felt Haley's hand slide into his automatically while everyone argued around them.

Noise.

Movent.

Laughter.

And standing there in the middle of all of it, Gael suddenly realized sothing unsettling.

He no longer felt like an outsider visiting this world.

He felt like soone building a place inside it.
