Now reading: Chapter 18 18: Poolside from Modern Family: More than Family, a Mature novel by disarmednose.

The family photo took fourteen attempts.

Not because of technical problems.

Because nobody in this family could behave normally for more than six consecutive seconds.

Luke kept making faces.

Cam insisted on "emotional positioning."

Phil blinked in almost every shot.

And Jay looked progressively closer to giving up on humanity entirely.

"This," Jay muttered while adjusting his shirt again, "is why people drank in the fifties."

"You still drink now," Claire pointed out.

"That's because of all of you."

Gael stood off to the side near Haley while Cam continued rearranging people around the pool dramatically.

"Okay!" Caron Tucker announced while holding the cara. "Imdiate family first."

"That's literally already who's standing here," Mitchell replied.

"No, emotionally arranged family."

"That sentence made it worse."

Haley snorted beside Gael while Phil Dunphy waved enthusiastically toward him.

"You can jump in too!"

Before Gael could answer, Claire pointed toward the setup imdiately.

"Phil, he just t half these people today."

"Exactly," Jay added dryly. "Let's give him at least one afternoon before legally adopting him."

Haley laughed, bumping lightly against Gael's shoulder.

"See? You're making progress already."

Gael smiled faintly.

Honestly, standing off to the side felt more natural anyway.

He liked these people already—probably more than he should—but this was still their family photo.

He wasn't part of that yet.

Not really.

"Fine," Cam sighed dramatically. "Core family first. Then, bonus photos."

"That sohow sounded insulting," Gael said.

"It was affectionate."

The flash finally went off while Luke ruined at least two pictures intentionally.

Then the family imdiately dissolved back into smaller conversations again.

"Okay, now one with Haley and Gael," Phil announced proudly.

Haley grabbed Gael's wrist before he could protest.

"Co on."

"You say that like I have a choice."

"You really don't."

Cam proceeded to take far too many photos while giving increasingly emotional directions.

"Closer."

"Relax your shoulders."

"Think romantic thoughts."

"Oh my God, Haley, stop laughing for one second."

"We are literally standing normally," Haley argued.

"You're standing like coworkers!"

Gael laughed quietly while Haley rolled her eyes beside him.

Then, without thinking about it much, she slid one arm around his waist and leaned comfortably against him.

Small movent.

Natural already.

Cam gasped dramatically.

"There! Human connection!"

"Please never say that again," Mitchell muttered.

Across the patio, Claire watched the scene while talking quietly with Gloria.

Not because she was suspicious.

Mostly because Haley looked genuinely relaxed.

No exaggerated flirting.

No performance.

No trying too hard.

Just comfortable.

"You keep doing that," Gloria said suddenly.

Claire glanced sideways.

"Doing what?"

"Watching them."

Claire folded her arms lightly.

"I'm her mother."

"And?"

"And I observe."

Gloria smiled knowingly.

"Oh, relax. I only an she looks happy."

Claire's eyes drifted back toward Haley automatically.

Haley was laughing at sothing Gael said now, one hand still resting against his chest while Cam continued overdirecting photos nearby.

Easy chemistry.

That was the part Claire noticed most.

Everything between them looked easy.

Not forced.

Not dramatic.

And sohow, despite only eting most of the family today, Gael already moved through the backyard as if he belonged there more than Claire expected.

"You know what's strange?" Gloria asked softly.

Claire humd lightly.

"He listens."

Claire looked at her.

"What?"

"To everyone." Gloria nodded subtly toward Gael across the yard. "Most young n wait for their turn to talk. He actually listens."

Claire didn't answer imdiately.

Because she had noticed that too.

With Haley.

With Phil.

Even with Jay.

Gael paid attention when people spoke, as if he genuinely cared about the answer.

It was a surprisingly rare quality.

anwhile, near the pool, Manny Delgado had sohow trapped Gael into a conversation about literature while Haley stole chips from the snack table nearby.

"You've read Neruda?" Manny asked, sounding impressed.

Gael shrugged lightly.

"A little."

Manny looked deeply satisfied by that answer.

"I knew there was depth to you."

"That sounds threatening."

"It was admiration."

Haley returned beside Gael with a drink.

"Should I be worried you two are becoming best friends?"

"Yes," Manny answered imdiately.

The late afternoon sun reflected softly across the pool while the family drifted through overlapping conversations around them.

Phil argued with Mitchell about grilling techniques.

Luke chased Lily with a water gun again.

Cam attempted to organize the appetizers.

Chaos.

But warm chaos.

And sitting there beneath the California sunlight with Haley leaning comfortably against his shoulder—

Gael realized he was starting to look forward to this kind of noise.
