Three days later, Gael made the offer.
He did it quietly.
Just a phone call with his realtor in the middle of the afternoon while sitting in his apartnt office.
Simple numbers.
Inspection contingencies.
Closing tilines.
Still—
The second the call ended, the reality of it settled differently in his chest.
Because this wasn't:
staying over more often anymore.
This was planting roots.
Right next to the Dunphys.
His phone buzzed almost imdiately afterward.
Haley:
Mom says you've been suspiciously quiet all day.
Are you plotting cris?
Gael smiled despite himself before typing back:
Maybe.
Three dots appeared instantly.
Then:
WAIT.
DID YOU DO IT?
Interesting how quickly she knew.
He answered with a simple:
Offer's in.
The typing bubble disappeared.
Reappeared.
Disappeared again.
Then finally:
OH MY GOD.
Three seconds later his phone rang.
Gael answered already laughing.
"You're dramatic."
"You put in an offer?!"
"That's generally how buying houses works."
Haley made a sound halfway between excitent and emotional collapse.
"When were you going to tell ?!"
"You found out thirty seconds later."
"That's not the point."
He could practically hear her pacing through the phone.
Then:
"Oh my God. Wait until Luke hears."
"No, wait, don't tell Luke first."
"No, wait, tell everything first."
Gael leaned back in his chair smiling faintly while she spiraled enthusiastically through the other end of the call.
Honestly?
Her excitent made the decision feel strangely right.
Not because of the house.
Because of what it represented.
Routine.
Future.
Permanence.
And Haley clearly felt that too.
Then her voice softened slightly.
"You're really doing this."
The sentence landed quieter than the rest.
More real.
Gael looked out the office window for a second before answering.
"Looks like it."
A brief silence followed.
Just emotional enough that neither rushed through it.
Then Haley recovered first.
"Okay, important question."
"..."
"Can I decorate part of it?"
"There it is."
"I'm serious."
"That's what concerns ."
She laughed softly through the phone.
Then another voice appeared faintly in the background.
Haley imdiately groaned.
"Oh no."
"What?"
"Mom just realized why I scread."
Claire's voice drifted faintly through the phone:
"What do you an he made an offer?"
Then footsteps.
Then:
"Haley—"
Then the line abruptly shifted as Haley clearly moved rooms.
"She's following ," Haley whispered dramatically.
"That sounds healthy."
"She's pretending she doesn't care but she absolutely cares."
That sounded accurate.
Then Haley lowered her voice further.
"She's been weirdly thoughtful about the whole thing."
"How so?"
"She keeps asking practical questions."
"That sounds normal."
"No." Haley paused briefly. "Mom only gets practical when sothing actually matters to her."
The observation lingered longer than expected.
Before he could answer, Claire's voice sounded closer again through the phone.
"Haley!"
"I HAVE TO GO," Haley whispered loudly.
Then:
"I'm moving in imdiately."
The call disconnected before he could answer.
Gael stared at the phone for a second afterward.
Still smiling slightly.
Then another ssage appeared almost imdiately.
From Alex.
Haley just sprinted through the house screaming.
I assu you bought the neighborhood.
