The next morning, Manny, Gloria, and Jay ca to the family breakfast.
Phil was already in the backyard holding a asuring tape before Gael even arrived.
Claire looked one inconvenience away from homicide.
"It's eight-thirty," she said while walking onto the patio with coffee.
Phil pointed toward the fence proudly.
"Dreams don't sleep."
"Your dreams need zoning approval."
Luke appeared beside him, carrying graph paper.
"We made gate blueprints."
Claire stared at both of them in visible disbelief.
"You involved Luke?"
"He brings creative danger."
"That's not a positive trait."
anwhile, Haley practically vibrated with excitent the second Gael stepped through the back door.
"You own a house."
She grabbed his hand imdiately and started pulling him toward the patio.
"Dad's been acting like we joined a neighborhood alliance."
Phil looked deeply offended.
"Because we DID join a neighborhood alliance."
Jay snorted into his coffee from the outdoor table.
"This is why nobody lets you run things."
The energy around the family felt noticeably different now that the sale was official.
Lighter.
More invested.
Like everyone unconsciously understood that Gael wasn't temporary anymore.
Even Alex seed more thoughtful than sarcastic this morning.
She sat near the patio steps with her laptop open, occasionally glancing toward the neighboring property visible beyond the fence.
At one point she looked toward him.
"So when do you move in?"
"Couple weeks probably."
Haley groaned dramatically.
"That's too long."
"You survived this long already."
"Barely."
Claire rolled her eyes lightly while sitting beside Gloria.
"You say that like he's being deployed overseas."
"That's because you don't understand my suffering."
"I absolutely understand your suffering," Alex replied. "The entire house hears your suffering."
Haley nearly choked on her drink.
"Alex!"
Gael covered part of his face with one hand while Gloria laughed hard enough to lean against Claire's shoulder.
Even Claire lost composure for a second.
"Okay," Haley muttered. "That felt targeted."
"It was targeted," Alex answered calmly.
Alex sounded annoyed instead of sounding embarrassed.
Like sothing about the situation still lingered in her head after the rainy night conversation.
Before Gael could think too deeply about that, Phil marched toward him, holding the tape asure again.
"Can I supervise the movers?"
Claire answered instantly.
"No."
"But—"
"You'll reorganize his entire house."
"That sounds inevitable," Alex corrected.
The conversation dissolved into overlapping argunts again while Haley stayed tucked comfortably against Gael's side.
Then, through all the chaos, Claire looked toward the neighboring house once more.
Not thoughtfully this ti.
More like she was starting to ntally place him there already:
next door,
walking distance,
part of the rhythm of everyday life.
And judging from the softer expression she failed to hide afterward—
The idea no longer felt strange to her anymore.
