Now reading: Chapter 71 71: First Key from Modern Family: More than Family, a Mature novel by disarmednose.

Closing happened on a Tuesday afternoon.

No dramatic ceremony.

Just signatures, paperwork, and a realtor handing Gael a small set of keys across a polished office desk.

Simple mont.

Still strangely heavy.

Because now it was official.

The house next door was his.

His phone buzzed before he even reached the parking lot.

Haley:

[DID YOU GET THEM]

Gael smiled faintly while unlocking his car.

[The keys? Yes.]

Three dots appeared instantly.

Then:

[CO OPEN THE DOOR RIGHT NOW]

By the ti he pulled into the neighborhood twenty minutes later, Haley was already waiting outside the Dunphy house.

Barefoot.

Oversized hoodie.

Far too excited for a weekday afternoon.

She sprinted toward the driveway the second his car stopped.

"Show ."

"Perv."

"The keys, Gael."

He held them up once.

Haley gasped dramatically like he'd revealed state secrets.

"Oh my God."

Then she kissed him before he could say anything else.

Fast.

Happy.

Completely unfiltered.

The kind of kiss that ca from excitent more than romance.

Though there was plenty of that too.

"You own the house," she said again afterward like she still couldn't believe it.

Before he could answer, the front door behind them opened.

Phil stepped outside carrying a cordless drill.

Nobody questioned why.

"IS IT TI?"

Claire appeared imdiately behind him.

"Why are you holding tools already?"

"Preparation."

Luke nearly tripped over himself running outside next.

"WE HAVE KEYS?"

"We," Claire repeated slowly, "do not have keys."

Luke ignored her completely.

Five minutes later, the entire family sohow ended up standing inside the empty living room of the new house.

Again.

This ti legally.

Sunlight spilled through the tall windows while footsteps echoed softly across the hardwood floors.

Everything slled faintly new:

paint,

wood,

empty space.

Haley spun slowly in the middle of the room smiling to herself.

"This is insane."

Phil imdiately started discussing wall-mounted televisions.

Alex wandered quietly through the downstairs like she was recalibrating the reality of it now that furniture and staging were gone.

And Claire—

Claire stood near the kitchen island holding a cup of coffee while looking around more slowly than everyone else.

Not excitent exactly.

Adjustnt.

At one point Gael walked beside her while the others argued about couch placent across the room.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

Claire glanced toward him briefly.

"Yeah." Then she looked around the empty house again. "It just beca real very suddenly."

Fair.

Because once the keys existed, the emotional distance disappeared too.

No more hypothetical future.

No more "maybe."

Now he was:

next door,

permanent,

part of the neighborhood.

Part of their lives in a way that no longer had an exit attached to it.

Haley's laughter echoed from upstairs suddenly followed imdiately by Luke yelling:

"I FOUND THE BEST ROOM."

Phil sprinted toward the staircase instantly.

"NO CLAIMING TERRITORY YET."

Claire laughed softly under her breath before shaking her head.

Then, almost absentmindedly:

"You're going to be here all the ti now."

The sentence ca out quieter than the chaos around them.

Gael looked toward her.

"So are you."

That pulled another laugh out of her before she looked away again.

And sohow—

standing in the middle of the empty house with Claire smiling beside him while the rest of the family destroyed peace upstairs—

The place already felt less empty than it should have.
