"Okay, first of all," Claire said after recovering from the coffee incident, "that was an insane thing to say before noon."
Alex looked completely unbothered while setting her books on the kitchen island.
"It was just an observation."
"No," Haley replied imdiately. "It was psychological stress."
"Those are not mutually exclusive."
Gael hid a smile while Haley stole his coffee again out of emotional retaliation against reality itself.
The kitchen settled into overlapping conversation afterward, but the mood had shifted slightly.
Alex opened one of her SAT prep books while Claire moved toward the fridge.
"You have practice tests voluntarily spread across your sumr," Haley muttered in horror.
"Yes."
"That's terrifying."
"That's preparation."
"That's Stockholm syndro."
Watching the contrast between the sisters had beco more noticeable lately.
Haley moved through life instinctively:
social,
expressive,
emotion-first.
Alex moved through it strategically:
planned,
asured,
future-oriented.
And now both of them were standing inside the sa kitchen looking at completely different versions of adulthood.
Claire leaned against the counter with her coffee again.
"So where are we on college applications?"
Alex visibly brightened slightly at the topic.
"Good."
"That answer sounded suspiciously short."
"I already finished most of my essays."
Haley looked offended imdiately.
"Of course you did."
Alex ignored her and opened a folder filled with printed docunts.
Gael glanced down at the pages.
"You color-coded universities?"
"That's not unusual."
"That's deeply unusual."
Claire smiled despite herself.
"What's top choice right now?"
Alex hesitated briefly.
Then:
"Stanford probably."
Haley groaned dramatically.
"Oh my God, you're becoming a tech villain."
"That's Silicon Valley."
"Exactly."
But underneath the teasing, sothing quieter lingered.
Because suddenly:
applications,
universities,
future cities—
made Alex feel older.
Closer to leaving.
Claire seed to feel it too.
Her expression softened slightly while looking at the folders spread across the island.
"You'd really go that far?"
Alex noticed the shift imdiately.
"It's Stanford."
"That wasn't my question."
Small silence.
Then Alex looked down at the papers briefly.
"…Maybe."
There it was.
Not just ambition.
Fear too.
Because for all her confidence academically, actually leaving the family felt different when it stopped being hypothetical.
Haley noticed it too, though she reacted differently.
"Well," she muttered, "I'm staying in California forever."
"That sounds limiting," Alex replied.
"That sounds emotionally healthy."
"Debatable."
Claire laughed softly under her breath while Gael watched the exchange more carefully.
Because suddenly the sisters' futures felt sharply divided:
Alex preparing to leave,
Haley still trying to figure out where she belonged,
both quietly unsettled by the other's direction.
Then Haley looked toward Gael.
"What would you do?"
Claire glanced up too.
"What do you an?" he asked.
"If you got into sowhere huge." Haley shrugged lightly. "Like top-school huge."
Gael leaned back slightly against the counter.
"I'd go."
Alex looked at him imdiately.
Certain answer.
No hesitation.
Haley noticed that too.
"You wouldn't stay for people?"
The question ca out lighter than what sat underneath it.
Gael understood anyway.
"You can care about people and still move forward."
The sentence settled quietly through the kitchen.
Alex looked thoughtful afterward.
Claire too.
And Haley—
Haley stayed silent for the first ti all morning.
