The conversation stayed with Alex longer than she expected.

By evening, college lists still covered half her bedroom floor.

Stanford.

Berkeley.

Columbia.

Yale.

Acceptance rates circled in red ink.

Scholarship notes stacked beside debate awards.

Future compressed into paper piles and deadlines.

Usually that excited her.

Tonight it mostly made her restless.

A soft knock interrupted her halfway through an essay draft.

"Co in."

Gael stepped into the room holding two coffees.

Alex blinked once.

"You voluntarily entered the war zone."

"It's survivable."

"It's not."

Still, she took the coffee imdiately.

He just sat down at the desk chair beside the window while she stayed cross-legged on the bed surrounded by papers.

Comfortable silence.

Different from Haley.

With Haley, silence usually beca physical:

touching,

leaning,

kissing,

sex.

With Alex, silence beca ntal.

Calr.

Sharper.

"You color-coded deadlines by emotional damage level," he observed eventually.

"That's called organization."

"That's called fear."

Alex sighed dramatically and dropped backward onto the bed.

"I hate this process."

"That sounded personal."

"It is personal." She rubbed at her forehead. "Everybody keeps acting like getting into a top school magically fixes your life."

Gael looked toward the application papers scattered around her.

"And you don't believe that."

"I believe it changes your life." Alex stared up at the ceiling quietly. "I'm just not sure it makes people happy."

That sounded more honest than most things she said.

Because usually Alex approached the future like a competition she planned to win.

Tonight she sounded like soone realizing winning still ca with losing things too.

"You worried about leaving?" he asked.

Alex laughed softly once.

"That obvious?"

"A little."

She sat up again slowly, coffee warming between her hands now.

Then:

"I've spent my entire life trying to get out ahead." She looked down at the papers. "And suddenly everyone's acting emotional because I might actually do it."

The sentence landed heavier than she intended.

Because underneath the sarcasm and ambition, Alex clearly hadn't prepared for the emotional side of succeeding.

Gael leaned back in the chair slightly.

"You don't have to choose between ambition and family."

Alex narrowed her eyes.

"You've beco annoyingly stable for a twenty-year-old."

"That's judgntal."

"It's observational."

That pulled a small smile out of him.

Then Alex looked toward the hallway briefly before lowering her voice slightly.

"You know Haley's spiraling a little now, right?"

Interesting pivot.

"How so?"

"She heard 'I'd go' and imdiately started ntally planning abandonnt scenarios."

Honestly?

That sounded accurate.

Alex tucked one leg beneath herself against the bed.

"She acts relaxed about the future because she hasn't figured hers out yet." The honesty in her voice sharpened slightly. "And standing next to soone who already has…"

She didn't finish the sentence.

Didn't need to.

Gael understood anyway.

Because Haley loved intensely, but uncertainty still scared her more than she admitted.

Especially now that the relationship had started feeling serious.

Then Alex looked at him directly again.

"She really loves you."

Simple sentence.

But different from before.

Less teasing.

More protective.

Gael stayed quiet for a second.

Then:

"I know."

Alex studied his face briefly afterward like she was checking sothing internally.

Then she smiled faintly.

"Good."

And for the first ti in a while—

the silence afterward felt less like analysis between them…

and more like trust.
