By the ti they got back to the neighborhood, Haley's mood had changed completely.

Lighter.

More focused.

Not magically cured of uncertainty.

Just less trapped inside it.

She spent half the drive talking about:

branding internships,

fashion marketing programs,

influencer agencies,

and whether she could realistically build sothing around social dia aesthetics.

For the first ti in weeks, her future sounded exciting to her again instead of intimidating.

That mattered.

"You're smiling," she accused while they pulled into the driveway.

"I am happy."

"You do that tiny smug thing when you think you helped emotionally."

"That 's not true."

"It absolutely is."

Fair enough.

The gate between the yards stood open when they walked into the backyard carrying shopping bags and takeout.

Predictably.

At this point the thing barely qualified as a boundary anymore.

Claire sat at the Dunphy patio table working on her laptop while Phil attempted to untangle string lights beside her with the concentration of a man defusing explosives.

Alex looked up from her SAT prep book first.

"Oh good. The consurs returned."

Haley dropped shopping bags dramatically onto the table.

"I'm reinventing myself professionally."

"That sounds too unstable," Alex replied.

"It sounds ambitious."

Interesting difference.

Claire closed her laptop slightly.

"How was the market?"

Haley brightened imdiately.

"Actually really good."

The shift in energy was obvious enough that everyone noticed.

Even Phil paused mid-lightbulb struggle.

Haley launched into the story quickly:

the designer booth,

branding conversations,

fashion marketing ideas,

possible internships.

And the more she talked, the more animated she beca.

Not performative excitent.

Real investnt.

Claire watched her carefully over the top of her coffee mug.

Softening more with every sentence.

Because underneath all the chaos, this was what Claire had quietly worried about for years:

Haley drifting without direction.

And now suddenly she sounded motivated by sothing real.

"You'd actually be good at that," Claire admitted eventually.

Haley stopped mid-sentence.

"…Wait. Seriously?"

Claire looked mildly offended.

"You think I'd lie?"

"Yes," Alex answered instantly.

But Haley was still staring at her mother now.

Because approval from Claire hit differently than praise from almost anyone else.

Especially about sothing career-related.

Claire noticed the look and rolled her eyes lightly.

"You understand presentation and people naturally." She shrugged once. "That's valuable."

Haley's entire posture softened afterward.

Small thing.

Still important.

Then Phil looked toward Gael.

"You did this."

Alex smirked quietly into her drink while Claire hid a smile.

Watching Haley reconnect with ambition made the entire relationship dynamic feel healthier suddenly.

Less:

Haley orbiting Gael's life.

More:

Haley building one beside it.

Important distinction.

Then Gloria's voice drifted through the open gate.

"Well. Sobody looks happier today."

Everyone turned.

Gloria stepped into the backyard carrying wine and effortless confidence as usual while Jay followed behind her already looking tired of social interaction.

Haley imdiately pointed toward her mother.

"Mom finally admitted I'm good at sothing."

Gloria blinked once.

"She waited this long?"

"Hey," Claire protested.

Gloria ignored her and kissed Haley's cheek before sitting down.

"You would be amazing in fashion branding."

Haley looked dramatically vindicated.

"SEE?"

Claire sighed into her coffee.

"I'm surrounded by emotionally loud people."

Gael watched Gloria while the conversation shifted around the table again.

The interesting thing was—

Gloria's attention kept returning to him in small monts:

during pauses,

between conversations,

over the rim of her wine glass.

Not obvious enough for anyone else to consciously register.

But definitely intentional now.

And when their eyes t briefly across the patio—

she smiled first.
