The conversation should have ended there.

Honestly, it probably would have with almost anyone else.

But Gloria had a way of lingering inside monts without making them feel forced.

She took another slow sip of wine while music drifted softly across the backyard.

Then:

"You know what the funny part is?"

"Claire thinks she's the only woman who notices things."

Gael looked toward her more carefully now.

"She notices a lot."

"She notices everything." Gloria leaned lightly against the counter beside him. "But Claire analyzes life. I feel it first."

That sounded accurate.

Because Claire approached attraction like a problem to solve.

Gloria approached it like weather:

sothing to enjoy,

sothing to step into.

Then Gloria looked toward the quiet house behind them where Jay had already gone upstairs.

Her expression softened slightly.

"I do love my husband."

The honesty ca unexpectedly direct.

Gael stayed quiet.

Because the statent mattered.

Gloria noticed imdiately and smiled faintly.

"You thought I was going to say sothing terrible?"

"That sounds defensive."

"Just observant."

She rested one elbow against the counter more comfortably.

"Jay gave stability, family, security." Her voice turned quieter. "He made my life safe."

Then her eyes returned toward him.

"But safe and exciting are not always the sa thing."

Not manipulation.

Not confession.

Truth.

And sohow truth felt more dangerous coming from Gloria than flirting ever did.

The silence stretched softer afterward.

Then Gloria smiled suddenly, lighter again.

"Relax. I'm not seducing you beside a pool after cheesecake."

"That's oddly specific."

"It's classy."

Gael laughed quietly while she watched the reaction with visible satisfaction.

Gloria clearly enjoyed the tension now.

Not hiding it.

Not escalating recklessly.

Playing with it.

That was the dangerous part.

Then his phone buzzed softly against the counter.

Haley:

I think I drank too much. Pick up.

Gael burst out laughing imdiately.

"Oh my God."

He turned the phone toward her briefly.

"That woman becos funnier after whiskey."

Still smiling, Gloria stepped away from the counter, finally.

The movent broke the tension naturally.

But not completely.

Because now both of them had acknowledged it existed.

Huge difference.

She paused beside him before both heading toward the patio door.

Close enough for her perfu to linger faintly again.

"You know," she said softly, "this neighborhood was much less interesting before you moved here."

Then she smiled—

slow,

confident,

fully aware of the effect—

Then she helped Gael take Haley to his car before disappearing inside the house.
