Wallace Warner looked at the ceiling and sighed, probably knowing he didn’t have much ti left, and feared he wouldn’t get to see his grandchildren born.
"Shane, the thing I’ve always worried about the most is you. I’ve owed you so much, and never really took good care of you. I know you have so resentnt towards . I might not have the chance to make up for it."
Wallace Warner’s voice sounded much weaker than usual, but compared to a few days ago when he could hardly speak, it was not bad: "But now it’s fine, with Audrey by your side, I’m relieved. You’re soon to be a father, and I hope you’ll understand my intentions a bit more by then. But don’t be like , don’t love your child in the way you think is best, but rather consider what the child wants."
Helen Holloway listened with tears in her eyes: "Master, why talk about this now?"
Audrey Sutton quietly lifted her head to glance at Shane Warner, who just silently watched Wallace Warner.
Seeing the complexity in his eyes, there were surely many things he wanted to say, but at this mont, saying them might not have any aning.
"By the way, how’s the investigation into your brother’s matter going?"
Shane Warner replied in a low voice: "There are so new leads, but so fieldwork and verification are still needed."
Wallace Warner sighed: "Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Sotis finding out the truth may not give you peace of mind. Rather than painstakingly uncover a truth that might not lead to results, spend that ti with the people who love you."
Helen Holloway imdiately retorted: "If it can be investigated, it should be. I’m still waiting for Vincent Warner to return everything that doesn’t belong to him!"
Shane Warner: "I’ll do my best to find out."
He’s no longer investigating this matter with the hatred he once had, as he increasingly believes that Vincent Warner wasn’t the one who caused his brother’s death.
Now, he simply wants to understand the truth and find out who is the mastermind behind this conspiracy.
"By the way, has Heath Holloway contacted you, Shane? I heard he’s been back for two or three days, yet he hasn’t co to see us, and I can’t reach him by phone."
Shane Warner: "He studied here before; he has many fair-weather friends. I’ll wait for him to co to the office himself."
Helen Holloway: "I’m just worried that sothing might have happened to him."
Shane Warner: "My uncle called . Heath even asked him for money yesterday. Nothing will happen to him. It’s good enough if he doesn’t cause trouble."
Helen Holloway: "Your uncle just hopes you manage him well. He wasn’t serious about studying in school, and since graduating, he hasn’t done much. He’s afraid he’ll fall in with the wrong crowd."
Shane Warner murmured softly: "Can’t get any worse."
Helen Holloway advised earnestly: "You can’t talk like that. He’s still young and immature. He’s quite smart and articulate. Your uncle just hopes he’ll learn sothing from you. So put in a little effort to oversee him."
Shane Warner nodded: "Then I’ll take Audrey back first. She has a class later."
Audrey Sutton muttered softly: "It doesn’t matter whether I go or not."
But Audrey Sutton knew things were different now. With Shane Warner overseeing everything, she had to attend any class, no matter what it was.
Now that Barry Barrett and Flora Lane weren’t at school, it was fortunate that Seraphina Vaughn was idle. When Audrey Sutton invited her to attend class together, she agreed readily, probably also bored alone in the dormitory.
Few people were seriously listening to the class, and Audrey Sutton kept chatting with Seraphina Vaughn, talking about Clarissa Morgan: "That day, when I tested her by ntioning Nolan Hawke, she got extrely nervous and turned to leave. So I suspect it might indeed be her, but I don’t have any evidence in hand."
Seraphina Vaughn: "Ask your husband for help; he’s sure to have more ans than you."
Audrey Sutton sighed: "His father is sick, he’s in the late stage of liver cancer, and he’s been busy and in a bad mood lately. How dare I bother him with this stuff?"
Seraphina Vaughn: "That Morgan hasn’t caused you any trouble recently, has she?"
Audrey Sutton shook her head: "Not yet, but I guess she’s slightly intimidated, afraid I might actually have so evidence."
Seraphina Vaughn: "If Nolan Hawke was really killed by her, you should still be careful. Many serial killers are like that; to hide the truth, they repeatedly silence those who know it to protect themselves. I think Clarissa Morgan could be that kind of person. Avoid contact with her for now, and ask your second brother to help investigate and see if he can find any evidence to bring her to justice."
"Yes, I’ve talked to my second brother about it, but he’s busy investigating Mr. Warner’s cause of death and probably hasn’t gotten around to this yet."
"Anyway, be careful. You have two lives to take care of now, and trading your life for hers isn’t worth it."
Audrey Sutton nodded thoughtfully and said: "I know she and Quentin Sterling are divorced now, which I think might be a breakthrough."
The November wind picked up fallen leaves, dancing them to the ground.
Audrey Sutton spent the past few days at ho painting, too cold to go out.
Her belly had noticeably swelled, but luckily, winter clothes were thick enough to conceal her pregnancy.
"Ding dong—"
The doorbell rang downstairs, and Audrey Sutton put down her brush to go downstairs. Through the monitor screen by the door, she saw Phoebe King standing outside, and imdiately opened the door: "Sister Phoebe? What brings you here?"
Phoebe King shivered her way inside: "It’s freezing."
Audrey Sutton closed the door and found a pair of fluffy slippers from the shoe cabinet for her, "The heating isn’t on downstairs, let’s go to my room, I’ll get you a cup of hot water first to warm up."
Phoebe King glanced around: "Shane isn’t at ho, right?"
Audrey Sutton shook her head: "No, he’s at work. Why so secretive?"
Phoebe King accepted the cup of hot water Audrey offered as she followed her upstairs, saying, "Afraid he’ll nag , say I laze around bringing you down with ."
Audrey Sutton: "Weren’t you working at Six’s place?"
Phoebe King: "Well, I got pregnant and only worked for a month, then stopped. It’s cold, and I didn’t want to get up early. Besides, your brother is supporting anyway."
Audrey Sutton smiled: "So why did you co to see ?"
Phoebe King walked into the warmly heated bedroom, feeling instantly comfortable. She placed the water cup on the table and took off her down jacket, saying: "I’m bored. Your brother is off taking exams these days, and I’m stuck watching dramas at ho until my eyes hurt, so I thought of visiting you."
Audrey Sutton: "I haven’t gone out for a few days either, painting drafts has made my back and legs ache."
Phoebe King: "I told you, during these ten months you should just enjoy yourself. Why bother with drafts?"
Audrey Sutton: "I have nothing else to do, and besides, my sister-in-law has already reduced my update load by half. If I stop updating altogether, I’m afraid she’ll show up at my door with a knife."
