Violet

When we erged from the forest surrounding the estate, to the outskirts of the inner district, the first thing that snared my attention was the large object in front of us. It was enormous, almost as big as the small hut I used to live in. It was made of dark polished wood, with simple intricate carvings of wolves in the middle of a hunt covering its surface.

The wheels at the bottom made realise it was likely a transportation device different from the wagons I had seen around.

I had never seen anything like this in the inner district

And did it have to be this big?

"Give a few minutes," Ila murmured beside and approached the group of wolves beside the device. So of them were in their wolf form, and the others were engrossed in a deep conversation with Ila.

My gaze drifted to the flurry of activity from the area. More wolves were moving about, and a lot of them were carrying around supplies.

A deep growl made go still, and I slowly turned towards the direction of the sound.

I wasn’t sure why, but my legs also moved, and I inched closer along the side of the wooden device until I saw the large creature harnessed to the vehicle.

I froze, holding my breath.

The animal was almost as large as what it was attached to. Its body was covered in thick, dark, overlapping scales that lightly shimred under the sunlight. Much like a snake, but the scales were far larger.

It had four powerful legs ending in clawed feet that dug into the earth with each shift of weight. And its head was long and reptilian, with a crest of small horns running from its scaly brows to the back of its skull. Vertical slits made up its eyes, which blinked slowly as it waited with surprising patience.

A long, thick tail swayed behind it, and I slowly started to retreat my steps, not wanting to attract its attention.

I knew different regions would have creatures I had never seen before, but this one was unsettling.

And it looked dangerous.

Very dangerous.

I drew closer to the group Ila conversed with, my heart raging in my chest while I tried to stifle my shock.

What was that?!

I scanned the group Ila talked to, trying to take my mind off the hideous creature I had just seen when my eyes caught on one figure standing slightly apart from the others.

He looked young, probably close to my age, and had sharp green eyes that were currently fixed directly on . His face was hard, angular, and he looked like he would have been handso if not for the ugly red scar that ran along his jaw. A vicious, jagged line that looked like it had been ripped open rather than cut.

My pulse slowed and a heavy feeling settled in my stomach from his stare.

He did not hide his cold, open hostility.

I quickly looked away, my heart rate dropping even more.

A cold sweat washed over .

No one had ever looked at with such hatred in a long ti.

It was completely different from the disdain I was used to.

The sa hostile gaze burned into even though I was no longer looking at him. My shoulders tensed involuntarily and the bag I was carrying suddenly felt heavy.

’Don’t look. Don’t acknowledge it.’

But my traitorous eyes flicked back to him anyway.

He was still staring, his jaw, scarred and twisted, clenched tight. The hatred in his expression was so raw it made my stomach turn.

I lightly frowned, confused. For so strange reason, I had the feeling the hatred had nothing to do with being an Oga.

What had I even done to earn that look? I had never even seen him before.

I forced myself to turn away completely, my fingers tightening their hold on the straps of my bag.

"Violet?"

My neck nearly snapped as I jerked my head to find Ila standing close to the vehicle.

She paused at my reaction and the pleasantness on her face was replaced with a blank look. She wordlessly looked back at the group.

He was no longer looking at .

Ila sighed and a small apologetic smile returned to her lips. She gestured towards the device. "We should get going."

I imdiately nodded, grateful for the excuse to move.

She pulled open the door at the side and first took the bag from , jumping into the device with it and placing it sowhere before coming back to the entrance to help climb in.

I stared for a mont. The interior had cushioned benched seats facing each other and a small window on the other side of the wall.

I climbed in carefully, and settled onto one of the benches. Ila followed behind , closing the door before also sitting down.

A mont later, the vehicle lurched gently into motion.

"Are you comfortable?" Ila asked, arranging the skirt of her dress around her.

I stared blankly at her for a mont, the heavy feeling still lingering in my stomach as I thought back to that horrible look.

Should I bring that up with her?

She seed to have noticed.

"Yes," I cleared my throat and answered.

I could bring up the man later, I didn’t want to spend another second thinking about that look.

I looked around the interior. The cushioned bench was soft, and the walls and roof seed to have so sort of leather padding. It looked luxurious.

"This is a carriage."

I turned to Ila to find her staring at . She didn’t smile, but her eyes were gentle.

She continued, "They are a common mode of transportation in the outer district of the capital, and other larger territories."

"It’s beautiful," I murmured, glancing down at the seating.

I frowned.

’Would it truly be wise not to ntion him?’

"Please, don’t bother yourself about Corin’s behaviour. I will deal with him when we arrive at our destination."

I snapped my head up, my eyes widening.
