The eyes of the female corpse were undeniably black…
“Another human…” Ling Mo stepped around the severed head, moving slowly toward the female corpse. Along the way, his gaze swept across the ground until he quickly spotted the parasite, which was attempting to crawl deeper into the shadows.
“Still inside, huh…” Ling Mo quickly took two steps forward, carefully grabbing the parasite and pinching it tightly in his hand. He couldn’t yet be sure whether this parasite was still connected to that Progenitor Zombie, but given his previous success with using psychic interference, Ling Mo figured it was better to take this monster with him for now.
Better safe than sorry…
The parasite squird incessantly in his palm, but Ling Mo’s gaze had already turned back to the female corpse in front of him.
A strange odor emanated from the corpse, and sothing about her condition puzzled Ling Mo. Judging solely by the decayed state of her clothing, it was evident that she had died a long ti ago. However, her body still retained much of its elasticity and moisture, making her appear more like a dehydrated living person than a typical corpse. Her face, though sowhat attractive, was frozen in a stark expression of terror and despair that remained vivid to this day. Moreover, her exposed skin seed to be coated in so sort of substance…
“What is this…” Ling Mo frowned, reaching out to touch it before rubbing his fingers together. “Feels like… dried mucus? Almost like plastic wrap…” He observed it closely, mulling over the situation. “No other anomalies… So it must be this layer of mucus that preserved her body until now.”
With that thought, Ling Mo reached over and brushed aside the female corpse’s hair to reveal her tattered jacket underneath.
“No wounds… so it’s not a gestation pod. If that’s the case, why preserve her? Senior Zombies wouldn’t consu food that’s this far past its pri… Uh, sorry about that…” Though he thought the words in his mind, Ling Mo’s actions hardly conveyed any real apology. He pinched the edge of the jacket and gave it a tug, slowly pulling out a blue strap that had been hidden within.
“Snap.” A work ID card erged, suspended in front of Ling Mo’s eyes.
“Wang iyi… Looks pretty similar to the photo…” Ling Mo raised his head to make a comparison.
The hanging female corpse, juxtaposed against the sweet, carefully made-up smile of the woman in the photo…
“Alright, there is a bit of a difference,” Ling Mo turned over his work badge, then scraped off a few drops of blood on it with his fingernail, and sniffed it just below his nose, “This blood has been here for quite so ti…”
He looked back at the female corpse again, then shrugged his nose. A few seconds later, his eyes expressed a very strange look… Seeing such an expression on the face of a Zombie Puppet, one could imagine Ling Mo’s feelings at that mont…
“Ah…” He suddenly sighed, thinking to himself, “Just as I expected…”
The blood on the work badge was not from this woman. Moreover, the ti it was left was clearly earlier than the woman’s ti of death… Such details are not too difficult for a Zombie’s olfactory system to recognize, and the accuracy is relatively high. The only flaw is that it cannot determine the exact ti, as for Zombies, this kind of differentiation is more like an instinctive reaction to determine if food is fresh, rather than any sort of detection instrunt.
However, with this work badge, it could be deduced that she probably died about a year ago… This forr Rosen Company employee was obviously one of the Survivors who lived through the initial catastrophe. Since she was not eaten, it suggests that she might have been one of them… After the events described in the blood writings, other horrific incidents must have occurred within this group of Survivors.
“These incidents, can they be found in the mory of the Progenitor Zombie? If only we could understand the ins and outs of these events, maybe we could find what triggered her to retain her mories and emotions… But what could that be?”
During the rest of the journey, Ling Mo kept finding corpses in the sa condition as the female corpse. When he finally walked out of this area of corpses, the bodies of Survivors like this had reached a total of seven. These corpses varied in age and position, but they shared one thing in common. That was the deep despair and intense agony etched on their faces…
“Hmm?”
After a sudden clearing, what Ling Mo saw was a door sared with blood.
He stood outside the door listening for a while, then cautiously pushed open the door.
The heavy wooden door slowly split in the middle, revealing an increasingly wide gap. Behind the gap, however, was a faint stream of light…
Seeing such a scene suddenly in the perpetual darkness, there was not the slightest bit of excitent. On the contrary, Ling Mo felt a vague sense of eeriness. He cautiously peeked inside from the edge of the door before slowly entering.
Compared to the Progenitor Zombie, the evolutionary level of his Zombie Puppet was far too low. Whether by sll or Sensing, he could never detect the presence of a Progenitor Zombie in advance. Nonetheless, being cautious was still beneficial…
Of course, if the Progenitor Zombie had already recovered from the state of psychic interference, then the mont he stepped onto this floor, the opponent must have already noticed him…
There was still a trace of adventurous spirit in Ling Mo, especially since it wasn’t his main body in action, which allowed him to be more unrestrained in his movents. Regardless of whether the opponent was prepared or not, he had no intention of giving up halfway. Along the way, he wasn’t just following behind the parasite; a low probability of success didn’t an there was no chance at all…
“I really want to see what exactly you are…”
He slowly closed the door behind him but left a small crack open. This way, if an enemy approached from behind, he could be alerted in advance… Although most enemies had already been diverted by Li Yalin and his other Zombie Puppet, this place was still the domain of the Progenitor Zombie, where the danger was even greater than below.
“It’s so quiet…”
And spacious. The room was large and luxurious. However, the luxury decor had been transford into a somber and blood-curdling sight after being sared with copious amounts of blood and rotting flesh. The light seeped in from behind the curtains, which, like elsewhere, were stained with blood.
“Sothing’s not right…” Ling Mo stared at the curtains for a few extra monts, frowning.
A few seconds later, he nodded in realization.
No wonder it felt strange… The bloodstains here weren’t solely from killings; they were more deliberately placed… almost like a decoration…
As he passed a splendid liquor cabinet, Ling Mo paused. He looked inside through the glass and then wiped the dust off it.
“I feel like there’s sothing inside… Tch, there really is.”
A pair of dull and lifeless eyes stared back at him from inside, beneath which lay nurous corpses. The cabinet was packed full, effectively turning it into a storage for bodies.
Next, he discovered another hanging corpse on a coat rack that swayed slightly, and even the screen was splattered with blood, with many deliberate handprints left behind…
Every step Ling Mo took here unveiled a similar horrifying scene. However, beneath the surface-level terror, Ling Mo felt a strange, unexpected sensation creeping in. For Zombies, this kind of environnt probably ant nothing-but what about for humans? When the Progenitor Zombie ticulously decorated this place in such a way, what in the world had it been thinking?
“Huh?”
Rounding the folding screen, Ling Mo ca upon a bizarrely unsettling living room.
If he hadn’t Sensed in advance and confird that there was no sign of life in the area, he might have actually misunderstood and drawn so nightmarish conclusions.
From his vantage point, a line of figures could be seen neatly seated on the living room sofa. They all sat stiffly, staring blankly ahead without the tiniest bit of movent. At first glance, their grood hairstyles and tidy clothing were in stark contrast to the disheveled corpses outside the room. It was easy to mistake them for living humans at first glance.
But when one noticed the absolute, deathly silence hanging in the air, paired with the suffocating, blood-soaked scent that filled the space, the truth beca apparent-
They were corpses, carefully arranged to create this disturbing tableau.
Ling Mo slowly walked past them from the side, allowing their grotesque appearances to co fully into view, one by one.
Four n and two won… each corpse bore their own degrees of damage and missing body parts. Judging by their professional attire, they were clearly employees of Rosen Company. Like the other suspended corpses Ling Mo had encountered earlier, each of these six faces was etched with expressions of profound terror. The key difference, however, was their mouths: soone had forcibly stretched their jaws wide open, leaving them in permanent, gaping grimaces.
And in front of them, there was another body laid out…
It was the corpse of a woman. Her hands and feet had been tightly bound, and her abdon bore a deep, grueso incision. The most unsettling detail, however, was her blood-red eyes-glowing eerily even in death. Her mouth was similarly locked open, and beneath her crimson eyes, two streaks of vivid, blood-red tears had been painted, as though she had been crying in agony before eting her end.
“Do you understand it?”
A woman’s voice suddenly spoke from behind.
Ling Mo’s heart clenched as he whipped around instinctively, scanning the area.
No one was there.
His scalp prickled as a wave of unease surged through his body. He quickly swung his head back toward the living room.
This ti, there was a figure standing next to the female corpse on the floor.
She was dressed in a white gown, her hair falling loosely down in front of her. Her head was tilted slightly downward, her face turned in profile as she gazed at the corpse below.
“This… is ,” the woman in white said softly.
Ling Mo remained silent but tightened his grip on the parasite in his hand. His blood ran faster through his veins as tension coiled in every muscle of his body.
This woman… she was dangerous.
