“This is ” … These were the second words spoken by the woman in white after her appearance. From her lowered stance and her gesture as though trying to reach out and touch the female corpse, it wasn’t hard to deduce the aning behind her words – in this ticulously crafted scene, the role played by this corpse was to reenact a part of her past.

But… what exactly did this scene signify?

Ling Mo quickly steadied his breathing, forcing himself to calm down. He glanced out of the corner of his eye at the corpses, then at the woman in white, and slowly asked, “You are the so-called ‘Sister,’ the Progenitor Zombie, right?”

The woman in white, however, seed uninterested in answering his question. She remained in her posture, seemingly muttering to herself, “Aren’t you curious? You know, there’s actually a lot of similarity between humans and zombies. Take, for example… curiosity. Humans are curious creatures, and so are zombies. In fact, zombies often take it to the next level. Humans have concerns-they weigh risks and consider consequences. But zombies? They don’t complicate things like that. Then again, isn’t it natural? After all, weren’t zombies originally humans? The resemblance is to be expected…”

“…” Ling Mo remained silent as well, though his emotions were far from as calm as his appearance suggested.

“Hey, hey, did you pop out just to chit-chat with ? Or have you been keeping your personal drama to yourself for so long that you can’t wait to play narrator? I an, even though your outfit and voice seem pretty normal… this scene is anything but, okay?”

While internally grumbling, Ling Mo subtly glanced toward the side window. With the curtains drawn, he couldn’t see outside. Between the woman in white and the window, however, stood a cabinet. “Just a cabinet. As long as I stay here, she won’t leave the room. So, I’ll find an opportunity eventually. But… Ye Lian fired her gun earlier, didn’t she? Those eyes we saw from Ye Lian’s perspective-were they hers?”

He turned back to observe the female zombie again, but her hair was simply too long, almost entirely covering the side of her face. All Ling Mo could see were a pair of pale hands. anwhile, his zombie instincts were warning him not to act recklessly. Never mind how somber and lancholic she appeared now – as a Progenitor Zombie, she could transform into a bloodthirsty monster at a mont’s notice.

Until he found an opening, Ling Mo didn’t want to provoke her unnecessarily. If she wanted to talk, so be it. Any extra ti he could buy would be to his advantage…

“You’re curious too, aren’t you?” The woman in white spoke to herself again, then suddenly let out a strange, eerie laugh. The sound of it was so unsettling that Ling Mo’s hair nearly stood on end. That laugh… no normal person could make that kind of sound! His guard went up even higher. But the woman in white quickly stopped laughing and continued speaking.

“I don’t know why, but even though I’ve forgotten so many things, I sohow always rember these… And to ensure I wouldn’t forget, I kept them. At first, it was just because I didn’t want them to rot away and turn into bare bones, leaving all alone. But without realizing it, I gained a stronger… ability. I started attracting more of my kind to this place, and gradually, this place beca more lively. But no matter what I did, I couldn’t make them truly understand . No matter how much I cultivated them, no matter how I tried to make them evolve…”

At this point, she chuckled twice. “Still, at the very least, I made them more like … just like it used to be. When there’s soone like you, doing the sa things as you, it feels different sohow…”

“She’s definitely implying sothing…” Ling Mo thought to himself.

But what shocked him most in her monologue was the phrase “always rember.” The “always” she ntioned-could it really date back to when she first mutated? Additionally, she had unintentionally revealed information about the situation in this warehouse and the process of her own evolution. First, to preserve skeletons, then to find companions, and finally to make others understand her so she wouldn’t be alone anymore… At first listen, it might even tug at one’s heartstrings: unexpectedly, it all sounded rather moving. She was, in the end, just a lonely zombie…

“…This is just about finding accomplices, isn’t it?! Doing the sa things as before-you’re clearly referring to the activities happening in this warehouse!” Ling Mo thought in disgust, but on the surface, he spoke cautiously, “I don’t quite understand. Could you explain a bit more clearly?”

He chose his words carefully for a reason. The thoughts of a Zombie are inherently straightforward and simple, which also ant she could turn on him at any mont… After all, her ultimate goal was to devour Ling Mo; chatting was rely a pre-al entertainnt. Therefore, any questions posed too abruptly could end the entertainnt prematurely and hasten the alti. Letting her ramble on, however, left him utterly confused!

The best strategy, then, was to lure her in… showing interest without putting too much pressure…

The woman in white stopped her narration abruptly, falling silent for a mont before she resud speaking under Ling Mo’s anxious gaze: “Let’s start from here then…”

“Ah, that does the trick, a thod that applies to all situations…” At this mont, what Ling Mo thought of was naturally the experience he had summarized while dealing with the three female Zombies at ho…

In the quiet room, the woman in white, a Zombie herself, stood sideways, gently caressing the face of a female corpse and slowly recounted an incident that happened about a year ago. It was this very incident that led to her transformation and the establishnt of the Rosen Company standing here today-

“Ah! Please, let go! I’m not infected, I really am not!”

“I’m not either… please, we’re colleagues, aren’t we!”

In the dimly lit warehouse, two employees were crying and struggling violently.

anwhile, around them, six or seven other employees firmly pinned them to the ground and began tying them up with ropes from the warehouse.

The others remained seated quietly in the corner, silently watching the scene unfold…

“Help , save !”

As one of the employees was dragged towards the stairs, he desperately reached out to grab the iron railing on the staircase, screaming wildly at two won not far away. The two won, clinging tightly together, averted their gaze from the employee, shaking in terror.

“I’m not infected! I just have a fever, I’m just sick! Why don’t you believe , please believe ! I’m not one of those Monsters outside, really not… Ah! Don’t… Ah! You’ll get what’s coming to you! And you… why do you not help when you see death!”

In the midst of his frantic yelling, the employee suddenly let out a scream as two n kicked him hard, then dragged him up again…

One of them suddenly turned his head and shouted at those who averted their eyes: “What are you doing? Co up and help!”

“That’s right! Everyone agreed to this before, so why are you hesitating now? You heard what he said-whether you act or not, it won’t change anything!” another man shouted in frustration.

The warehouse fell silent again. Apart from the cries of the two employees who had been labeled as infected persons, no one made a sound.

The first man to speak kicked the railing with a loud clang, the abrupt noise startling most of the onlookers. The two won clinging to each other flinched and began sobbing uncontrollably.

“If we’re going to do this, we all have to do it together! Otherwise, when the rescue team arrives, who knows if you’ll all pin this on us? Don’t give that ‘we’ll all keep it a secret’ nonsense-I don’t believe you! These two are clearly on the verge of turning. Do you want to die? Or is the safety of all of us less important than these two lives?” His voice grew louder with every word, echoing in the oppressive quiet of the warehouse.

“Han Tao, you bastard! You’ll die a horrible death… ah!” One of the restrained employees cursed through their tears, but before they could finish, they were t with another violent stomp to the ground.

“If we don’t act now, when they mutate, none of us will leave this place alive!” Han Tao added darkly, his voice ice-cold with resolve.

The n standing idle hesitated, exchanging uneasy glances, but one by one, they gritted their teeth and stood up. At the sa ti, the employee who had been clutching the iron railing was yanked away, falling hard onto the floor beneath the staircase. anwhile, the other tied-up employee, already bound to the staircase railing, broke down in gut-wrenching sobs.

Screaming… crying… The sounds reverberated in the warehouse like an unbearable weight, collapsing the fragile tension that had bound everyone’s nerves. It was as if a dam had finally burst-soone let out a shout and charged forward. Chaos erupted as blood spattered from the staircase, painting the surrounding area deep red. The faces of the two sobbing won were soon speckled with crimson drops as their terrified expressions hardened further. The faces of everyone involved mirrored one another in a grotesque harmony: madness underpinned by unrelenting fear.

“I was one of those two won,” the woman in white said, her voice cold and distant. “Looking back now, I can’t quite understand the logic behind the choices those humans made. But I still rember how I felt in that mont-I was so scared, uncertain if we were doing the right thing, questioning whether or not that man was actually infected. But that doubt didn’t last long. I kept telling myself that he must’ve been infected, that it was the right decision to sacrifice him for the greater good. I think everyone else must’ve thought the sa way… Just like we all clung to the belief that rescue was coming. Because if humans lose their hope, they wouldn’t even know how to face tomorrow. When you think about it, humans really are complicated creatures…” She paused briefly before continuing.

Ling Mo felt a weight settle over him. For zombies, competition among their own kind was simply another path for evolution. But hearing a zombie so calmly recount a tragic event that had once happened to a group of humans still left him with a faint sense of sorrow and helplessness. However, by this point, Ling Mo had co to understand the true aning behind the phrase “doing it together.” And the fact that the woman in white still rembered this event so clearly-rembered it to the extent that it seed to influence her behavior even now-was probably because this mory had carved itself deeply into her mind.

“But this… this was only the beginning.”
