Now reading: Chapter 4: Grim Reaper from My SSS-Rank Grim Reaper System, a Fantasy novel by Exxs.

Grim turned his skull—now the size of an adult human’s head, made of bone black as night—toward the three bullies.

When he spoke, his voice ca from no mouth. It resonated from the air itself, from the ground, from the bones in their own bodies.

"You threatened. My master."

Jake ran first. A scream, a turn, a sprint—

Grim vanished.

He did not move fast. He faded into shadows and reappeared directly in front of Jake, scythe already halfway through its arc.

The blade passed through Jake’s battle wolf as if the creature were smoke. The beast howled—a sound that cut off abruptly as it simply ceased to exist, dissolving into gray ash in midair.

"My... MY COMPANION!" Jake collapsed to his knees, clutching his chest. The broken bond was like losing a piece of his soul.

Grim’s scythe returned. This ti, toward Jake.

"WAIT! PLEASE! I DIDN’T AN—!"

The blade pierced him.

There was no blood. Instead, sothing else ca out of Jake. Sothing translucent and shining, roughly human in shape but made of pure silver light.

His soul.

Grim grabbed it with his skeletal hand, squeezed—and the light went out like a candle being snuffed.

Jake crumpled. His eyes open, empty, the body still technically alive but completely hollow. A shell with nothing inside.

[DING!]

[Soul collected: 1/1000]

Brett and Dylan stood frozen in absolute horror.

"Please," Brett sobbed, tears running down his face. "I... I have a family... a sister..."

Grim tilted his skull. The red lights in his sockets pulsed.

"You had. Ti to think. About victims. When you attacked. The helpless."

"NO! WAITghhk—!"

The scythe moved two more tis.

Two companions dissolved into ash.

Two souls were harvested.

Two bodies fell, empty.

[Souls collected: 3/1000]

Silence fell over the alley like a shroud.

Grim stood among the three bodies—not dead, not truly, but not alive either. Shells. Warnings.

Then he turned toward where Alex lay, still bleeding out, still dying.

The skeleton—no longer so small, no longer so harmless—walked toward his master. Each step echoed like a death bell.

He knelt. Placed a skeletal hand over Alex’s bite wound.

[Life Drain – REVERSE]

Pale green energy flowed from Grim into Alex. The venom in his veins was neutralized, burned away by sothing that made the toxin seem harmless in comparison. The wound began to close, flesh rebuilding.

Alex gasped, his eyes snapping open, his lungs filling with painful air.

He looked up.

At Grim.

At his companion, now a tower of black bone and ancient power, scythe dripping with sothing that was not blood but the very essence of death.

"W-what...?" Alex’s voice ca out broken. "What are you?"

Grim tilted his skull. The red lights dimd slightly, almost as if the skeleton were... ashad? Concerned?

"I am... a fragnt. Of what I once was. The Reaper. The one who walks. Between life. And death."

The voice in Alex’s mind was no longer desperate. Still ancient, still resonant with eons, but now tinged with sothing else.

Loyalty. Purpose.

"You summoned . You bound . You are. My master. And I will protect. What is mine."

Alex looked past Grim at the three bodies. Empty shells with dead eyes.

"Did you... kill them?"

"No. Death. Would be rcy. I took. Their souls. They will live. But never. Feel. Anything. Again."

Horror and fascination fought for dominance in Alex’s chest. He should be terrified. He should be running, screaming, rejecting all of this.

But instead...

Instead, he looked at the system panel still floating in his vision:

[PATH OF THE DEATH SOVEREIGN – Activated]

[First evolution: 3/1000 souls collected]

[Warning: This path is forbidden by the Ancient Gods]

[Warning: Continuing will result in unknown consequences]

[Proceed?]

Alex looked at Grim. At his companion. His protector.

His power.

For three weeks he had been nothing. Less than nothing. A failure so complete that not even the dead would judge him.

But now...

Now he had this.

Slowly, with trembling fingers, Alex reached toward the system panel.

And pressed [YES].

The red lights in Grim’s skull blazed with what could only be described as fierce joy.

"Then we begin. Your rise. Your reign. Your. Sovereignty. Over death itself."

The system panel exploded into new notifications:

[System fully unlocked]

[New skill learned: SOUL SIGHT – See the life force of living beings]

[New skill learned: REANIMATE – Raise corpses as temporary servants]

[New skill learned: DEATH’S WHISPER – Communicate with the recently deceased]

[Quest unlocked: FIRST EVOLUTION]

Objective: Collect 1000 souls to evolve Grim to the next level

Current progress: 3/1000

Reward: Awakening Form 2/7, New abilities, Rank increase

Alex read everything, his mind racing.

A thousand souls.

To make Grim stronger.

To make himself...

What? Powerful? Dangerous?

Sothing that mattered?

He stood, swaying slightly. Grim rose with him, a dark guardian.

"The Ancient Gods," Alex said aloud. "The system said this is forbidden by the Ancient Gods."

"Yes. They sealed . Fragnted my being. Into seven pieces. Scattered across. Realities. Because of my. Power."

"What power?"

The red lights burned brighter.

"The power. Over the end. Of all things. Master. If you restore . Completely. If you gather. The seven. Fragnts. You will beco. Sothing. Even the gods. Cannot ignore."

It was madness. All of it was madness.

But Alex looked around the alley. At the shell-bodies. At the blood on the pavent.

At the proof that for the first ti in his life, he was not helpless.

"How do I collect souls without becoming a murderer?" he asked, because even now, so fragnt of his morality clung on.

"Dungeons. Beasts. Monsters. Have souls. Weak. But nurous. Kill enough. And I grow. You grow. Together. We ascend."

Dungeons.

Alex almost laughed. Of course. The sa dungeons the academy used to train elite summoners. The sa ones he had never been allowed to enter because his "companion" was too weak.

Except his companion had never been weak.

He had only been waiting.

"Alright," Alex said, surprising himself with the steadiness of his voice. "Alright. If this is what I have—if this is the path the universe gave —then I’ll take it."

He looked at Grim, at those burning red eyes.

"But we have rules. We don’t kill innocents. We don’t beco monsters. We hunt in dungeons, we grow stronger, and maybe—just maybe—we prove the world wrong about us."

Grim tilted his skull in what might have been a nod.

"As you wish. Master. Your will. Is mine. Always."

Alex looked one last ti at the three bodies. Tomorrow, soone would find them. There would be an investigation. But in the Lower City, with victims like these—rich students wandering where they shouldn’t—people would likely dismiss it as a robbery gone wrong.

No one would suspect Alex Carter.

No one ever suspected the invisible.

"Let’s go," he finally said. "We need to find out where the nearest dungeon is. And I need to learn how to use these new abilities before I get us both killed."

"I. Will teach. Master. I. Will show you. The secrets. That even death. Has forgotten."

As they walked out of the alley—Alex, the expelled failure, and Grim, the fragnt of sothing ancient and terrible—neither noticed the hooded figure watching from a distant rooftop.

The figure watched for a long mont, then pulled out a communication device.

"It’s him," they whispered. "The Reaper’s Fragnt has awakened. After a thousand years... it has finally found a master."

A voice crackled back: "Are you certain? Is it truly one of the Seven?"

"Completely certain. I saw the scythe. I saw the souls being harvested. The seal is broken."

A long silence. Then:

"Inform the Elders imdiately. If this is true... the Gods will awaken. And when they do..."

The voice faded, leaving the implication hanging in the cold night air.

The hooded figure watched Alex and Grim disappear into the darkness.

"May the gods have rcy on us," they murmured. "Because he certainly will not."
