Chapter 93 - Not Quite Lovers

Chen Ran stood in place, his head feeling a bit dizzy.

Only after watching helplessly as Zhang Fanzhi's car disappeared around the corner did he snap back to reality.

He took two deep breaths to make himself less agitated.

"What does she... what does she an by this?" Chen Ran tried hard not to let his imagination run wild.

Zhang Fanzhi hadn't said anything else, just that he could tell his parents, and even her expression hadn't changed much.

But how could Chen Ran stop himself?

He thought about it the whole way, his heart beating fast.

By the ti he snapped back to reality, he realized he had already reached his door.

After opening the door, he lay on his bed. His mind was constantly replaying what Zhang Fanzhi had just said.

He realized that, without knowing exactly since when, he had lost his normal state of mind when facing Zhang Fanzhi.

After letting his thoughts run wild for a long ti, Chen Ran glanced at his phone and realized a lot of ti had already passed.

He tapped on Zhang Fanzhi's profile picture and sent a WeChat ssage over.

"Are you ho yet?"

After a long while, Zhang Fanzhi finally replied.

"Just arrived."

Chen Ran hesitated for a long ti before asking, "Can I call you?"

Zhang Fanzhi replied very quickly, "No."

After a short pause, another ssage ca: "Ruyi is here with ."

Chen Ran breathed a sigh of relief and replied, "You have a flight to catch tomorrow morning, rest early."

"Mhm."

Chen Ran put down his phone, wondering what he would have said if Zhang Fanzhi had told him he could call, and he had actually dialed.

Ask her what her words just now ant?

And what if she said she just didn't want him to be put in a difficult position?

But since she got angry last night over that song, it shouldn't be that she didn't an it that way.

But what if she really didn't an it that way?

Chen Ran was truly conflicted.

This was the most conflicted he had been in both of his lifetis.

His heart was beating very fast, yet it felt like it was suspended in mid-air—unable to go up or down, filled with nervous apprehension.

On the other side.

Zhang Fanzhi sat alone on her bed, clutching her phone. Her hands were trembling slightly, and only when she saw Chen Ran send his goodnight ssage did she relax significantly.

Knock, knock, knock.

"Sis, why did you lock the door?" Zhang Ruyi shouted from outside.

"What is it?" Zhang Fanzhi's eyes flickered with slight panic.

"I want to sleep with you," Zhang Ruyi said.

"You have your own bed!"

"My bed is cold, and after I go to Huahai tomorrow, I won't be able to see you for a long ti again."

Zhang Fanzhi hesitated slightly and said, "Wait."

She touched her fair face, which was burning slightly hot, and took several deep breaths in a row before her emotions cald down.

After walking over and opening the door, Zhang Ruyi looked at her suspiciously:

"Sleeping in your own ho, why are you closing your door?"

Zhang Fanzhi ignored her and crawled into the covers on her own.

Zhang Ruyi said, "You weren't on the phone with Chen Ran just now, were you? Is there a need to close the door for that? It's not like anyone is going to eavesdrop on you guys!"

Zhang Fanzhi kept a straight face and said, "Are you going to sleep or not?"

"I'm sleeping, I'm sleeping!"

Knowing her sister was about to lash out, Zhang Ruyi hurriedly hopped onto the bed like a rabbit, lifted the covers, and burrowed inside.

The two sisters only left their heads poking out outside the blanket.

Zhang Ruyi hesitated for a mont and asked, "Sis, I believe you and Chen Ran are for real now. But with your status, is it really okay for you to date?"

Zhang Fanzhi didn't make a sound.

"Besides, being a singer, you're running around outside all year round. What about Chen Ran? He can't possibly just look at you through video calls every day, right."

What Zhang Ruyi said was the truth. She didn't know what her sister was thinking and just wanted to ask clearly.

"You don't need to worry about this." After Zhang Fanzhi finished speaking, she rolled over and turned her back to her.

Zhang Ruyi curled her lips. Sensing that her sister's mood was a bit complicated, she didn't say anything more.

……

The next morning.

Chen Ran received a call from Zhang Fanzhi.

By this ti, she was already at the airport.

When the call connected, neither of them spoke, maintaining their silence.

Chen Ran originally wanted to ask about what she had said last night, but sensing that Zhang Fanzhi was sowhat conflicted, he hesitated and ultimately didn't voice it out.

No matter what it was, talking over the phone was never as clear as talking face-to-face.

After he abandoned this thought, the awkward atmosphere of mutual silence slightly improved.

"I rember you still owe a al. Since there's no ti for it this trip, you have to make up for it when you co back next ti," Chen Ran said, pretending to be relaxed.

Zhang Fanzhi gave an "Mhm" and then said, "I'm about to board. If anything cos up, contact on WeChat."

After hanging up the phone, Chen Ran let out a heavy breath.

In both his past and present lives, he had never dated anyone, so he didn't know how to handle this kind of situation.

What made him sowhat conflicted was that he wasn't clear on Zhang Fanzhi's true thoughts.

As a celebrity, would she choose to date?

The impact of a celebrity dating was too massive; it could even ruin all the efforts she had made up to this point in a single stroke.

For the sake of singing, Zhang Fanzhi had been working hard since junior high school, through high school, college, right up to the present.

Was he really that important, enough to make Zhang Fanzhi give up the career she had always valued so highly?

Perhaps last night, Chen Ran could have asked her outright, but now that he had cald down, he instead hesitated a lot.

……

Morning eting.

The director was soliciting ideas for the entertainnt channel's annual eting program.

Everyone was enthusiastically offering their opinions; only Chen Ran didn't have much of a reaction.

Lin Fan nudged him and asked, "What's wrong today? Didn't sleep well?"

"No, just thinking about things," Chen Ran said casually.

Whatever he did today just felt a bit off.

Lin Fan added, "I have so news about the satellite TV channel here that has a little to do with you."

"What could it be that actually has sothing to do with ?" Chen Ran found it strange; he had no connections with the satellite TV channel.

"The satellite TV channel plans to prepare two programs simultaneously after the new year begins. It hasn't been finalized yet, but the news is out there. With your current track record, if you can win Best Planner, one of those programs will definitely be yours!" Lin Fan said with so excitent.

If Chen Ran won Best Planner, the satellite TV channel would definitely be willing to give him an opportunity.

Lin Fan knew Chen Ran's abilities; as long as he had the chance, he definitely wouldn't fail.

Chen Ran shook his head and laughed:

"You're being too optimistic. Right now, my chances for even Best Planner are in jeopardy, so going directly to the satellite TV channel is even more impossible."

"Two programs that broke 14% were both spearheaded and planned by you. Your chances are huge," Lin Fan said matter-of-factly.

"You have to consider the issue of overlap between the two programs. The station already placed restrictions on the Best Program nominations. When the station looks at my resu, they'll probably think my two programs combined only carry the weight of one of the satellite TV channel's programs."

Chen Ran wasn't very optimistic about himself.

Lin Fan looked at Chen Ran in surprise.

"No way, how co you have zero confidence today? You're so down."

Normally, Chen Ran was brimming with vitality, having more drive than anyone else when producing programs, yet today he felt sowhat passive and negative.

Chen Ran was slightly taken aback. "Am I?"

Lin Fan nodded without hesitation. "You are."

Chen Ran patted his own face. "Maybe I just didn't rest well last night. I'll be fine in a little while."

Lin Fan stared at Chen Ran, feeling that he wasn't telling the truth.

Could he have had a fight with his girlfriend?

Lin Fan originally wanted to gossip a bit, but recalling Chen Ran's heart-piercing words from last ti, he abandoned the idea.

Lest he fail to get any gossip and end up being stuffed with a mouthful of dog food instead—that would be too tragic to look at.
