"What did you go to see the old man for today?" Asher Land leaned half against the headboard, asking her as she ca out of the shower.
Sophie Smith’s hand paused noticeably in its motion to dry her hair upon hearing his question.
"How do, how do you know?"
"Irene told . If you don’t want to have a sleepless night, you’d better tell the truth." Asher said in a deep voice.
Irene?
How did she know?
No wonder she got back to the East Garden just a few steps behind her. She must have seen her when she went to the study to find Nathan Land.
Sophie knew that a few simple words would definitely not fool his eyes.
"Wait a minute, I’ll tell you after I finish drying my hair."
She quickly ran back to the bathroom, trying to co up with a reason while drying her hair. She definitely couldn’t let Asher Land know the truth. If he found out, he would go to Nathan Land, and it would surely be troubleso.
Just as Sophie was about to close the bathroom door, Asher pressed his foot against it, crossing his arms and looking down at her.
"I want to hear it now." His tone was an undeniable command.
Sophie knew that when this man got serious, she couldn’t win against him.
No choice, she had to speak with so hesitation.
"It’s not that I went to find your father, it’s that your father ca to find ."
"What? What did he want with you?" He beca even more perplexed.
"Isn’t it Irene’s birthday party in five days? Your father just warned not to attend, that’s all. It’s no big deal. My current status doesn’t really suit attending any events with you anyway."
She didn’t expect to be so adept at lying.
"Is that all?" His eyes practically scread ’I don’t believe you.’
"That’s it. What else could it be? You should go rest; you have to get up early for work tomorrow. I’ll finish drying my hair." She pushed him out of the bathroom and turned to close the door.
Unexpectedly, her eyes started to slowly redden.
She really didn’t know why she was being so sentintal.
When Sophie ca out of the bathroom, Asher was sitting on the bed, still not asleep.
"Why aren’t you asleep yet?" She curled up her lips and climbed onto the bed, resting her head on his chest.
He didn’t know why, but he just felt uncomfortable inside. He had a vague feeling that she wasn’t telling the truth.
He looked down at the lovely girl in his arms, lifting his left hand, which had lost its feeling, to caress her delicate little face.
He knew her skin was smooth and tender, but now this hand of his could no longer feel it.
"Sophie, I really don’t want you to lie to anymore, do you know?"
It seed like he was talking to her, but also like he was talking to himself.
But Asher, do you know there’s such a thing as a white lie? Sophie thought to herself.
Sophie didn’t respond to him again, lying peacefully in his arms with her eyes closed.
She wasn’t asleep, just avoiding his questions.
No, whatever it takes, he has to find Irene tomorrow to get to the bottom of this. He can’t allow her to hide things from him.
He knew her temperant too. If she didn’t want to talk, no one could force her. Before going upstairs, didn’t Irene remind him?
He didn’t understand what Irene supposedly knew that was so secret, even saying it was related to Sophie’s life?
He tossed and turned, unable to sleep the whole night.
