Sophie Smith wandered around aimlessly with her wine glass; she hadn’t really wanted to attend Irene Morton’s birthday party.
Just thinking about possibly having to stand beneath the stage later, accepting the reality that Asher Land was going to be engaged to Irene, made her heart ache terribly, as if she were suffocating.
She raised the glass to her lips and took a large sip.
At this mont, she truly wanted the alcohol to numb her, but she had to maintain her composure. After all, in such a public place, she had to be mindful of her image; she absolutely couldn’t let herself act recklessly here.
"Miss Smith, is it?" A voice she was not familiar with sounded behind her. She turned around, surprised, to see a tall and laid-back man standing about five ters away from her.
Oh, Sophie rembered now. This was the man she had seen at the casino with Asher Land last ti.
His na was Nolan Davis.
But at this mont, she didn’t plan on pretending to be familiar with him because she had a premonition that this man wasn’t the type to trust.
Though she didn’t know whether forming such an impression of him—labeling him as ’untrustworthy’—was right or wrong, her genuine feeling was that on this unfamiliar European Continent, she didn’t want to associate with such businessn.
"Hello, may I ask who you are..." Sophie’s tone carried a hint of politeness and unfamiliarity.
"My na is Nolan Davis. Miss Smith sure seems to forget easily. We t at the casino not too long ago and played at the bar. You’ve forgotten so quickly?" Nolan Davis gently swirled the red liquid in his glass, a subtle smile on his lips.
He had quite a strong impression of her; to him, she was the woman the Third Young Master of Golden Era Consortium couldn’t afford to lose.
Interesting.
Sophie showed a hint of discomfort on her face, and seeing his smile, she felt even more uneasy at heart.
If she were to just turn and leave now, she thought it might seem tactless, yet if she went forward to converse with him, she felt uncomfortable.
Caught in a dilemma, Nolan Davis slowly approached her.
"Miss Smith, where is Third Young Master Land? Why isn’t he by your side?"
"Miss Morton’s birthday banquet is being held here at the Land Family’s place; he’s the host and surely has to attend to other guests. He can’t be solely focused on ." Sophie responded nonchalantly.
"Oh, really?" Nolan Davis looked not far ahead, noticing Irene Morton happily chatting with a group while holding Asher Land’s arm.
Sophie saw Nolan Davis lost in thought and followed his gaze...
Today, Asher Land and Irene Morton looked very much like the protagonists of this evening’s event, while she was just an observer watching from afar.
She didn’t want to say anything further and took steps toward going upstairs.
The main banquet hall had too many people; no matter where she stood, she felt uneasy, so it was better to find a hiding spot upstairs now.
Nolan Davis watched her retreating figure, akin to fleeing in haste, a aningful smile lingering in his eyes. After a mont, he placed his wine glass on the tray of a waiter and followed her upstairs.
Upstairs was indeed much quieter. She casually opened a room door, and as she stepped in and turned to close the door, Nolan Davis swiftly slipped in.
"You..." Sophie was sowhat displeased with his attitude.
"There are too many people downstairs, too noisy. I’m having a headache today and wanted to co up to rest. Does Miss Smith want to chase away?" Nolan Davis flashed an innocent smile, "Please don’t chase away, alright? I’ll rest for just ten minutes."
