The Hurricane raged on, ruthlessly bombarding Gyarados.
The shield from Sterak's Gage shattered. As Gyarados was exposed to the relentless wind blades once more, the final shield—from Bloodthirster—triggered.
The Hurricane finally stopped.
Gyarados also stopped moving. Its massive body was riddled with countless small cuts from the wind blades.
In the air, Charizard flapped its wings, exhaling a small puff of fla that dissipated in the air. Its eyes remained fixed on the sea serpent below.
"ROAAAARR!!!! —"
Below, the head-hanging Gyarados suddenly moved. It slowly raised its head, looked up at Charizard, and let out a roar that shook the heavens.
The roar was filled with rage. Its eyes were wide with fury. Despite its injuries and heavily depleted stamina, its aura and fighting spirit surged like a tsunami, crashing toward Charizard. It was even more terrifying now than when it had first entered the field at full health.
BOOM!!! —
Gyarados coiled its body slightly, then launched itself like a blue missile, rocketing straight up toward Charizard.
Charizard's pupils shrank. Boosted by four Dragon Dances, Gyarados's speed using Waterfall had reached an astonishing level.
In a split second, Charizard realized that given their relative speeds, the chance of dodging was extrely low.
So, Charizard didn't hesitate. Facing the incoming Gyarados, it flapped its wings violently, launching an Air Slash directly at the charging leviathan.
BANG!!! —
With an explosive sound, Gyarados, shrouded in the Waterfall, smashed right through the cross-shaped air blades, shattering them.
Having broken through the Air Slash, Gyarados continued its charge without slowing down.
Charizard was a typical Special Attacker. Knowing Gyarados had stacked four Dragon Dances (boosting Attack and Speed), it turned tail and fled imdiately.
But Gyarados was fueled by rage. It wasn't about to let Charizard escape so easily. It gave chase.
Charizard flapped its wings desperately, glancing back over its shoulder.
Gyarados was like a relentless blue torpedo, sticking close to its tail. The distance between them was closing fast.
At this rate, being caught was only a matter of ti.
The two Pokémon moved incredibly fast. Crossing the entire arena took only seconds.
Soon, Charizard was backed into a corner with nowhere left to run. Suddenly, it reversed direction. It dove down, flipped in mid-air, and threw a punch crackling with electricity straight at Gyarados.
Thunder Punch!!!
Gyarados roared, reacting instantly. It stopped its charge, not dodging the incoming Thunder Punch. Instead, it twisted its body and whipped its tail down toward Charizard.
Aqua Tail!!!
Aqua Tail collided with Thunder Punch.
With a thunderous BOOM, Charizard's punch was overpowered and knocked back. In the next instant, the massive, thick tail—almost as wide as Charizard's body—slamd down onto the dragon.
CRASH!!! —
Charizard's eyes bulged, nearly popping out of its sockets. Its mouth gaped open, tongue lolling out, as its round belly caved in under the impact.
Charizard plumted straight down, smashing into the ground with a deafening crash that shook the entire arena.
Dust billowed up.
When the dust settled, Charizard lay in a crater, the ground beneath it concave. This testified to the terrifying power of Gyarados's Aqua Tail.
Charizard lay on the ground, the fla on its tail flickering weakly. Its eyes were wide but unfocused, clearly still dazed from the blow.
A single Aqua Tail from Gyarados had nearly knocked it out cold.
But soon, life returned to Charizard's eyes. Its hand twitched. Slowly, painfully, it flipped over and pushed itself up. Its movents were slow; it was severely injured.
Charizard panted heavily, then slowly raised its head. Its gaze sharpened, and it let out a roar.
"Char!!! —"
As if sensing its fighting spirit, the dying fla on its tail suddenly flared up with a whoosh.
The fire burned higher and fiercer than even when Charizard was at full health.
Blaze Ability! Triggered!!!
Blaze: Powers up Fire-type moves when the Pokémon's HP is low.
The extent of the power boost depended on the Pokémon's will to fight.
Thump... Thump...
Charizard spread its legs, adopting a stance. Clearly, this next attack would be an all-out strike, burning the last of its energy.
"Charizard!!! Blast Burn!!!"
"CHAR!!!! —"
Charizard opened its mouth. The fla on its tail erupted, shooting higher than its head.

Blast Burn. A Fire-type ultimate move with 150 base power. Using it leaves the user unable to move for a short ti. Like Hyper Beam, it's a high-risk, high-reward move.
Although powerful, it's rarely used in serious battles because the recharge turn is fatal if the attack misses or fails to KO the opponent.
But for Charizard right now, the recharge penalty was irrelevant. This was do or die.
Boosted by Blaze, the 150-power STAB move released a heat so intense it raised the temperature of the entire arena.
