As the sun set in the west and dusk settled over the Vermillion City harbor, the S.S. Anne docked at the port.
Silas stepped off the ship and stretched lazily. At long last, this journey had co to an end.
After finishing his match that day and attending the evening banquet, he had gotten to know quite a few fellow trainers around his age. They even exchanged friend contacts with each other.
The following two days were spent hanging out with them chatting, snacking on sunflower seeds, swimming, and playing gas together.
Sotis, when they were in the mood, they'd also engage in a few friendly 1v1 battles.
Silas even used his Roggenrola in so of those matches. There were wins and losses. After all,Roggenrola was only at Level 18, so it was perfectly normal for him to lose to Pokémon that were nearing Advance-level strength.
As for Combusken and Pidgeot, he didn't bother using them. There was no need.
Every afternoon, he'd go fishing for Pokémon at a set ti and location, spending ti with the older fishern. He'd chat with them and ask for advice. That's how his days passed.
To be honest, living like this was fine for a day or two, but after spending five whole days on the ship like this, Silas was getting restless.
In his previous life, he probably would've collapsed from boredom. But his experiences in this life had awakened a fiery sense of adventure in him. All he wanted to do now was train and travel.
Resting? What was that?
So the mont the S.S. Anne docked, he quickly said goodbye to the people he knew and rushed off the ship without hesitation.
Otherwise, he would've had to stand around making small talk with everyone.
"Gotta say, having my feet on solid ground again feels amazing," Silas sighed with satisfaction.
He hurried toward the Pokémon Center, wondering whether there were still any rooms left. If not, he'd have to find a guesthouse or hotel.
Then he rembered the Leaf Stone that was waiting for him at the Pokémon Center, and just that thought lifted his spirits. His steps grew lighter with excitent.
When he arrived, he asked Nurse Joy about room availability. Fortunately, a few rooms were still open, so Silas quickly reserved one.
He pulled out his Trainer ID and casually ntioned that he had an item stored here under his na.
After confirming his identity, Nurse Joy retrieved an elegant brocade box from beneath the counter and handed it to Silas.
Holding the box, he discreetly checked the contents. After confirming it was the correct item, he thanked Nurse Joy and headed back to his room.
After all, wealth shouldn't be flaunted. He couldn't just pop open the box in the middle of the Pokémon Center lobby and shout, "I just got rich!"
Besides, the reason he wanted the Leaf Stone was to prepare in advance for raising his next Pokémon.
Roggenrola only needed special rocks to support its developnt, and no evolutionary stone for its type had ever been discovered.
Many Pokémon researchers believed that natural special stones in the wild were essentially the best "evolutionary stones" for Rock- and Ground-type Pokémon.
Although these stones couldn't trigger evolution, they could et all sorts of needs more than just energy boosts.
In terms of nurturing, these special stones were often even more effective than actual evolutionary stones. If there ever was such a thing as a Rock-type or Ground-type Evolutionary Stone, that would be the comparison.
As for Combusken, it could absorb energy from a Fire Stone to speed up its growth.
But Silas felt like it was already progressing fast enough. Any faster, and it might struggle to maintain proper control over its strength.
Also, considering that he wanted to maintain balance across his six-mber main team—despite differences in strength—he couldn't just keep focusing all his resources on Combusken. That would lead to imbalance and wouldn't benefit him in the long run.
So, when it ca ti to pick a reward for this tournant, he chose the Leaf Stone, since his fourth planned Pokémon was supposed to be a Grass-type.
Of course, all of that would have to wait until Combusken and Reggenrola fully evolved into their final forms. There was no rush just yet.
But that also ant the Leaf Stone would be in his possession for a while, and that made it feel a little unsafe.
After thinking for a mont, Silas pulled out his wristwatch and started making a call.
"Beep—"
"Hello, this is Brock speaking." The call connected quickly.
"Drop the act. I know you've already heard the news," Silas rolled his eyes, though Brock obviously couldn't see him. "I picked the Leaf Stone. I'll send it to you later. It should arrive tomorrow. Make sure to receive it."
"Sure, no problem. For stuff like this, you could've just ssaged ," Brock replied casually.
"Yeah, well, the main reason I called was to ask how that thing I asked you to look into is going. The Leaf Stone part is just incidental," Silas said as he plopped down on the couch.
"There's no issue there. First off, that technology does exist." Brock paused for a mont; the sound of background noise vanished, indicating he'd moved sowhere quieter.
"I looked into it. The tech really does exist, but it's extrely underdeveloped. There's no hope of success in the near future. Most organizations have only invested a minimal amount into the research. It's a high-level project."
"Even Pewter Gym is just letting the museum run its own research. After all, this kind of tech is basically about reversing ti and creating life way too hard."
"Honestly, I didn't even realize such a thing existed. When you asked about it, I was totally caught off guard. How'd you even co up with the idea?"
"It's nothing. A newbie challenged my Combusken the other day, and we bet sothing small. Plus, I think I read a paper on the subject before. It got curious, so I asked you to see if that technology was real."
Silas replied calmly.
"Oh, I see. Also, I almost forgot you asked to talk to my uncle, right? Got news on that too," Brock said, his tone suddenly lifting like he'd just rembered.
"...You don't have to shout. I can hear you just fine—I'm not deaf," Silas said flatly.
"Hehe." Brock chuckled awkwardly. "So, my uncle Bruno said he'd be willing to give your Roggenrola a few pointers once he's back. He's off sowhere really far right now it took a while to get in touch with him."
Silas made a noise of acknowledgnt. "I'll send you the training plan I made for your Geodude later. I finished it while I was on the ship."
"Aweso!" Brock said happily. "Perfect timing. Geodude's been slacking lately. I'll use this as a chance to whip him into shape."
"Alright, that's it then. Talk later. Bye."
"Bye!"
Silas hung up and reflected on the conversation.
So, the current fossil revival technology wasn't complete. They'd only just scratched the surface. No one knew how long developnt would take or what the process would involve.
He hesitated a bit. Sure, flipping rare items like fossils could lead to huge profits, but the research tiline didn't care about his plans.
Investing heavily into stockpiling fossils was risky business, especially with their high market value.
And there were still a lot of unknowns like how large the fossils needed to be, or whether the amount of preserved genetic material affected the quality of the revived Pokémon.
All big questions.
Silas rubbed his temples. Turns out this money-making sche wasn't as easy as he thought.
He decided to shelve the idea for now he didn't have that much spare capital anyway.
In the best-case scenario, Brock would rember his interest in the project once the research made progress and toss him a bone.
After all, once these rare, previously extinct Pokémon beca available again, there would be a massive rush. The value of fossils would easily skyrocket several tis over.
If he could just get a piece of that, it would already be a big win.
With that thought, he ntally shelved the idea just another moneymaking plan killed in the cradle.
Making money these days was too damn hard.
He also realized he couldn't go to the Rock Tunnel area for now.
He had no idea how strong the fossil Pokémon down there really were. From what he vaguely rembered from the ani in his previous life, that place was filled with ancient Pokémon and was pretty dangerous.
And as for the strength and behavior shown in the ani? He didn't trust any of it. At the end of the day, this world was real.
A lot of things had changed. Relying on the ga or ani's worldview would only get him killed, so he had to be cautious.
Fossil Pokémon lived in ancient tis, and most of them were carnivorous. Unlike modern Pokémon that had been tad and trained over generations, those ancient ones still had their wild instincts.
The ones underground had survived from ancient tis. Who knew how starved they were? If he wasn't strong enough, he'd just be walking into a death trap.
Besides, that area was a hotbed for fossil excavation. Sneaking in unnoticed would be impossible.
The best solution would be to have a powerful Psychic-type Pokémon that would take care of everything.
Speaking of which, if only he had started out with a Psychic-type, he'd be soaring high by now.
He sighed.
The only good news was that Brock's uncle, Bruno, was willing to train him once he got back.
As the younger brother of a Martial Arts Master, Bruno wasn't lacking in strength.
According to Brock, his uncle had the power of an Elite Four mber. He just never registered officially because he was always traveling the world on adventures.
He didn't care about the perks that ca with the title. Backed by the Pewter Gym, he didn't need any of that.
His ace Pokémon was a pseudo-legendary Tyranitar a true Desert Tyrant.
And his second strongest was a Gigalith, specialized in defense and energy output similar to the role Silas had in mind for his own Roggenrola.
That's why, after learning about him, Silas asked Brock to see if Bruno could help.
Looks like his luck wasn't too bad after all.
Brock probably went out of his way to make it happen. Silas made a ntal note to thank him properly next ti.
With that, he hurried to send the training plan he'd made for Geodude to Brock.
Then he reviewed his tasks to make sure he didn't forget anything. As for the Leaf Stone, he could have the Pokémon Center mail it directly to Pewter Gym in the morning.
He'd drop it off on his way out for training, and it should arrive by the afternoon.
By his calculations, there were about six months left until the next Indigo Conference.
Vermilion City didn't seem like the best place for training or completing missions.
Silas tapped his fingers against the armrest of the sofa. So, should he just go and grab the Vermilion Gym Badge tomorrow?
