Now reading: Chapter 101 101: Battle! The Veiled Dojo from Pokemon: Mastering the Unseen Type, a Adventure novel by Shadowscale.

The atmosphere in the Veilstone Gym was thick enough to chew on. This wasn't like the Gardenia's forest gym or the technological marvel of a specialized facility; this was a place of wood, grit, and the relentless pursuit of physical perfection.

He Zhi, the referee, stood tall, his flags held with the precision of a lifelong martial artist. He glanced between Julian and Grandpa Aaron, ensuring the caras were rolling and the apprentices were settled.

"I hereby officially announce that the battle for the Veilstone Gym's Cobble Badge is about to begin!" He Zhi's voice echoed off the high rafters. "The challenger is Julian from Sandgem Town, and the defending leader is Grandpa Aaron!"

"This will be a three-on-three match! The battle concludes when all three Pokémon on either side are unable to continue! Only the challenger has the right to substitute! Trainers, ready? Begin!"

Ding!

"Let the passion burn everything! Witness the strength of a lifeti's training! Go—Machoke!" Aaron roared. He didn't just throw the ball; he stepped into a deep karate stance, punching the air as the white light erupted.

The Machoke that erged was a mountain of grey, corded muscle. He stood with his arms crossed, his golden belt gleaming, looking like he could bench-press the entire building. The sheer intimidation factor was high—Machoke weren't just strong; they were relentless.

Julian's eyes narrowed. He had originally planned to start with Growlithe to let the little guy gain experience, but looking at this Machoke... it wasn't a "rookie" Pokémon. It had the eyes of a veteran.

"Tsk. Machoke, huh? Change of plans," Julian muttered, retracting Growlithe's Poké Ball before he could even toss it. "Sorry, buddy, you're not ready for this opener. I'm counting on you—Sylveon!"

Sylveon appeared with a graceful spin, her pink-and-white ribbons fluttering like silk in the breeze. She looked delicate compared to the titan across from her, but she radiated a calm, shimring aura.

"Haha! A Fairy-type to counter my Fighting spirit?" Aaron laughed, his white beard bristling. "Classic strategy! But a true martial artist swims against the current! We haven't had a proper match against your kind in years! Machoke, show them the speed of the fist! Bullet Punch!"

Aaron didn't just command; he acted. As he yelled the order, he threw a flurry of shadow-punches. Machoke, perfectly synchronized with his master, lunged forward. His fists were wrapped in a cold, tallic silver light—Steel-type energy.

"Sylveon, intercept with Swift!" Julian commanded.

"Fly ah~! (Catch if you can, big guy!)" 🎀

Sylveon flicked her ribbons, and a stream of golden, star-shaped rays, infused with a distinct pink Fairy glow, spiraled toward the charging Machoke. Because of her Pixilate ability, those stars weren't just light; they were heavy, magical projectiles.

Machoke didn't flinch. He punched through the stars, his silver fists shattering the golden energy like glass. Crack! Crack! Crack! The arena was suddenly filled with sparkling dust, but through the shimring cloud, Machoke erged. He was panting, his grey skin covered in scratches where the Fairy energy had scorched him, but his eyes were burning with a terrifying "Never-Say-Die" spirit.

Julian felt a chill. He's only Official Class, but he survived a Pixilate-boosted, super-effective Swift from an Elite-ranked Sylveon? "Hahaha! Is that all the Fairy-type can do?" Aaron yelled. "Machoke, show him our will! Reversal!"

Reversal—a move that grew exponentially more powerful the closer the user was to fainting. Machoke was currently a walking bruise, which ant this attack was going to be a nuke.

Machoke erupted in a crimson fighting aura. He charged, ignoring the pain, shattering the next wave of Swift stars with his bare hands. He was closing the distance at a terrifying speed.

Σ(⊙▽⊙"a Are you kidding ?! Julian's mind went into overdrive. He's pulling an 'Ash Ketchum' move! He's ignoring the laws of physics and type matchups through pure guts!

Julian had a sudden, horrifying vision of the future. He saw himself standing on the Sinnoh League podium, a reporter shoving a microphone in his face: "Champion Julian, is it true your Elite Sylveon once lost to a half-dead Machoke in a Gym match?"

"No! Absolutely not!" Julian roared, his competitive streak flaring up. "Sylveon, stop playing nice! Hyper Voice! Full power!"

Sylveon saw the panic in Julian's eyes and understood the assignnt. She planted her feet, opened her mouth wide, and let out a sound that shook the wooden rafters of the dojo.

"FLY-AHHHHHH!" 🎀🔊

A massive, visible wave of pink energy slamd into Machoke just as his fist was inches from Sylveon's nose. The sheer pressure of the sound wave sent the grey giant skidding backward, his feet carving deep furrows into the dirt. When the dust settled, Machoke was flat on his back, eyes swirled.

"Machoke is unable to battle! Sylveon wins!" He Zhi announced.

Julian wiped sweat from his brow. "That was way too close. Grandpa Aaron is definitely sandbagging, but even his 'holding back' is dangerous."

The Yoga Master

In the stands, Maylene leaned forward, her eyes bright. "Wow, Grandpa really pushed that Sylveon! But that challenger is sharp. He didn't let the montum shift."

The blonde girl beside her nodded, her Riolu watching the field with intense focus. "The Sylveon is strong, but look at Ah Long Senior. He's not discouraged. He's getting even more excited."

On the field, Aaron recalled Machoke with a warm smile. "You did well, my friend. You showed them our spirit. Now, let's change the pace! Go, dicham!"

A red, humanoid figure appeared, floating cross-legged in mid-air. It was the ditate Pokémon. dicham was a nightmare of a dual-type: Fighting and Psychic. But its real terror lay in its ability: Pure Power, which doubled its physical attack strength.

"Sylveon, let's slow things down. Yawn!" Julian called out.

Sylveon released a pink, sleepy bubble that drifted lazily toward the ditating dicham.

"dicham, let the opponent feel our focus! Cosmic Power!" Aaron countered.

dicham didn't dodge. It perford a series of strange, fluid yoga poses in mid-air, its body glowing with a mystical light that boosted its defenses. The Yawn bubble hit dicham and popped.

Nothing happened. dicham didn't even blink.

Julian stared in disbelief. "What? It didn't fall asleep? It wasn't even a Protect move!"

"Haha! Young Julian," Aaron explained, "my dicham has ditated under freezing waterfalls for months! Its mind is a fortress. A re 'sensation' like a Yawn cannot disturb a spirit that is already one with the universe!"

Great, Julian thought. I'm fighting a Pokémon that's literally too zen to get tired. "If that's the case, Sylveon, use Swift again to keep it busy!"

As Sylveon launched her stars, dicham opened its eyes. It intercepted the stars with Ice Punch, its fists wreathed in freezing blue energy. Clang! Clang! It looked like it was dancing.

"Now's the ti!" Julian seized the mont. He knew Sylveon's Fairy moves were resisted by dicham's focus, and he needed a different kind of heat. "Sylveon, return! I'm counting on you, Growlithe!"

The red light of the Poké Ball revealed the orange-and-black fluff-ball of energy. Growlithe hit the ground and let out a defiant bark. Having trained under the best fire-specialists in the region, he had finally pushed into the Official Class.

"Growlithe, this is your first real Gym Match! Let's show them the fire we've been building!"

"Woof! (Bring it on, I'm starving for a win!)" 🐾
