Now reading: Chapter 107 107: Finally Obtained! The Curtain Badge! from Pokemon: Mastering the Unseen Type, a Adventure novel by Shadowscale.

The air in the Veilstone Gym was thick enough to chew. The static of Aura and the sweet scent of scorched petals hung over the dirt floor like a heavy blanket. Julian could feel the exhaustion radiating from Floette—a cold, sinking sensation that mirrored his own fatigue.

"Keep going! We won't give up until the very end!" Julian's voice cracked slightly from the effort, but the fire in his eyes was unmistakable.

"Hahaha! That's the spirit I've been waiting for!" Grandpa Aaron's laughter was a physical force, echoing off the high wooden beams. "In that case, let's see if your resolve can handle the pressure! Lucario, Force Palm!"

Lucario's right paw surged with a concentrated blue light. He didn't just strike; he thrust forward with the focused intent of a mountain collapsing.

"Block it with Fairy Wind!" Julian countered, swinging his arm with a desperate flair.

The blue shockwave t the pink, glittering gale in the center of the ring. For a heartbeat, they were perfectly balanced, but the power gap was becoming undeniable. The Force Palm tore through the Fairy Wind, shattering the pink storm like glass. However, the effort of breaking the wind had drained the move's montum. Floette, sensing the danger, perford a delicate mid-air pirouette, dodging the primary blast by a hair's breadth.

The Force Palm struck the ground behind her, erupting in a plu of dust and splinters.

Julian's heart sank. Floette was flagging. Her movents were no longer the graceful flight of a butterfly; they were the erratic twitches of a creature at its limit. Across the field, Lucario was panting, his weighted bands clearly taking a toll on his endurance, but he still had plenty of fuel in the tank. If this turned into a war of attrition, Julian knew they would lose.

We need one final, decisive strike, Julian thought. A move with enough heart to make even a legend stop in his tracks.

"Floette! Use every last drop of your strength! One final, ultimate Fairy Wind!"

"FLOOOO-ETTE!!!" 🌸✨

The tiny Pokémon roared—or at least, she gave the fiercest cry a creature of her size could manage. She channeled her remaining energy into her blue flower, spinning it so fast it beca a blur of azure. A massive, swirling storm of pink-and-silver energy erupted, surging toward Lucario with the force of a tidal wave.

Grandpa Aaron's grin widened. He looked at the storm, then at the young man who was practically vibrating with the sa frequency as his Pokémon. He saw the amateur, unrefined Aura flaring around Julian—a sign of a Trainer who had pushed himself past his physical limits for the sake of his partner.

"Hahaha! Is this the final move to decide the victor?" Aaron nodded in deep approval. He caught Lucario's eye, and a silent understanding passed between the two lifelong friends. He's earned it, hasn't he? Aaron's gaze seed to ask.

Lucario responded with a faint, knowing smile—a rare expression for the stoic warrior. He acknowledged this challenger, whose Aura was like a flickering candle in a storm, yet refused to be blown out.

"Lucario! Show them the true depth of our bond! Aura Sphere!"

Lucario cupped his paws. A sapphire-blue orb ford, but it wasn't just energy; it was a manifestation of Lucario's own spirit. He launched it just as the Fairy Wind reached him.

BOOM!

The collision was spectacular. Pink and blue particles exploded outward, filling the arena with a shimring, iridescent mist. The shockwave rattled the windows of the dojo, and for a few long seconds, nothing could be seen through the swirling curtains of energy.

He Zhi, the referee, squinted through the haze. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a remote, and clicked a button. Vents in the ceiling and floor hissed to life, rapidly sucking the smoke out of the arena.

As the air cleared, the crowd gasped.

Lucario was lying on his back, his fur disheveled and his weighted bands smoking. He wasn't unconscious, but he was pinned, looking up at the ceiling with a satisfied expression. Beside him, Floette was still in the air—barely. She was hovering just an inch off the ground, her tiny body trembling as she gasped for breath.

He Zhi looked at Grandpa Aaron. The Gym Leader gave a subtle, almost imperceptible nod.

"Lucario is unable to battle!" He Zhi announced, raising his flag high. "The victory goes to the challenger, Julian from Sandgem Town!"

The mont the words left the referee's mouth, Floette's eyes rolled back. Her tiny wings stopped fluttering, and she began to fall.

Julian was already moving. He dived across the dirt, his hands outstretched. He caught her just inches before she hit the ground, cradling her small, bruised form against his chest.

"You worked so hard, Floette," Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You did it. You really did it."

He imdiately pulled out a soft handkerchief, gently wiping the soot and dust from her petals. He sprayed a Potion on her scuffs, his hands steady despite the adrenaline still coursing through his veins.

The Legend's Approval

The dojo was a cacophony of voices.

"He actually won? Against Master's Lucario?" a new apprentice asked, his mouth hanging open.

"Is that guy a hidden pro?" another chirped.

"Quiet down!" the Senior Disciple barked, though even his voice held a note of awe. "Master was teaching. He showed that kid more in ten minutes than you've learned in a year. If you can't see the 'Guts' in that final clash, you don't belong in this Gym! I want a three-page summary of today's match on my desk by tomorrow!"

In the front row, Maylene elbowed the blonde girl. "See? I told you it was worth skipping the morning drills. That was so high-level stuff."

"Yeah," the blonde girl replied, resting her chin on her hand as she watched Julian treat his Floette. "I didn't realize Aura Sphere could be detonated like that. And that 'Petal-Psychic' trick? I need to tell my grandfather about that. This Julian is... he's definitely one to watch."

The Proof of the Veil

Grandpa Aaron and Lucario walked over to Julian. The Lucario was back on his feet now, looking remarkably refreshed for a Pokémon that had just been "defeated." He gave Julian a respectful nod, his red eyes no longer piercing, but warm.

"Hahahaha! Young man, you did exceptionally well!" Aaron said, his voice returning to its jovial roar. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a square, yellowish-brown badge. It was ford of four interlocking rectangles, looking like a solid block of carved stone.

"You showed more than just a win today," Aaron continued. "You showed the fiery will of a Trainer who refuses to bow to a superior force. You showed 'Guts.' And most importantly, you didn't let the heat of the mont make you forget your partner's well-being. You've earned my approval, and you've certainly earned his."

Lucario barked once in agreent.

"This is the Cobble Badge," Aaron said, holding it out. "In our city, it represents the unyielding strength of the earth. Wear it with pride."

Julian carefully tucked Floette into her Poké Ball to rest and stood up. He looked at the badge, then at the "defeated" Lucario. He wasn't a fool; he knew that if Lucario had truly wanted to, the battle would have ended in seconds. The "defeat" was a gift—a sign of recognition for his tactical brilliance and spirit.

"Thank you, Gym Leader Aaron," Julian said, bowing respectfully. "Thank you for the lesson."

Suddenly, Julian rembered his tradition. He fumbled with his backpack and pulled out his cara, handing it to Maylene in the front row. "Excuse ! Could you help take a photo? I'm recording my journey!"

"Oh! You bet!" Maylene hopped over the railing, grinning.

Julian hurried back to Aaron's side, feeling a bit sheepish for the interruption. "Sorry for the wait, sir."

"Hahaha! No apologies needed! Recording the journey is a fine habit!" Aaron slapped Julian on the back, nearly sending the boy into the dirt. He struck a classic "strongman" pose, and Lucario stood regally beside him.
