Kyra’s POV
I woke up at 4 AM. Despite sleeping on Emily’s couch, I had managed to get comfortable rest since it was spacious enough.
After washing my face and tying my hair in a ssy bun, I went to the kitchen to make breakfast. Cooking always cald my nerves, especially after last night.
Once breakfast was ready, I decided to go for a morning jog to clear my head. I left a note on the dining table, locked up Emily’s apartnt, and headed for the elevator. I stretched my arms as I put my earbuds in.
Nathan’s voice from last night still echoed in my mind, especially the crushing mont when I heard Sophia in the background. Even though we had no relationship anymore, he had promised to wait for . He had told he loved .
If this was another misunderstanding, I honestly didn’t know what to do anymore.
I had just finished my thirty-minute jog and was walking back to the building when my phone buzzed. Luke’s na appeared on the screen.
"Luke?" I answered, slightly breathless from my run.
"Miss Kyra, I need to see you imdiately." His voice was urgent, tense. "I found sothing about your mother’s death. There’s a connection I never saw before."
My heart raced. "I’m outside the building now. Where are you?"
"I’m approaching from the west side. et at the front entrance in two minutes."
I quickened my pace.
As I rounded the corner, I spotted Luke across the street. He was wearing a black hoodie, his powerful fra unmistakable even at a distance. He caught sight of and raised his hand in greeting.
That’s when I noticed a red dot dancing across his chest.
"LUKE! GET DOWN!" I scread.
Everything happened so quickly. The rifle cracked through the morning air. Luke’s body jerked as the silver bullet struck his heart—the only thing that could hurt a warrior wolf like him.
Before he could even fall, a white car swerved around the corner at impossible speed, deliberately aiming straight for him. The impact was devastating, sending his already wounded body flying several feet.
"NO!" I scread as I sprinted toward him.
The car sped away without license plates.
I reached Luke’s side, dropping to my knees beside his blood-soaked body. His eyes were open but unfocused, blood pouring from his mouth and the wound in his chest.
A warrior of his caliber should have been able to heal from almost any normal injury, but the silver bullet had done its job, preventing his regenerative abilities from working.
"L-Luke..." My voice broke as I pressed my hands against his chest, trying desperately to stop the bleeding.
His lips moved slightly, trying to form words.
"Soone call an ambulance!" I scread at the gathering crowd, though I already knew it was too late. No wolf survived a direct silver bullet to the heart.
The security guards from the condominium rushed over, already calling ergency services. My hands trembled violently as I held Luke’s rapidly cooling hand.
"Stay with , please," I begged, tears streaming down my face. "You can’t die like this. You’re too strong to die like this!"
But the light was already fading from his eyes. By the ti the ambulance arrived, I knew I had lost him. The paradics worked furiously, but when we reached the hospital, the doctor delivered the final verdict.
"Ti of death, 7:36 AM. We’re sorry, ma’am. The bullet went straight through his heart. There was nothing we could do."
I stood there, staring at Luke’s body, now covered with a white sheet slowly being stained red.
He had been the first to know about my child. He had always been by my side, a loyal friend and protector. And now he was gone because he’d discovered sothing soone desperately wanted to keep hidden.
"Ma’am, here are his belongings," the nurse said gently, handing Luke’s watch, wallet, and phone.
My hands trembled as I took them, staring at his phone. Had this happened because he was helping ? I turned it on, quickly scrolling through his call log. My heart raced when I saw his younger brother’s na. The poor kid would be devastated.
I noticed two unsaved numbers in his recent calls. I quickly copied them to my phone and checked his photos and ssages, but found nothing suspicious. Whoever killed Luke had made sure to stop him before he could tell anyone what he found.
"Kyra!"
I looked up through tear-blurred eyes to see Emily rushing toward .
"Are you okay? I heard what happened from the security. Are you hurt?"
"He’s dead, Emily," I said with grief and rage. "He was helping , and now he’s..."
"Shh, it’s not your fault," she soothed, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.
I shook my head. "I need to talk to the police and find out who did this. This wasn’t an accident. Soone shot him with a silver bullet before running him over. They wanted to make absolutely sure he was dead."
Emily gasped, understanding the significance. Only another wolf would use silver, knowing its deadly effect on our kind.
"I’ll take it from here," she said firmly. "I’ll call his relatives."
I swallowed hard and took a deep breath. "He... doesn’t have parents. Just a younger brother and sister. I-I’ll talk to them later."
"Don’t stress yourself too much, Kyra. Phoebe’s still with Snow. I told her not to leave while we’re gone."
"I need to leave for a while, Emily."
"Be careful." Her eyes were serious, understanding the danger that might now be targeting as well.
I nodded before heading out. I caught a taxi, not bothering to change my clothes, which were still stained with Luke’s blood. I needed answers, and I needed them now. Luke wouldn’t have contacted unless it was urgent. His face had been deadly serious when I saw him this morning. He had wanted to tell sothing important, but soone had made sure he never got the chance.
The taxi dropped at the police station, where I imdiately approached the front desk.
"Good morning, I’m Kyra Monroe. I want to know who’s in charge of investigating the shooting and hit-and-run in front of Paradise Residences. The victim was a close friend of mine."
An officer raised his hand. "Miss Monroe, over here."
I walked toward him, my gaze falling on printed photos of the cri scene—the road stained with Luke’s blood.
"It was a white car without license plates," I said, eting the officer’s eyes. "And before that, he was shot."
He nodded. "Yes, ma’am. The car was caught on CCTV footage, but as you said, there were no plates."
"Soone planned this. The shooter, the driver—they knew exactly what they were doing."
"We’re still investigating, ma’am," the officer said. "You can leave your contact information so we can update you about the investigation."
I took a deep breath. "What about the shooter? Or the driver?"
"The driver was caught on CCTV but was wearing a mask and hoodie, ma’am. As for the shooter, we’re still trying to determine where the shot ca from."
"Damn it!" I cursed loudly. "Officer, please help us. We need to catch whoever did this."
"We’re doing our best, ma’am," the police officer assured , though I knew this was likely beyond what human law enforcent could handle.
I left the station with renewed determination. I wouldn’t let this go. Luke’s death would not be in vain. I had several suspects in mind already—Kieran, Connor Foster, Sara Foster or her husband. Perhaps even Sophia, though shooting seed too direct for her style.
All I knew was that I would seek justice for Luke, just as I would for my parents.
