Kyra’s POV
I waited almost four hours outside the operating room before Emily’s surgeon finally erged. Matt imdiately jumped up from his chair despite his unhealed wound.
"Doctor, how is she?" I asked urgently.
The doctor removed his mask, looking exhausted. "The surgery was successful. She wasn’t wearing a seatbelt during the accident and suffered severe impact trauma, but we’ve managed to control the internal bleeding and address her other injuries."
I felt weak with relief, my knees nearly buckling. Nathan quickly steadied with his arm.
"How soon will she wake up?" Matt asked desperately.
The doctor frowned. "It’s hard to say. Her body is recovering, but her will to live seems weak. In cases like this, patients sotis need more ti."
He then turned to face us. "Who is Emily’s imdiate family? I need to discuss so matters with them."
I swallowed hard. "Her family isn’t here. I’m the closest thing she has to family right now."
The doctor hesitated. "What about her mate?"
I looked at him, confused. "Mate?" I wasn’t sure why the doctor specifically asked this, especially when we couldn’t contact Kieran anyway.
Matt quickly stepped forward. "She doesn’t have an official mate yet, but I’m her boyfriend."
The doctor nodded, his expression turning solemn. "There’s unfortunate news I must share with you. Emily lost her baby in the accident."
Matt looked like he might faint, his face instantly draining of color.
"Baby?" Matt and I both exclaid in disbelief.
Nathan remained calr than either of us, imdiately questioning the doctor. "Does Emily know about this? What will happen when she wakes up?"
"We’ll tell her when she’s conscious. Losing a baby is terrible for any woman, especially like this. She’ll probably need counseling."
Matt collapsed into a chair, cradling his head in his hands. "This is all my fault. If I hadn’t let Emily go out alone... if I’d gone with her to shop..."
"Matt, this isn’t your fault," I said, though I knew he wasn’t listening.
I entered Emily’s hospital room, and my heart shattered seeing her lying in the bed. She was the friend and sister I had found when I was struggling to survive and save myself. She made realize the importance of life and showed I still had a chance. No matter how many hardships I endured, there was always light waiting for at the end of my journey.
About a week later, the doctors announced that both Emily and Mason were stable. Eventually, they both regained consciousness, but a major problem erged that shocked deeply.
Emily had lost her mory. It was painful and cruel. While I didn’t know Emily’s entire life story, I could tell she had been through extrely difficult tis.
"Please eat sothing..." Matt begged as he tried to feed her.
Emily stared at him sharply. "Who are you? Did my father send you?"
Matt shook his head painfully. "No. Your father didn’t send . I’m... your boyfriend."
"Boyfriend? Are you joking? My boyfriend is dead! My father killed him and my baby!"
I closed my eyes tightly and walked out of the room in distress. She had experienced sothing similar in her past. That explained her hatred, her bitterness and anger toward the world, and why she despised betrayal so deeply.
"She’ll recover," Nathan said softly, pulling into a gentle embrace.
I swallowed hard and nodded. Once again, I felt lost. Our plans had been perfected, but now they seed impossible to execute because I knew Emily’s subordinates wouldn’t act without her orders. After everything that happened, my determination to bring down Connor Foster grew stronger, and with Emily’s current condition, we needed to team up with Kieran as soon as possible.
"Will you really be okay if we ask for his help?" Nathan asked tenderly while stroking my hand.
I nodded. "Yes. I’m more worried about you. You two don’t get along well, right?"
He shook his head. "Haven’t we discussed this already, Kyra? To protect you, I’ll do anything. Whether it’s teaming up with a man who’s jealous of or making a deal with the devil himself."
I caressed his cheek, my gaze drifting toward the door next to Emily’s room. Mason was inside. I hadn’t spoken to him since he woke up, but Matt said he was doing fine.
I looked at Nathan. "I want to talk to him."
He nodded with a reassuring smile. "I’ll wait for you here."
I pushed open Mason’s door. His eyes imdiately fell on . His gaze remained cold and angry, but I could see guilt and worry continuously surfacing in him.
"What are you doing here?" he asked before looking away.
I sighed and sat in the chair beside his bed. "I ca to see you."
"I don’t need visitors."
"But I needed to co see you."
When he turned to again, his forehead was creased. "You said my father killed your mother. How can you co see ? I’m the son of the man who murdered your mother."
I tilted my head. "Do you believe now?"
He shook his head with a sarcastic smile. "Why would I believe you?"
"Then do you believe your twin brother?"
He fell silent, clenching his jaw and looking away again. I knew it was hard for him to believe because it ant betraying the person who raised him. That wasn’t easy for them, and I understood.
I stood up, staring at him. "Emily lost her mory, and... a child. She doesn’t rember anything. I want to bla you for what happened to her, but I don’t know the full story."
He looked at then. "You think not blaming makes you a good person? Why not bla ? It’s my fault. Please! Bla ! I did that to your friend. I killed her child. I made her lose her mory. Bla —"
I didn’t let him finish. I slapped him hard. He clenched his jaw, glaring at sharply.
I took a sharp breath, looking at him with intense hatred. "If anyone should bla you, it should be Emily, because you wrongly accused her. I hope she doesn’t forgive you, because even after what you did... you remain proud, selfish, and arrogant. She lost her child, Mason. Your twin brother’s child. When her mory returns, I promise you... she’ll hate you until her dying breath."
With that, I turned and stord out of the room. I’m still trying to understand, but if he refuses to regret his actions, even if he’s my cousin, I’ll spend every penny I have to make him pay for what he’s done. I’ll put him and his parents in prison, and I swear this on the na of Emily’s lost child.
