Kyra’s POV
I was checking the list of flowers that would be delivered to my shop next week. I didn’t know how Kieran had done it, but he managed to buy a shop that could be converted into a flower shop. He told about it just this morning, and now I was excited to open my own business where I could pour all my attention.
My phone suddenly rang. It was an unregistered number. Thinking it was from the suppliers, I quickly answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Kyra, this is Nathan’s mom."
My heart instantly raced at that familiar voice. I swallowed hard as I pulled myself up, bit my bottom lip, and walked toward the window.
"Y-Yes, Luna Marlene."
She had always been kind to , and she shouldn’t be involved in any anger I had toward her son. I treasured her and treated her like my own mother—disrespecting her was sothing I would never do.
"Can we et, Kyra?"
"Why?" For what? Sylvia growled suspiciously. But I nodded instinctively. "Of course, Luna Marlene."
I heard her sigh. "Thank you. I’ll text you the address after this call. I’ll be waiting, Kyra."
For so reason, I felt a strange burden in my heart. eting her could only an she missed , or she had sothing else planned. I just hoped it didn’t concern Nathan, but who was I kidding? Nathan was the only reason we were ever connected.
After the call ended, I imdiately received a ssage from her.
This could only be about Nathan, Sylvia bristled. "She’s his mother first, your friend second. Rember that."
Kieran’s cedar and musk scent announced his arrival before he spoke. "What’s wrong?" His golden eyes—the ones that shifted from blue to blazing gold every ti his temper flared—burned with barely restrained fury, locked onto mine, reading my tension instantly.
Aside from my plan of moving out, I needed to tell him I was going to et soone. However, I shouldn’t tell him it was Luna Marlene.
"I need to go out for a while."
He walked toward with a creased forehead. "I can go with you."
I imdiately shook my head. "I can do this alone, Kieran. Besides, you have a eting, right? My father’s pack business in this country needs you."
He clenched his jaw. "I can always ditch that damn eting for you, Kyra."
"I said I can do this alone. We’ll talk about sothing when I co back, Kieran. Just wait patiently and let live my life normally. I know there’s no threat to my life anymore."
"Still..." he paused and took a deep sigh before he slowly nodded. "Fine. But I’ll pick you up later."
I turned my back on him without answering. He was overprotective. I knew he just wanted safe, but his ways were so wrong. Why couldn’t he understand that?
After showering, I left the house while Kieran watched go. He stood in the doorway, arms crossed against his chest. His forehead was still creased and his eyes shot cold stares.
I called a taxi after I frowned at him. Don’t you dare follow , Kieran!
The restaurant slled of rosemary. Luna Marlene was already waiting when I arrived. It was so rude of to keep her waiting, so I bowed my head and imdiately apologized. However, she didn’t seem pleased. She just lifted her right arm and signaled to sit. I swallowed hard and obeyed.
"Thanks for coming, Kyra."
I nodded and smiled awkwardly. She took a deep sigh before glancing at my stomach. It made anxious, so I hid my belly behind my bag. My baby bump wasn’t that obvious yet, but I guessed she had already heard about it.
"Congratulations, Kyra. I’m happy for you. I’m genuinely happy that you’ve found soone you truly love..."
My lips parted. I didn’t know where this conversation was going, but I was already starting to hate it.
She looked down, and when she looked back at , her eyes were both strict and worried. "Kyra... I wanted to et you because I want to talk to you about sothing."
"Luna Marlene—"
"Can you...stay away from my son?"
I felt a lump in my throat. She...already hated .
"You’re going to be a mother. I know soday you’ll understand why I’m asking you this. Nathan is my precious son. I love him so much, Kyra. I almost lost myself when he got into that accident...because of you."
Sylvia howled. "She blas us!"
I looked down and bit my bottom lip. Tears ford in the corners of my eyes. Not because she wanted to stay away from her son, but because she now saw as a threat.
"I-I’m sorry," I whispered in a hoarse voice.
"You already have soone in your life, and he’s getting married. I just...don’t want my son to get involved with you again. I hope you don’t take this personally, Kyra. I’m just protecting my son... and also you. You know you’re important to , right? I just don’t want other people to think there’s sothing going on between you and my son—"
This wasn’t concern—this was an Alpha mother protecting her pup.
"I don’t have any intention of ruining your son’s life, Luna Marlene," I said after gathering my courage. "Yes, you’re right! I already have soone in my life. I already have soone to protect. I didn’t co back to ruin your son’s life..."
I gave her a smile, even though it hurt so much. Had she only treated well before because I was married to her son? Did she genuinely care for , or was it all just for show? I couldn’t believe I was being betrayed again.
She slowly nodded as if she was relieved. "Thank you for understanding, Kyra. I really—"
"I need to leave now, Luna Marlene," I cut her off, though I didn’t an to be disrespectful. I smiled awkwardly and grabbed my bag. "I have things to do. I’m currently building my own business. So..."
She smiled a little. "Good luck with your business."
I nodded and turned my back. As soon as I did, tears rolled down my cheeks. I quickly wiped them away before I started walking. Why did I even think she wanted to see because she missed ? Hopelessly pathetic!
I was lost in thought when I rode the taxi. My conversation with Luna Marlene bothered deeply, and it brought back the pain from the past. I never wanted to be angry with her, but I was starting to dislike her now. I felt like her treatnt of before was fake, and I was so stupid for not seeing it.
Shock washed over when I realized where my feet had taken . My lips parted as I slowly sat on the wooden bench just in front of the lake where I used to visit with Nathan every sumr. The mories made my heart ache even more. I couldn’t help but bla Nathan for all the pain I had felt, and still felt, until now.
Then the minty scent hit .
"Kyra..."
My heart raced as that familiar voice filled my ears. I panicked and pulled myself up. A familiar man stood behind with a shocked look on his face. His face alone was enough to reopen the wounds I’d been trying to heal. Nathan... his wolf Alaric’s pain mirrored my own in his eyes.
Sylvia snarled as I tried to flee, but his hand caught my wrist to stop , making even sadder and angrier.
