After a long and silent drive, they finally arrived at the office complex, though calling it an "office" was the wrong word to call it. The place looked more like a fortress or a paranoid dictator's palace, built with so many layers of security that even a nuclear bomb would struggle to erase it.
A tall iron fence surrounded the entire area, covered with caras at every corner. Multiple roadblocks stood in the way, guarded by agents looking like private military wearing full gear with night vision goggles and even on the rooftop were figures walking around. Not even ntioning the armored military vehicles parked at the gates.
It didn't look like the headquarters of an agency ant to protect civilians and the holand, it looked more like a military base preparing for war.
To be fair, they really were preparing for war all because of sothing Benjamin had done. It wasn't sothing he didn't ntion to Hector… well, he had activated what the agency called "Code Red."
Every departnt, every division, and every agent inside the NSBI went into full lockdown. Every agent was recalled from off-duty, armored vehicles rolled out from the underground garage, basically, a full-scale ergency protocol that put everyone on the highest alert.
And the reason why he did it was simple. First, Linda allowed it to be done. And second, with the "Code Red" Benjamin formally beca the supre leader of the agency, which ant every single division and every single departnt was now listening only to his orders and no one else's.
In this way, he could oversee everything with the people he trusted… but on the other hand it scared Sophia and his n even more.
"What should I do now?" The driver asked, as he didn't have the will and the nerve to, well… just drive up to the gate where those people could shoot the shit out of the car even if it was bulletproof, so he just parked down on the side.
"I an… they are waiting for us, at least that's what the director said." Sophia said, though she wasn't even sure about it, as her voice was kind of stuttering and full of hesitation as she leaned forward looking out.
But she, too, had everything in her except the will to just go straight into that reinforced shit when they could be gunned down in a second. Not just that, but the first ti she truly felt kind of stunned by the whole sight of it.
The first ti seeing it like this, close, and personally feeling the weight of it.
The amount of weaponry and the security periter that were there just showed how capable the NSBI is and was… showed that they could easily wipe Sophia and his family out, if, in the back of the ti, it had worked how they were supposed to.
Yeah, if the NBSI were intact, not fully corrupt and working for the higher-ups and their own benefit, then they could have fucking wiped all of them out in a day… well, that never happened, nor is it going to happen, but just thinking about it caused goosebumps all over her body.
"So we just walk in like nothing ever happened?" the driver asked again. "Like there are caras everywhere."
"Yeah, but what should I do?" She asked now, kind of flustered by the fact that it just felt like a fucking joke.
"Put this on maybe…?" the man said from the passenger side as he held out a… mask.
She imdiately laughed at the absurdity of it. "You really think walking in with a mask on would be a good idea?" She laughed more as she just thought through it… it was the dumbest thing she'd heard so far.
"Maybe we're stressing too much on it." The driver said again as he looked back at her. "Like, if we think about it straight, it's bad for them to… like what would happen if it ca out that you just walked in with the biggest ease? It would cause chaos out there, so this whole situation is worse for both parties."
"That's true." The other man agreed. "Like, this is a situation that both us and them could use against each other… which also ans it's a draw? Like, if we speak, they kill all of us, if they speak, the whole country's going to be in outrage… so I think we're overcomplicating this whole thing by judging them by the past."
"Exactly." The driver continued, still looking at Sophia. "As you said, Jas knows them, which ans they can do nothing against us, and we can do nothing against them… it's the perfect situation we can be in."
"True." Sophia said simply. "Then if sothing happens, I'll be the first to throw you two in front of them." She smiled, but it was more like a frustrated smile than anything else. "Drive up to the gate and let's see what happens."
Well, they said nothing back… more like they realized they'd spoken too much on the matter, but at least they'd all cald down a little, so the driver started up the car once again and, with that, drove toward the gate… but for so reason, he chose one of the worst ones possible.
Like, if you're stressed about the situation and think you might die, the instinctive thing to do is to choose the path with less security, the one that gives you a tiny window to escape if sothing goes wrong. That's what any rational, self-preserving person would do… yeah a very basic human instinct.
But no, from the three choices in front of him, for so kind of reason, he chose the gate on the very left side, guarded by an armored military vehicle with a machine gun on top, two other blacked-out SUVs blocking the gate itself, and, of course, guards with rifles in their hands and dogs by their sides.
Maybe he thought that if sothing happened, it'd be better to die fast than slowly bleed away…
