After that handshake with Damien, Jas said goodbye and with Darvik they left and once again he ate nothing in the end.
"Is there any ice cream shop nearby?" Jas asked as he looked at Darvik, who for a mont got a bit surprised by the fact of what he just asked for.
"Yeah, there is one on the corner." He answered and pointed his finger straight at the shop. "Can I join you?"
"Of course." Jas answered him, though he wanted to be alone and not with sobody who is the… well, who knows what of Maraci, the fucking shadow governnt leader or so shit.
But with that, they just walked there slowly, and it was a good mont to enjoy it, the sun setting, the weather not too warm but just right, the green all over the place, the street sll. The only problem was the huge entourage following them, at least it was a problem in Jas's mind.
The whole concept of him walking freely in the city was strange. Even stranger was that nobody looked at them. So even said hi, but no pictures, no nothing.
"Do people get comfortable with this?" Jas asked as they stopped at a crosswalk.
"Mostly. You know, it's not said out loud who you are or who the others are. We refer to them as businessn, foreign investors." He giggled. "But of course everybody knows that sothing is up, and that's why there were a lot of concerns from people, but in the end the only thing they need to do is just look past it."
"I think that is impossible." Jas answered. "Ordinary civilians mostly just can't take this, killers walking through them."
The one thing he couldn't find an answer to. All these civilians just accept the fact that literal murderers walk among them. People who end so many lives with their drugs, push so many people into addiction and destroy families, so supply wars, so killed hundreds… and they just let it be. Even if it's all for money, for their good, for the economy and so on… it just seems impossible that everybody accepts it.
"You're forgetting one thing… we were at war, the whole country." Darvik continued, but this ti his voice was lower, more careful. "So many people died, but that suffering was the thing that bonded all of us together. From rich to the poorest, we fought together, even the criminals. We all fought together against that system, and in the end, when we finally won… there were two options for us."
"And what were those two options?" Jas asked, but it was so strange to him that he never really heard about the war in Maraci, never even heard about it in the news, in the television, or just people talking about it.
"First, it was to ask for help, but then we would have beco a colony. We would have had billions in debt, we would have sold all of our mines and resources, and if we had done that, then why would we have even fought for our freedom? To beco slaves again?" His eyes literally said it all, Jas saw that he wasn't lying but it was the reality. "No. We chose what chaos had to offer us." He finished as he opened the door of the ice cream shop, letting Jas in first.
"Welco!" The lady said it with a warm smile behind the counter which was a complete contrast to the story Darvik had just told.
"Uhm, I would like… two scoop salted caral."Jas said this as he eyed it, and the mories imdiately ca flooding back to the day he was with Charlotte… when he lost Hans and Rafael. "What do you want? I'll pay for it." He looked at Darvik, who for so reason got surprised by the kindness of Jas.
"Oh, then I would like one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of vanilla with so candy sprinkles on the top." He said like a kid would say.
"Classic, huh?" Jas said with a smile.
"Salted caral is more classic in my opinion, like an old man."
"Yeah maybe." Jas said, but then he looked behind at the big entourage… literally everybody got into the ice scream shop… so he felt the pressure on him. "If anybody wants so, ask for it and I'll pay." He said, but maybe that was the worst decision so far in Maraci.
There were only two people who didn't want ice cream… but the other eighteen, including Mike himself, ordered ice cream… candy sprinkles, three scoops, four scoops, chocolate on top, waffle cone, they went all out with it while Darvik just laughed at it, seeing Jas's face when the final price was four fucking hundred dollars, and even the whole scene was strange.
The people who are supposed to protect them are licking ice cream, so in military uniforms, so in suits… just enjoying it like kids.
Though for Jas it was strange… Darvik didn't even finish his story and from the look of it he totally forgot about it.
He is definitely a strange man… Jas thought as Darvik was biting the ice cream like it was an ice pop.
"So what did chaos offer?"
"Ohh, I did finish the story." He laughed as he wiped his mouth with a napkin… it was just surreal how quickly he switched back to that serious look. "So after every war, there is chaos, especially in a country where the whole governnt vanished. There were no rules or anything else, so cri started to rise, and that's when the whole Maraci 'terrible justice system' was born." He shook his head with a smile. "Just think about it, people suffered in war, and then motherfuckers started robbing and killing others? We all suffered the sa, and they still decided to fuck over others… so there wasn't any rcy killing them. Though the biggest blessing in the chaos was that many drug lords realized they could ship so called humanitarian aid that was actually drugs, and then smuggle it to other countries, and that was our business opportunity."
"So this whole gangster economy started with trading drugs with humanitarian aid?" Jas asked, because it seed to… be la. He thought it would be a much bigger story, sothing more genius.
"Yeah. Then it doubled up, tripled up, hundreds of millions followed through us, then we took the cut, and nobody said a word about it. We needed money, we didn't want to beco slaves or have debts, so as more and more drug lords chose us, suddenly we made billions per month. Our economy started to rise a bit, and we could rebuild the country's infrastructure and so on," he said as he once again took a bite of the ice cream. "And you know, once you make a connection, the rest will co."
"You an you or the governnt rebuilt the country with blood money, and then foreign investors ca in? I an real investors."
"Exactly. You know, coming from a war-torn country where people once starved, becoming a nation standing on its own in just fifteen years is almost impossible to even imagine… yet we did." He fished and took the last bite of the waffle cone."So, what did you think of the story?"
"Sounds unbelievable, but I know it's deeper than that… so can I ask you another question?"
"Please."
"Who are you?"
It was a simple question… a question that Darvik had heard many tis… but it was different. It was a question that silenced him, because the intent behind the question was different.
The way Jas asked it, the way Jas looked into his eyes… what he wanted to know was the darkness surrounding Darvik… his own darkness, his own abyss.
