The police released a list of the deceased. Among the names was Xu Xin, the entrustor.

In other words, she was now legally dead—and not just dead, but one of those whose body had never even been recovered. For all anyone knew, she’d been murdered and tossed into the sea to feed the fish.

In the eyes of the law, Ning Shu was now a non-entity.

She gave a derisive laugh.

“Mom, you should go and collect the pensation,” Ning Shu said to Mother Xu. “Since it’s available, might as well take it.”

Mother Xu shook her head repeatedly. “I won’t. I don’t want SR Conglomerate’s dirty money.”

Ning Shu: …

“Just go and get it. It’s twenty million in total—split between all the families, that’s still over a million per household. You really don’t want it?”

With that money, Mother Xu could afford to have surgery.

This was clearly Gong Rong’s move to pacify the victims’ families.

Ultimately, it was all a game of money.

Most likely, it was also meant as a lesson for his younger sister: ‘Money can achieve a lot—you need to learn how to use it to get what you want.’

Twenty million meant nothing to SR Conglomerate. For it, that amount was a mere drop in the ocean. However, it could buy off this many lives.

Ning Shu looked at Gong Rong’s somber and sincere expression on the television screen. Who would suspect that he was the true culprit?

Yet the doctor couldn’t deny what he’d done. Had he killed people? Yes.

As for how many he killed, it’d be however many they decide to say he killed.

It was quite cruel.

If she hadn’t escaped back then, the one being reviled right now would be her.

What Ning Shu really cared about, though, was her identity. She was now officially without an identity. She had been declared dead.

Gong Rong had listed her among the dead to stop her from causing further trouble.

If her involvement in the kidnapping came to light, then what had happened on the island would be exposed as well.

Of course, the media weren’t fools. It didn’t take long for them to link the Xu Xin on the death list with the earlier ‘kidnapper Xu Xin.’

But the police issued a public clarification: they were not the same person.

Xu Xin had already been killed by the doctor on the island.

Even so, there were too many inconsistencies—details that didn’t quite add up.

However, no one dared continue reporting on it.

Freedom of speech or not, when it came to the media, the authorities still kept a tight grip.

Before long, amid an uproar of public outrage, the doctor’s sentence was announced. Because of the severity of the crimes, and under intense pressure from both the victims’ families and society at large, he was sentenced to death.

At that point, no matter what the doctor said, it was already too late. There was no room to appeal or delay.

He was swiftly executed by firing squad. And just like that, the case was closed.

Ning Shu thought to herself: Gong Rong was probably sipping red wine and smiling right now.

Her heart felt like it had been plunged into ice. The power of money really was terrifying.

It was a kind of power too.

It was different from physical force, but just as capable of making people submit, of inciting greed.

Because, in a way, money was the basis for survival.

Mother Xu eventually did go to collect the pensation. When she came home, her eyes were glazed over. How could she not be? That much money had suddenly fallen out of the sky.

But the moment she thought about what her daughter had been through, Mother Xu’s eyes filled with tears. She had been so close to ending up being murdered or being made into a deranged killer.

Looking at the well-dressed people working at SR Conglomerate, she couldn’t help but feel a chill run through her. A cold dread seeped into her bones.

Ning Shu, on the other hand, didn’t care. With the money, they could finally afford the operation.

“I’m just worried about my identity,” she said to Mother Xu. “I’m legally dead now.”

Mother Xu thought for a moment. “Why don’t you use your younger sister’s name, then?”
