Ning Shu was stunned. “I have a younger sister?”

“She died before she was even a year old,” Mother Xu said with a sigh. “She had cerebral palsy.”

“Xu Chen,” she added. “I’ll take you to get an ID made. Your sister had cerebral palsy so was a little slow. From now on, you’ll live as Xu Chen.”

“But no one knows I had a sister,” Ning Shu said while looking at Mother Xu.

“Just say you grew up in the countryside.”

Ning Shu gave Mother Xu a thumbs-up. One way or another, the first priority was sorting out her legal identity.

She still couldn’t figure out what Gong Rong was thinking, listing her among the dead. Perhaps he thought it would be easier to deal with a ‘corpse.’

She was the only one who had managed to escape the island—well, no, there was also that tanned girl.

But the girl didn’t seem to know much. She had been in a daze the whole time. If she had any sense, she’d keep her mouth shut.

Ning Shu didn’t know whether Gong Rong had sent someone to deal with the girl too.

Mother Xu took her to apply for the new ID.

Ning Shu had to pretend to have cerebral palsy—she kept her head tilted as she walked with a limp, due to her supposedly underdeveloped muscles, all while drooling uncontrollably.

To make sure she had enough saliva, she even ate sour tangerines beforehand. The tang made her cheeks ache.

Fortunately, her sister’s household registration was still active.

Ning Shu stared blankly into the camera.

She felt wretched. ID photos were already notoriously bad—and now she had to look intellectually disabled on top of that. She couldn’t even imagine what kind of disaster the final photo would be.

As soon as the photo was taken, she gave up the act entirely.

The police who had been posted at their front door had now left, and Ning Shu and Mother Xu could finally return home.

But even without the police, there were still unwele visitors.

It was the entrustor’s relatives.

Ning Shu saw a family of three standing outside the door.

Her biological father, his new wife, and their son.

When Mother Xu saw her ex-husband, her expression darkened. “What are you doing here?”

Father Xu looked startled the moment he saw Ning Shu. “You’re not dead?”

Ning Shu replied coolly, “Did you want me to be?”

He looked awkward as he avoided her gaze like a guilty man with something to hide.

The woman beside him, however—his current wife—smiled sweetly and said, “Xinxin, it’s so good you’re safe. Your father was so worried about you.”

Ning Shu’s expression was frosty. “Oh. Thanks.”

“What are you doing here?” Mother Xu said coldly.

“What’s wrong with me ing to see my daughter?” Father Xu said quickly.

Ning Shu didn’t need long to figure out what the couple was really here for.

They’d probably seen the news on TV and realized that Mother Xu had received hundreds of thousands—maybe even over a million yuan—in pensation.

Like flies drawn to blood, they’d e swarming in.

You had to admit, the lure of money was powerful. Sometimes, even blood ties couldn’t stand up to it.

Greed had magnified their basest instincts.

Back when Xu Xin had gone to ask her father for help with her mother’s medical bills, he hadn’t given her a single penny. And now he was here—clearly after money.

Ning Shu cast a glance at his wife. She was almost certainly the one behind this visit.

Li Shan shivered involuntarily under Ning Shu’s gaze, and her smile faltered. While clutching her son’s hand, she said, “Chengcheng, go on, greet your big sister.”

The boy, who was about seven or eight years old, blurted out, “She’s not my sister.”

Ning Shu didn’t react in the slightest. She saw no reason to be upset over a stranger.

“Mm. Just as well. I don’t think you’re my little brother either. My mom only ever gave birth to two daughters—me and my younger sister. She’s never given me a younger brother.”

Li Shan’s expression turned awkward, but she forced a smile and apologized to Ning Shu.

Someone would only endure something like this if they wanted something.

Li Shan touched her husband’s back with her hand and tugged on the corner of his coat.
