The words Alice Turner had just said were intentionally ant for Sophia Wood to hear. She hadn’t expected Sophia on the other end of the phone to catch her drift, but this was precisely the result she had hoped for the most.
"We’re not the sa as before. There has been so developnt between us." She didn’t directly state anything, but instead used this to test her mom’s reaction.
"That’s good news, you two spending ti together will only get better and better." Sophia clearly misinterpreted Alice’s words, hearing there had been developnts between her and Benjamin Shaw, she naively assud it was sothing positive, without considering any other possibilities.
Just monts ago, Alice was happy that Sophia Wood understood her, but now hearing her mom say this, her mood shifted. Wasn’t her aning obvious? How could her mom think like that?
"Mom! What makes you think we’ll get better?" How could things possibly improve with that man? They had already agreed to divorce; if it weren’t for her injured hand causing a delay, they would have been divorced yesterday.
"What? Could it be that you two..." Sophia didn’t finish her sentence; she didn’t dare voice her speculation, fearing the embarrassnt if she got it wrong.
But Alice wasn’t as hesitant. She took up Sophia’s words and made things clear, "Yes, not only have we not progressed positively, but we have also headed down a worse path. We’re preparing to get a divorce."
Finally saying it out loud brought her a sense of relief.
"What?! You two are preparing for a divorce?" Sophia had thought things weren’t going well between Benjamin and Alice, but she never expected things to reach the point of divorce. She was genuinely surprised and worried.
Now that everything was out in the open, Alice figured there was no need to hide anything further and decided to spill everything at once, "The divorce is happening in the next couple of days."
They had already been to the Civil Affairs Bureau once yesterday, but unfortunately, they couldn’t finalize it. She planned to discuss with that man later to see when he’d be available in the next couple of days to complete the process.
"You two..."
Sophia didn’t know what to say anymore. Their impending divorce had already shocked her, but the speed at which it was happening was even more surprising to her.
Anticipating Sophia’s reaction, Alice was actually more worried about her dad’s response and attitude.
"Mom! Please don’t tell Dad about the divorce with Benjamin just yet. Wait until after we’ve completed the divorce procedures to inform him." By then, even if her dad opposed and got angry, it would be too late. The divorce would already be finalized; she wanted to act first and report later, otherwise handling it upfront would definitely complicate things.
"Your dad won’t approve of your divorce with Benjamin, Alice! Maybe you should reconsider? You and Benj..."
"Mom! It’s really impossible between us. I’ll be honest with you; in this more than half a year of marriage, we haven’t even been living together." Sophia wanted to advise Alice to reconsider, but before she could finish, Alice interrupted her.
