Jack shrugged. His involvent wasn't entirely driven by a sense of justice; he also had so speculations he wanted to verify, such as the practical combat capabilities of his abilities in a forest environnt, whether performing similar actions outside his jurisdiction could increase experience, and satisfying a bit of curiosity.
He didn't believe in the saying "with great power, cos great responsibility," but without the jump scares from horror movies at crucial monts, he felt much bolder, especially with a beautiful girl beside him to feast his eyes on — a girl with striking looks and a great figure.
[A/n: I think i will freaking write a chapter full of swearing if I continue to edit this.]
Nevertheless, he revealed his police identity and showed Jessie the badge in his wallet, which slightly eased the girl's anxiety.
On the way back, Jack floored the accelerator, but the old, dilapidated tow truck couldn't pick up speed at all. With Jessie looking anxious, the two arrived at the accident site in about the sa ti as before.
"Carly! Scott!"
Jessie jumped out of the car before it had even co to a complete stop, staggering to the roadside and frantically shouting at the overturned SUV on the hillside.
"Francine! Evan!"
There was still no response, only the rustling of leaves in the trees and the chirping of unknown insects.
Jessie was already crying, her cries filled with fear and unease.
Jack, his hand on the gun under his arm, could sense soone secretly watching them, but there was no strong malice, just a mystery why they weren't coming out.
Seeing Jack standing motionless, Jessie didn't dare jump off the embanknt alone, her cries growing increasingly desperate, her emotions nearing collapse.
This girl didn't seem like one of those characters in Arican horror movies who loved to commit suicide in elaborate ways; was she perhaps the female lead?
As Jack was thinking this, he moved to take her down to see what was happening, when a man was kicked out of the tree in a disheveled state. Then, a girl nad Carly, wearing a blue tank top and with her hair in a ponytail, also erged.
"Scott, I told you this wasn't funny at all," she complained, running to Jessie and offering her so inexplicable comfort.
"Honey, what's wrong? That idiot Scott was just trying to play a joke on you guys."
Jessie sobbed, recounting the terrifying scene she had just witnessed. Carly was pale with fright, and even her sowhat carefree boyfriend, Scott, was terrified.
"You two aren't trying to scare us, are you? That's impossible."
Jack, too lazy to waste words, pointed to the trailer behind him and said coldly, "Believe it or not, it's up to you. We'll see once we get back in the trailer. Don't waste ti here. You have two companions. We have to get out of here imdiately."
Scott stamred, "Evan and Francine went to find water. They said they heard the sound of flowing water nearby and wanted to…"
Before he could finish, a strange cry suddenly rang out in the distance. The birds in the forest were startled and flew away, emitting various strange cries, circling in the air above the trees.
"What was that sound?" Jessie instinctively took a step closer to Jack and grabbed his arm.
Jack shook his head. "I don't know."
There were too many animal cries in the wild; this sound didn't seem like a human.
The group exchanged glances, terrified after learning that cannibals were lurking nearby.
"I'm going to find them. You guys get in the car, keep the engine running, and keep an eye on your surroundings. If you don't see before dark, head straight for the highway and ask a passing truck for help; they usually have radios on them."
Seeing all the three of them being in a daze. He could only shout so sense into them.
Scott seed to have left his body, staring blankly at Jack, completely unresponsive.
"Hey, act like a man!" Jack grabbed him by the collar and yelled in his ear.
"Ah, I understand, I got it." Scott was jolted awake by the shout and nodded repeatedly.
Jack didn't let him off the hook, but continued to yell in his ear, "Repeat what I just said."
"Uh, start the car, keep an eye out, if you don't see before dark, go straight to the highway and ask for a radio for help."
Slap!
Scott slapped himself to jolt himself awake, "Ask the truck driver for a radio for help."
Not bad, not a complete liability. Jack breathed a sigh of relief and turned to go down into the woods to look for them, but felt a small hand gripping his arm tightly.
"Hmm?"
Jack looked up and t a pair of dark eyes. Jessie was looking at him with a determined gaze.
"I'll go with you. Francine and Evan are my friends. I can't leave them behind."
Jack didn't care. He was confident he could protect soone, as long as she didn't do anything reckless. He didn't expect this girl, who seed timid, to be so loyal in tis of crisis.
"Jessie, no." Carly, seeing her best friend about to take a risk, pushed her boyfriend beside her in exasperation.
"Ah, I'll go. I've run marathons, I'm fast." Although Scott spoke hesitantly, he still stepped forward resolutely under his girlfriend's "encouragent," which impressed Jack.
"No need, Jack is a policeman, he'll be there. Besides, everyone got into this ss because they were trying to cheer up. You two are getting engaged, Scott, you need to protect Carly."
Jack rubbed his forehead, feeling a bit of a headache. He could only helplessly pat his holster.
"It's okay, let Jessie go with them. It's more dangerous to leave two girls here."
So everyone stopped arguing. Jack first took them to get so food and drinks from the SUV, then picked up two thick sticks for self-defense, repeatedly reminding them of so precautions:
1. Absolutely do not run around.
2. Do not stand in conspicuous places.
3. The car must not be turned off. Be vigilant when you see strangers. If you find sothing wrong, even if you hit soone, keep driving forward. Do not get out of the car to check.
The four then separated.
Although a lot had happened, only a little over an hour had passed. It was not yet 2 PM. Jack took Jessie's hand, and the two entered the woods.
Following the direction Scott pointed out, the two carefully moved forward. This wild forest was rarely visited by people, and there were almost no decent paths, making it very difficult to walk.
Jack discovered a small drawback of his ntal power: his overly acute senses made him very uncomfortable in this jungle.
The surrounding environntal interference was too strong. There were birds, insects, and various small movents caused by animals everywhere, making him overly sensitive. Sotis, even the sudden flapping of wings and flight of a beetle would make him reflexively turn his head.
