Subsequently, Jack was designated by Zoe to be Hannah's partner, shocking the entire police station. Everyone knew about Hannah's crush on him, and everyone was curious why Jack was the exception. So unscrupulous people even secretly spread rumors that Jack was a gigolo.
Jack didn't care about these rumors; he was troubled by Zoe avoiding him. After that night at the hospital, Zoe treated him like air in public and made up excuses to avoid contacting him privately, as if she had done sothing to wrong him.
In desperation, one day, Jack finally called Maureen and asked her to et him the next night.
"So you're not making dinner or accompanying to training tomorrow night just to see your glamorous psychiatrist?" Hannah, driving the police car, spoke like a jealous, pampered wife.
"Didn't Zoe say the cause of your shooting aftereffects has been found? As long as it happens afterward..."
Jack's gaze lingered on the girl's profile. "So Zoe didn't hide anything from you, right? She told you everything."
Hannah, realizing she'd let sothing slip, stamred, a blush spreading from her ears to her cheeks, and finally even her neck turned red. "I don't know anything. Go ask that psychiatrist; she's the mastermind."
"The mastermind? You three have been plotting behind my back? Hannah, watch out!" Jack caught a glimpse of a figure suddenly appearing in front of the police car and quickly shouted a warning.
Hannah, snapping out of her daze, slamd on the brakes, but the incident happened so suddenly that even though the patrol car wasn't going fast, it still made a dull thud. The two rushed out to check and found a blonde girl wearing an oversized n's T-shirt lying unconscious on the ground.
Hannah crouched down to examine the girl's forehead injury, while Jack, noticing sothing amiss, spotted a half-open pair of handcuffs on the girl's left wrist. Underneath her oversized n's T-shirt, she wore only underwear, and most importantly, she was barefoot, with small cuts on the soles of her feet from running so frantically.
Signaling to Hannah to pay attention to these details, Jack picked up the walkie-talkie and called: "Patrol car 7-A-26 reporting a pedestrian collision. Please send an ambulance."
While waiting for the ambulance, the girl regained consciousness, grabbing Hannah's arm and crying, "Save Emma! Please save Emma! She won't last much longer!"
Hannah tried to calm her, saying, "We're police. You're safe now. Tell us what happened. Who is Emma?"
"I've been kidnapped! Emma is the girl with ! Please save her! He'll kill her if he finds out I ran away!" The girl remained agitated, and Jack's brow furrowed.
"What's your na? Do you rember where you ran from?"
"My na is Kara Robinson. I don't know this area. I've been running for about half an hour, and nobody was willing to help . I could only run for my life. That man has guns, several guns. I'm too scared to fight back. Every ti I disobey him, he hits Emma. Please help her. If he finds out I've run away, he'll really kill Emma."
After putting the girl into the ambulance that arrived shortly after, Jack and Hannah drove their police car to the central hospital. At the hospital, they ran into John's old classmate, Dr. Carrie, who turned out to be the head of the ergency departnt at the central hospital.
"The patient suffered a head injury with a mild concussion, and minor abrasions on her hands and feet. Apart from being a little emotionally unstable, she's in good condition," Carrie told them after a brief greeting.
"So, can we take a quick statent from her? It won't take long. We suspect she's been kidnapped. Have you done a sexual assault examination on her?" Hannah asked anxiously.
Carrie shook her head: "The examination requires her guardian's consent. We have already notified her family, and they are on their way. Before that, you can have a brief chat with her."
Entering the ward, Jack saw a girl nad Kara lying on the bed, her forehead wrapped in gauze. She had thick blonde hair, a delicate nose beneath large blue eyes, and slightly parted cherry lips revealing clean, even teeth — clearly a pretty girl from an upper-middle-class white family.
Given her situation, Jack didn't speak, allowing Hannah to lead the questioning.
"Hello, Kara, I'm Officer Hannah, and this is my partner, Jack," Hannah said with a smile, shaking the girl's hand, her tone gentle and soothing.
Kara's emotions had cald considerably; although a hint of panic remained in her eyes, her speech was now clear and organized: "My kidnapper was a middle-aged white man, very strong. About two weeks ago, he held at gunpoint in front of my friend's house. There was no one around. He forced to crawl into a large plastic box in the back seat of his car."
The girl spoke quickly, and Jack took notes in his notebook.
"He took to the basent of his house, where there was another African Arican girl, Emma, who had also been abducted."
"He told us that if either of us tried to escape, we would both be killed."
"He always carried a gun, and Emma and I didn't dare to resist. During the day, he made do the cleaning and laundry."
