She looked at him.

He looked at her.

The system on the windowsill was entirely still and entirely silent.

"I don’t know the steps," she said again. "But I know this is the direction."

"Yes," he said.

"So we figure out the steps," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"Together," she said.

He looked at her.

Sothing moved through his expression — the warm thing, the real one, and underneath it sothing larger and quieter that had been living in him for a long ti and was being allowed, finally, to be exactly what it was.

"Together," he said.

She looked at him for a mont.

Then she reached across and picked up the working list.

Turned it over.

On the back, beside the line that said ’tell him you want him here’ — which now said ’Three days. Two if the road is clear.’ — she wrote:

’He is here.’

Set the pen down.

Looked at what she’d written.

Turned it back over.

Put it on the corner of the table where it lived.

The working list had twenty items.

The river moved outside the window.

The city continued its evening.

She was at a table in a dining room above a rchant district office in a capital city that was in the process of having its governance frawork rebuilt from the foundations up, and the person she had sent a relay to three days ago was sitting beside her, and the system was satisfied on the windowsill, and the list was in the corner where it belonged.

Mahir reached across and took the pen she had set down.

She looked at him.

He turned the working list over.

Looked at the back.

At ’tell him you want him here.’

At ’Three days. Two if the road is clear.’

At ’He is here.’

Below that, in his own handwriting — clear and precise, the specific script she had learned from three months of operational docunts and a year of relay reports — he wrote:

’And staying.’

She looked at what he had written.

At the two words that had no completion criterion and no dependency and no tiline.

Just — and staying.

She looked at him.

He was watching her with those steady dark eyes that had been watching her since the first morning in the palace when he had stood at attention in a courtyard and had not looked like a weapon in a rack the way the others had, but like a person who had decided sothing and was waiting to see if the decision was going to matter.

It had mattered.

It had been mattering for fourteen months.

She picked up the working list.

Put it in her inner pocket.

With the honest lines. With the margin notes. With the papers that had accumulated across a year of building sothing that was hers.

The list was in her pocket.

He was beside her.

The system on the windowsill made no sound at all.

Which was its way of saying sothing that it had decided, for once, did not need words.

She understood.

She sat at the table in the dining room with the river outside and the working list in her pocket and Mahir beside her saying nothing because they had both said what needed to be said and the rest was just — this.

The evening continuing.

The direction known.

The steps whatever they were.

Both of them here.

That was enough.

That was, she had learned across two lifetis and fourteen months and a working list that was never going to reach zero, more than enough.

That was everything.

.

.

The lower city in the early morning had a different quality than the rchant district.

Older. The streets narrower, the buildings closer together, the specific density of a part of a city that had been built before anyone thought about planning and had been building on itself ever since. The river was closer here — you could hear it constantly, not the distant sound from the rchant district windows but the imdiate working sound of boats and current and the specific sll of water over stone.

Ken had found her in three days.

He had a way of finding people — she had observed this in the palace and had not been surprised to see it confird in the city. He didn’t ask questions loudly. He didn’t move through spaces like soone looking for sothing. He simply went to the places that made sense and waited until the information arranged itself into a picture.

The record clerk’s na was Tessa.

She lived in a room above a laundry in the river district. She had been working at the laundry for eleven months — the owner had hired her the week after the incursion without asking many questions because she was capable and quiet and showed up when she was supposed to.

Ken had all of this.

He had not contacted her.

Elara had been thinking about Tessa for three days.

About a woman who had seen sothing she wasn’t supposed to see, who had spent months in a palace watching records being reorganized before they were sealed, who had told the eighth appointnt the incursion tiline fourteen minutes early and had then left through the physician’s corridor and had been living above a laundry for a year.

Who had been the fourth consort’s source.

Who had, in the specific way of people who acted correctly when it was dangerous to act correctly, done the right thing three separate tis in a period when doing the right thing had no safe outco.

She had been carrying it alone.

For a year.

’You know what you want to do,’ the system said. On her shoulder. In the rchant district office at the fifth bell of the morning while everyone else was still asleep.

"Yes," she said.

’You’ve known for three days,’ it said.

"Yes," she said.

’What’s been stopping you,’ it said.

She thought about it honestly.

"I’ve been thinking about whether it’s the right approach," she said. "Whether going to her personally is the correct move or whether it creates a dynamic that complicates the subsequent operational relationship."

’And,’ the system said.

"And," she said, "I’ve been aware that the thinking-about-whether-it’s-correct is partly genuine and partly a way of not doing sothing I don’t have a clean thodology for."

’What don’t you have a thodology for,’ the system said.

She looked at the working list.

Item fourteen. Guard structure review. The note that said ’second contact identified as possible. Approach eighth appointnt at week two.’

Tessa wasn’t on the working list.

She had not added her.

"She’s not a list item," Elara said. "She’s a person who’s been alone for a year and who did sothing that required significant personal courage and who hasn’t had anyone acknowledge that." She paused. "I don’t know how to approach that as an operational matter because it isn’t one."

The system was quiet.

’So approach it as sothing else,’ it said.

"I don’t have the thodology," she said again.

’Yes you do,’ the system said. ’You’ve been developing it for fourteen months. You just don’t recognize it as a thodology because it doesn’t look like a list.’

She looked at the window.

At the morning light coming up over the rchant district.

At the working list.

Then she stood.

Put on her coat.

Adjusted the butterfly pin.
