"I’m alive. You’re not too late." Jie Jingchen struggled to get up, clutching his back with a pained expression. He still found the presence of mind to tell Jie Jingjue, "Quick, go check on your fourth sister-in-law. I don’t know how badly she’s hurt."
When Qin i saw Jie Jingchen get up, she was about to climb to her feet as well. But hearing his words, she imdiately lay back down. To play along, she clutched her stomach and let out a pained cry. "Agh! My stomach, it hurts so much! Jie Jingchen, am I having a miscarriage?"
She was no actress, but she wasn’t about to sabotage Jie Jingchen’s act.
"Fourth Sister-in-law!" Hearing the word "miscarriage," Jie Jingjue was terrified. He hadn’t been there, so he didn’t know what had happened. But the stone table was overturned and the ground was in shambles—there had clearly been a fight.
The corner of Jie Jingchen’s mouth twitched. ’A miscarriage? Only that little head of hers could co up with sothing like that.’
Father Xu, Xu Chunyan, and Jie Jingwei were dumbfounded.
"What’s going on here?" one of the police officers asked.
"A misunderstanding! It’s all a misunderstanding, Officer! We’re family, just ssing around. We’re sorry to have troubled you." Xu Chunyan quickly recovered, forcing a smile.
The officer pointed to the overturned stone table and the wreckage on the ground. "This is a misunderstanding? This is ’ssing around’?"
"Uh..." Xu Chunyan surreptitiously tugged on Jie Jingwei’s sleeve, motioning for him to say sothing.
"Officer..." Jie Jingwei had just begun to speak when Qin i cut him off.
"Agh! Jie Jingchen, my stomach hurts!" Qin i howled, clutching her stomach. But her tearless cries weren’t convincing. Try as she might, she couldn’t squeeze out a single drop. Steeling herself, she gave her thigh a vicious pinch. The sharp pain finally forced tears into her eyes.
"Fourth Sister-in-law, you—" Jie Jingjue cried out in alarm, his gaze fixed on the space between Qin i’s legs. Deep worry clouded his handso face, and his voice trembled. "Fourth Brother, she’s... she’s really having a miscarriage."
Qin i froze. Through her tear-filled eyes, she followed Jie Jingjue’s gaze downward. For a mont, she was completely stunned.
’Could the timing be any more perfect?’
This wasn’t a miscarriage at all—her period had just started.
The bloodstain was especially obvious on the white pants she was wearing, and for a spectacular mont, she completely forgot to react.
Jie Jingchen reacted in a flash. He took off his jacket, wrapped it around Qin i, scooped her into his arms, and strode toward the exit.
Qin i buried her face in his arms, embarrassed. Her cheeks were flushed red as she whispered, "Jie Jingchen, it’s not a miscarriage."
"I know," Jie Jingchen said with a knowing smile.
Qin i paused. ’I’d almost rather you didn’t know.’ She snuggled against his chest. "Now what?"
"You’re having a miscarriage. We’re going to the hospital," Jie Jingchen declared, intentionally raising his voice.
"Fourth Brother, Fourth Sister-in-law, I’ll go with you," Jie Jingjue said.
"You stay ho and take care of Jing Qi." Jie Jingchen’s words stopped Jie Jingjue in his tracks.
Qin i pulled the keys from her pocket and gave them to Jie Jingjue. ’Faced with a choice between a miscarriage and her period, she chose the miscarriage.’
And so, one of the officers escorted Jie Jingchen and Qin i to the hospital, while Father Xu, Xu Chunyan, and Jie Jingwei were taken to the police station.
When Mrs. Xie heard what had happened, she imdiately created a dical file for Qin i confirming a miscarriage. As a doctor, her professional ethics should have forbidden her from falsifying a record. However, she was also a mother. So, in the end, she created the record.
With that, the story of Qin i’s miscarriage was solidified. Before they even returned ho, the news had already spread through the neighborhood like wildfire, causing an uproar.
Liu Guihua wasn’t detained for long before being released. Jie Jingchen had already made arrangents: Father Xu would only be let go if he and Qin i provided a signed letter of forgiveness.
Qin i lay in bed, her head wrapped in a towel, receiving well-wishes from the won in the neighborhood.
So were sympathetic, so were gloating over her misfortune, so were just there for the drama, and a few offered their genuine concern.
For instance, there was Second Auntie.
"Jing Si’s wife, you must be careful while recovering from this. Don’t be careless. Especially avoid cold water, or you’ll have problems down the line." Second Auntie sat by the bed and tucked the blanket around Qin i. "And Doctor Qiao... honestly. After you’ve had a miscarriage, you’d think she’d take so ti off to co and look after you."
"The hospital is busy; my mom couldn’t get ti off." Qin i managed a weak smile. The other won from the neighborhood had all gone ho, but Second Auntie, for whatever reason, showed no signs of leaving.
"Work is important, but a daughter-in-law is more important," Second Auntie said, disagreeing. Then she thought for a mont and seed to understand. "Then again, she’s a doctor. Saving lives is her duty... Sigh. How did things between you and the Xu Family get this bad?"
Qin i just smiled without saying a word. It was a difficult topic to explain. ’The "miscarriage" was just a coincidence,’ Qin i thought. ’If my period hadn’t started right then, how would Jie Jingchen have gotten us out of that ss?’ She recalled the kick from Father Xu that had sent the stone table flying. If that had hit Jie Jingchen, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
