She was also reminded not to underestimate Xu Chunyan’s father. While Xu Chunyan’s mother would throw a tantrum at the slightest disagreent and was nothing to be feared, her father would resort to violence without warning. It was best to be careful.

"Fourth Wife of Jing, I’m not trying to bla you, but don’t you practice Chinese dicine? How could you not have realized you were pregnant?" Second Auntie chided.

Qin i’s eye twitched. ’How was she supposed to answer that?’ "Second Auntie, as you know, a doctor can’t treat themself."

Qin i neither confird nor denied that she was pregnant.

"Fourth Wife of Jing, your second sister-in-law’s father is a handful. When you see him in the future, do your best not to provoke him." Second Auntie reminded her. "The Xu and Jie families are connected by marriage, so it’s not like you can just cut ties and never see them again."

"Mm, I know." Qin i nodded obediently, though she knew full well that even without her formal letter of forgiveness, Xu Chunyan’s father wouldn’t be locked up for long.

"Oh, right. Your mother-in-law is busy, so who’s going to take care of you during your recovery?" Second Auntie asked.

"Jie Jingchen," Qin i replied with a smile. She couldn’t think of anyone else besides Jie Jingchen.

Second Auntie thought for a mont but didn’t press the issue. Since Qin i hadn’t asked for help, it wouldn’t be right for her to volunteer to look after her. She decided she would talk to Doctor Qiao about it after her shift.

"Fourth Wife of Jing, you get so rest now. Don’t be too heartbroken. You and Jing Si are both still young. Once your body has healed, you can have as many kids as you want," Second Auntie said.

Qin i fell silent. ’Heartbroken? ? And what about the family planning policy? Is that just for decoration?’

Second Auntie left the room and pulled Jie Jingchen aside in the courtyard to give him so instructions. Surprisingly, Jie Jingchen listened patiently.

After seeing Second Auntie out, Jie Jingchen returned to the room, closed the door, and locked it.

"She’s gone now," Jie Jingchen said.

Qin i flipped over and sat up, yanking the towel off her head. "So, what now?"

"’What now?’ what?" Jie Jingchen asked in return.

"How are we going to end this whole miscarriage charade?" Qin i asked through gritted teeth.

"Why end it?" Jie Jingchen sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing his lower back. His gaze was deep as he looked at Qin i. "We have a miscarriage certificate from Mom. As far as anyone is concerned, you had a miscarriage."

The corner of Qin i’s mouth twitched, and a blush crept up her pale cheeks. She snatched a pillow and hurled it at Jie Jingchen, snapping, "You’re the one who had a miscarriage! Your whole family had miscarriages!"

Jie Jingchen caught the pillow, hugging it as he studied Qin i.

Qin i was furious. She knelt on the bed in front of him. "Jie Jingchen, did you do this on purpose?"

"I have no idea what you’re talking about," Jie Jingchen feigned ignorance.

"So capable! A regular fortune-teller, aren’t you!" Qin i glared at Jie Jingchen, grinding her teeth. Her tone was laced with a mixture of sarcasm and grudging admiration.

’Jie Jingjue hadn’t followed her to the grocery store—he’d gone straight to the police station. Jie Jingjue wasn’t smart enough to think of that himself; it had to be Jie Jingchen pulling the strings.’

"This had to be a big deal. Your second sister-in-law’s father needed to be locked up," Jie Jingchen said with a grave expression. "Mom ruined Xu Chunwang, and he’s the only son in the Xu family. The others are no threat, but Father Xu is the one I can’t underestimate."

’Carry on the family line... Her mother-in-law’s kick had been ant to end Xu Chunwang’s ability to have children, effectively extinguishing the Xu family’s lineage. How could Father Xu not be absolutely furious?’

’She had been the one to instigate it, and his mother had been the one to carry it out, yet Father Xu had chosen to take revenge on Jie Jingchen.’

’Qin i had only dislocated Xu Chunwang’s jaw; she never would have considered ruining him for life. Mrs. Xie, on the other hand, appeared gentle and elegant, but when she was truly provoked, her actions were vicious and utterly rciless.’

Qin i tilted her head and stared at Jie Jingchen, asking, "Is he really that tough?"

"Very tough," Jie Jingchen replied with great solemnity.

"What good is being tough? We live in a society with laws. Break them, and you get arrested." Qin i threw back the covers, put on her shoes, and got out of bed. She picked up the hot water thermos, poured so into an enal mug, and took a sip. "Without my statent of forgiveness, he’s not getting out so fast. A few days of ’re-education’ inside might just cool his temper."

Jie Jingchen fell silent, his expression growing heavier. He was nowhere near as optimistic as Qin i.

"Here, have so water. Stop looking so grim. We’ll cross that bridge when we co to it." Without thinking, Qin i handed the enal mug to Jie Jingchen.

Jie Jingchen’s eyes flickered, and he froze for a second before taking the mug from her. He took an elegant sip. "Qin i, Father Xu won’t let this go easily. You have to be more vigilant when you go out from now on."

Qin i laughed and waved her hand dismissively. "You’re the one who needs to be on guard. You’re his target. He already hates you because our mom ruined Xu Chunwang, and now you’ve played him and gotten him sent to the police station. It’s a new grudge piled on top of the old one. Jie Jingchen, you’d better watch out."
