When Zhou Mikang and Chuxia returned to the compound, it was already 8:30 p.m. Worrying that Lin Baohe and Zhao Yulan might be concerned, the pair first went over to Old Master Wan’s to check-in.
Sure enough, as soon as they opened the door, Lin Baohe and Zhao Yulan stood up eagerly, their eyes unable to hide their worry. “Have you eaten?” Zhao Yulan asked.
“Mom, we’ve eaten. Have you, Grandpa, and Dad eaten as well?”
Old Master Wan chuckled. “I’ve eaten my fill, but your dad and your mom, they just picked at their rice, barely a half-bowl each. It’s practically the sa as not eating at all.”
Lin Baohe hurried to explain, “Sitting around all day, I don’t get very hungry, just a bit and I’m full.”
“But I didn’t see you eat so little when you were just sitting around these past few days. You just don’t believe what this old man says.” Elder Wan said bluntly, “Now that they’re back, you can eat in peace, right?”
Having lived with Zhao Yulan and Lin Baohe for so long, Old Master Wan cared for them as if they were his own children, yet he was a little angry that they didn’t take better care of themselves.
Noticing Zhao Yulan and Lin Baohe’s discomfort, Zhou Mikang quickly smoothed things over, “I haven’t had my fill either. Dad, Mom, how about you join for another bite to eat?”
Hearing her son-in-law hadn’t eaten enough, Zhao Yulan made a beeline for the kitchen, almost bumping into Sister-in-law Yin, who was bringing out steaming dishes of food, scaring her into taking a step back. She exclaid in surprise, “Sister Yin, you’ve already ward up the food?”
Sister Yin replied playfully with a smile, “Yeah, now you can eat with peace of mind, can’t you?”
“Do bother to heat it up once more, I’m so sorry for the trouble.” Zhao Yulan said as she went into the kitchen to get other dishes, and Chuxia also went in to help.
Lin Baohe looked uncertainly at Zhou Mikang, “Are you really not full?”
“Of course.” Zhou Mikang replied with a wry smile, “I was too busy to eat at noon, and the food Chuxia and ili brought from the canteen in the evening was a little scant. My stomach’s been empty.”
“Are you that busy with work?” Zhao Yulan looked at her son-in-law, troubled, “If you keep being this busy, how will your body handle it?”
“Mom, rest assured, I’m strong, a bit of busyness is nothing.” To prevent his parents-in-law from delving deeper, Zhou Mikang quickly invited, “Dad, Mom, let’s eat.”
“Alright, let’s eat first.” Zhao Yulan quickly served her son-in-law a bowl of rice, then turned to her daughter, “Chuxia, do you want to eat a bit more?”
“I’m full.” Chuxia waved her hand, “Hurry and eat; I think Grandma and Grandpa Zhou must not have gone to bed yet. We should quickly go back after eating. Dad, Mom, when I’m not here, you should eat as you normally do. How could I rest easy if you’re like this?”
Old Master Wan quickly added, “Yeah, and you’re fussing about rushing back. If you went back, how much would you worry?”
The couple just smiled sheepishly and did not reply. They, of course, wanted to stay with their daughter, but living like this permanently, without their title and proper standing, just didn’t sit right with them.
Chuxia was also very conflicted inside—Zhou Mikang was about to be deployed.
Alright, perhaps others weren’t entirely certain about this issue, but as soone who ca from the 21st century, she knew clearly that this was a real war.
If her parents knew about it, God knows how worried they would be.
As for today’s events, she and Zhou Mikang had agreed not to tell any of the elders. Of course, people like Old Master Zhou and Zhou Jingping couldn’t possibly be kept in the dark, so they’d just have a separate chat with them.
They’d try to keep it hidden from everyone, including Old Madam Zhou and Lin Yanqiu. Otherwise, once Zhou Mikang left, they would indeed confine Chuxia in the house and not allow her to move around alone.
Given what happened today, Zhou Mikang initially thought it would be best if Chuxia didn’t go out to work for a while. True, the Xiao family father and son had been caught and it was unlikely they’d get a chance to co out again, but factional struggles were always there, as were those who disdained the Zhou family.
