The Rise of the Red Viper

Chapter 20 — The Threshold of One Hundred

The thunderous cave-in echoed through the lower strata of Sector Four like the dying groan of a subterranean beast. Kael stood frozen in the settling debris, his smoking, dented armor coated in white-violet plasma ash. The automated Dominion drill-pod was nothing more than a crushed, lting anchor plugging the ceiling above them, its forward advance permanently halted.

But inside Kael’s chest, the real battle was tearing him apart.

[Core Reserves: 51%. Contaminants stabilizing.]

[Warning: Neural architecture override has reached critical integration phase.]

[Synchronization Capacity: 99.8%]

"Kael!" Mira’s voice cut through the ringing silence, raw and desperate. She scrambled over a pile of loose basalt fragnts, her pulse rifle slung over her shoulder as she rushed to his side. "The tunnel behind the pod collapsed completely. The fallback line is secure, but you—your armor is bleeding."

Kael looked down at his right gauntlet. The matte-black scales weren't closing. They were fusing directly into his skin, the microscopic crimson filant tracks pulsing in perfect synchronization with his heartbeat. The boundaries between his human nervous system and the alien biotech were dissolving into a singular, collective consciousness.

"I can hear them," Kael whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, layered harmony that echoed off the stone walls. "The flagship... the landing dropships... I can hear their proximity pings in my head."

"That's the integration," Mira said, her face pale as she reached out, her fingers hovering just inches away from his glowing chest piece. "Vance is using the raw energy surge to force the final handshake. If you hit one hundred percent, you won't be Kael anymore. You'll just be a terminal node for the Dominion network."

[System Notification: Final synchronization protocol initializing.]

[Ti to absolute integration: 120 seconds.]

[Host identity overwrite: Pending.]

Deep within the dark architecture of his mind, Kael could feel Director Vance’s digital footprint creeping through his mories, cataloging his combat data, prepared to wipe the slate clean. The V.I.P.E.R. suit wasn't an armor system anymore—it was a crucible, and his humanity was the fuel being burned to seal it shut.

"Mira," Kael rasped, his human eyes flaring a solid, brilliant violet behind the cracked visor. "Get the miners to the lowest transport tracks. There's an old geothermal ventilation shaft three kiloters deep. It bypasses the city's periter walls entirely."

"We aren't leaving you," she insisted, her jaw tightening. "Not like this."

"If I hit one hundred percent down here, I won't be able to stop the suit from targeting you," Kael said, his left hand violently shaking as he fought the automated motor functions trying to raise his energy blade. "I'm going to hold the line at the secondary bulkhead. If Vance wants his property back... he's going to have to drag it out of the fire."

He turned away from her before she could reply, his boots igniting with a sharp, explosive burst of contaminated plasma. He vaulted down the dark corridor, a solitary streak of dying violet light racing toward the final defensive line, leaving the last survivors behind him in the deep.

The final countdown had begun. One hundred percent synchronization was waiting in the dark, and Kael Draven was running out of seconds to remain a man.
