Chapter 8 — The Art of Disruption

The explosion of the cargo drone lit up the dust storm in a brilliant, violent plu of orange and black. The shockwave tore through the courtyard, sending fragnts of shattered plating whistling past Kael’s helt.

[Core reserves: 104% (Saturated).]

[Warning: Thermal absorption approaching safe threshold limits. Dissipate excess energy.]

"Understood," Kael muttered, his voice cold, steady, and utterly synchronized with the suit.

Before the smoke could even settle, the Dominion troops unleashed a desperate wall of suppressive fire. Blue plasma bolts tracked across the landing pad, tearing the concrete to ribbons where Kael had been standing a split second before. But he was already a blur of motion.

He didn't activate his camouflage. He didn't need to. With his energy reserves overflowing from the blast, the kinetic feedback in his leg structures allowed him to move with terrifying, jagged speed. He zipped through the crossfire, a crimson phantom cutting through the thick red fog.

He closed the distance to the nearest pair of heavy exo-suits before they could re-index their heavy repeaters.

The first soldier didn't even have ti to gasp. Kael drove his right fist into the man's midsection, executing the suit's kinetic pile-driver routine at point-blank range. The condensed pressure punched straight through the reinforced gold alloy, buckling the chest plate inward with a sickening tallic crunch. The soldier was launched backward, crashing into his squadmate and sending them both skidding across the ash-slick deck.

"He's too fast! We can't lock on!" a comm-channel voice panicked. "Heavy squad, deploy standard thermal nets—"

The voice cut off sharply as Kael materialized directly behind the commander. Instead of drawing his blade, he gripped the back of the commander’s heavy power pack.

[Interface connection established. Comncing localized energy drain.]

The Enhanced Energy Conversion sub-routine went to work instantly, but inversely. Instead of drawing from the environnt, the V.I.P.E.R. suit aggressively siphoned the high-grade plasma cells right out of the commander's exo-suit. Bright blue lines of electricity were violently dragged out of the power pack, flowing down Kael’s gauntlets and shifting into his trademark crimson glow.

The commander’s suit went completely dark, its heavy limbs locking up as it beca a multi-ton tal coffin. Kael shoved the useless husk aside, letting it fall like a felled tree.

"Fall back! Fall back to the security periter!" the remaining soldiers scrambled, their disciplined formation completely shattered by a single, unseen predator.

Kael didn't pursue them. He let the remaining troops retreat into the defensive ring surrounding the command frigate. His objective wasn't to slaughter the entire battalion on the open tarmac; it was to stall them, to turn Verrion City’s ruins into an absolute logistical nightmare for Director Vance.

He stepped back into the shadows of a collapsed structural pillar and willed his armor to ripple. The overlapping scales shifted, swallowing the light once more as Adaptive Camouflage took hold.

High above the landing zone, inside the sterile, bridge of the Dominion command frigate, a man stood with his hands neatly clasped behind his back.

Director Vance wore a pristine, high-collared white uniform that contrasted sharply with the dark, monitors surrounding him. His face was a mask of cold, calculated indifference, his eyes tracking the frantic biotric teletry of his ground forces dropping off the grid one by one.

"Report," Vance commanded, his voice a quiet, precise instrunt.

An officer at the console turned, sweat glistening on his forehead. "Director... the ground squad has lost the primary cargo drone. The seismic spikes are compromised. Ground forces report an encounter with an unidentified hostile variant utilizing high-frequency kinetic weaponry and advanced optical distortion."

Vance’s eyes narrowed slightly, a faint, cold smile tugging at the edge of his lips. He didn't look angry. He looked entirely fascinated.

"Optical distortion synced with kinetic output," Vance murmured, tapping a finger against his wrist communicator. "The integration trics are astonishing. The civilian pool we selected from Verrion-9 was supposed to be completely incompatible. Yet, Subject 47-A is manipulating the core sub-routines with an efficiency rating we haven't seen in the automated test trials."

"Sir? Should we deploy the secondary orbital drop?" the officer asked, his hand hovering over the deploynt matrix. "If the rebel elent gains access to the lower vault infrastructure—"

"Let him play his hand," Vance interrupted quietly, his gaze fixing on a wirefra map of the subterranean tunnels flashing on his main screen. "He thinks he is protecting the survivors. He thinks he is fighting a war of attrition. He doesn't realize that every ti he triggers a Tier 2 protocol, he is simply mapping his own neural pathways directly into our main data receivers."

Vance leaned forward, his reflection stretching across the glass window looking out into the raging dust storm.

"Let him break the periter. Monitor his energy signatures, locate the exact frequency of his core symbiote, and prepare the containnt net. I don't want him dead, officer. I want my property back."

Down in the dark, hidden behind a veil of falling ash and cloaked in total silence, Kael watched the frigate's heavy spotlights sweep over the burning wreckage.

His HUD flickered, a tiny, persistent system prompt blinking in the corner of his eye.

[System Status: Encrypted. Autonomy remains at 95%.]

Kael's jaw clenched beneath his mask. He looked up at the massive ship looming in the storm. Vance was tracking him. The realization didn't bring fear—it brought a deep, burning resolve.

The Dominion thought this was a retrieval mission. They thought they were hunting an asset.

Kael adjusted his stance, his cloaked fingers wrapping tightly around the hilt of his newly ford side-arm. He was going to show them exactly what happens when an asset decides to hunt back.
