Chapter 104: The Surveillance Grid (Part 2)

The heavy iron door to the underground foundry swung open.

The familiar, chaotic noise of Assessnt Hub 7 had been replaced by the quiet, focused hum of our own private workspace beneath the Obsidian Bungalow.

Rolf and I descended the spiraling stone stairs. The massive underground lab was bathed in the warm blue light of arcane holographic projectors.

Nyssa and Anise were standing over a wide drafting table, their heads bent together as they calculated load-bearing equations for the Ironclad prototypes.

Kaelith was sharpening her daggers in the corner, while Lysandra sat on a stool nearby, practicing the complex hand seals of her new illusion magic.

"Gather around," I commanded, my baritone voice cutting through the quiet hum of the lab. "The political board just shifted again."

My pack imdiately abandoned their tasks. They ford a tight half-circle around the drafting table, their eyes locked on .

"Rolf and I just finished a briefing with the Pri Minister and Chief Inquisitor Silas," I explained, leaning my knuckles against the cold steel of the table.

"They found the leak. It was Lord Aris, a high-ranking Ley Line Monitor in the Registry. He was heavily compromised by a parasitic Succubus charm. Valerius Thorne has been using him to intercept and rewrite our diplomatic letters."

Lysandra hissed, her maroon wings fluttering with imdiate disgust.

"Mind magic. It is a coward’s tool. They plant a sleeper agent, wrap his brain in a false sense of devotion, and use his clearance to blind the city."

"Exactly," I nodded, looking at the Succubus Queen.

"And because it is a magical charm, it bypasses standard security. Silas and his assassins are flying entirely blind. Valerius expects us to fight back with counter-scrying and magical wards. But if we play the magic ga, we lose. They have centuries of experience and infinite gold."

"So we flip the board," Anise deduced. A sharp, knowing smile touched her lips. She crossed her arms over her pristine white and gold armor.

"What are we building, Grik?"

I tapped the center of the drafting table.

"We are building radios."

Nyssa tilted her head, her erald eyes blinking in confusion.

"Radios? I am not familiar with that term in arcane engineering."

"It is a concept from my world," Anise explained to the scholar, her hazel eyes lighting up with genuine excitent.

"It is a thod of transmitting information instantaneously over massive distances using invisible, completely non-magical waves."

"We use the pre-industrial quartz and copper wiring from the Labyrinth," I continued, projecting a rough, three-dinsional schematic of a small earpiece onto the table.

"Nyssa, I need you to forge these crystals to vibrate at a very specific, high-frequency acoustic resonance. We are not using mana to send the ssage. We are using pure kinetic vibration."

Nyssa pushed her silver-rimd glasses up the bridge of her nose. Her brilliant mind processed the physics in a fraction of a second.

"Acoustic resonance," Nyssa whispered in absolute awe.

"If the transmission is purely kinetic, it will not disturb the ambient mana fields. The Zenith Academy’s scrying orbs will not register a single thing. It will be completely invisible to them."

"We build enough earpieces for Silas and his elite assassins," I ordered.

"We set up a central broadcasting array right here in this bunker. I will monitor the network. We give Silas five days to equip his n. On the sixth day, we locate every erratic, chard mana signature in the capital, and the Inquisitors execute Valerius Thorne’s entire spy network simultaneously."

Rolf cracked his heavy silver knuckles, a feral grin spreading across his face.

"A silent purge. I love it."

"Get to work," I told the crafters. "The shadow war ends this week."

---

High above the gri and soot of the mortal kingdoms, the air inside the Zenith Academy was cold, sterile, and suffocatingly tense.

Valerius Thorne stood in the center of his opulent, ivory-carved spire.

The Incubus Lord was staring down at a heavy, cream-colored parchnt resting on his marble desk.

The official wax seal of the Kingdom of Iron and Steam was stamped at the bottom.

The seal did not bear the mark of King Alaric. It bore the mark of King-Regent Marquee Hardsteel.

CRASH!

Valerius violently swept his arm across the desk.

The crystal wine decanter, the silver goblets, and a stack of ledgers shattered against the marble floor.

"He abdicated!" Valerius scread, his violet eyes flaring with unhinged, psychic fury.

"Alaric just rolled over and handed the entire kingdom to his chanic brother! Years of bribes, years of careful manipulation, completely erased in a single afternoon!"

Sitting casually on a velvet lounge chair near the arched balcony, Lady Seraphina Thorne did not even flinch at the shattering glass.

The stunning Succubus simply swirled a half-empty glass of blood-wine, watching her younger brother panic with a look of profound, bored disappointnt.

"You overplayed your hand, Valerius," Seraphina purred, her voice dripping with aristocratic venom.

"You gave a sledgehamr to a fragile puppet. King Alaric was a coward. The mont Marquee Hardsteel applied an ounce of pressure, your golden goose broke."

"It was the goblin!" Valerius snarled, pacing the room like a caged animal.

"Grik provoked Sir Vaelen into a public duel and crippled him. He used the distraction to let the Pri Minister stage a bloodless coup! And now look at this!"

Valerius pointed a shaking, pale finger at the cream-colored parchnt.

"It is an official invitation to a Continental Summit," Valerius spat out.

"Hardsteel is declaring the Cult of the Ashen Maw a rogue, independent terrorist organization. He is inviting the leaders of the Holy Alliance, the Beastman Tribes, and the Zenith Academy to discuss a united front against blood magic."

Seraphina took a slow sip of her wine. Her dark eyes narrowed with sharp, terrifying intellect.

"It is a trap," she stated plainly.

"A very elegant, very deadly political trap. Hardsteel knows we funded the cult. He knows we bred the Chiras. He is intentionally omitting our na from the public broadcast so we feel safe enough to attend."

"Then we decline the invitation!" Valerius shouted. "We ignore them!"

"And look guilty in front of the entire continent?" Seraphina sighed, shaking her head.

"If we do not attend a summit regarding a terrorist threat, we isolate ourselves. We have to go. They forced our hand."

Valerius ground his teeth together. He walked over to a pedestal holding a glowing, dark purple scrying orb. He slamd his hands onto the smooth glass, channeling his mind magic to connect with his deep-cover operatives in the Forge.

"Fine. We attend. But I will blind them before they even set the table," Valerius hissed.

"I will have Lord Aris incinerate the guest ledgers. I will have the Faceless Guild poison the Pri Minister’s food supply."

The Incubus Lord poured his mana into the orb.

Nothing happened.

The dark purple smoke inside the glass sphere swirled lazily, but the connection remained completely dead.

Valerius frowned. He pushed more power into the artifact, his forehead beading with sweat.

"Aris. Respond."

Silence.

He frantically shifted the magical frequency, reaching out for the psychic tethers he had buried in the minds of a dozen different sleeper agents scattered across the Kingdom of Iron and Steam.

The rchants.

Dead.

The guard captains.

Dead.

The scribes.

Dead.

Valerius stumbled backward away from the pedestal, his chest heaving in absolute horror.

"They are gone," Valerius whispered, his voice trembling.

"The entire network. Every single chard agent is offline. How did they find them? Silas does not have the magical capacity to track my psychic tethers! It is impossible!"

Seraphina finally set her wine glass down. The bored amusent vanished entirely from her beautiful face. She stood up, her dark dress of spun shadow flowing seamlessly around her legs.

"It is not impossible, little brother. You are just too arrogant to see the truth."

She walked over to the shattered glass on the floor, her eyes cold and calculating.

"The goblin is not playing by your rules," Seraphina said, her voice a low, dangerous hum.

"He is not using traditional magic to counter your spells. He has introduced sothing entirely alien to the board. He blinded you in a single day."

Valerius stared at his sister, genuine fear finally penetrating his pride.

"What do we do?"

"We stop treating him like a lucky rat," Seraphina commanded.

"We prepare for an actual war. Gather the High Council. Empty the armories. When we march into the Kingdom of Iron and Steam for this Summit, we will bring enough firepower to turn their tal city to ash. It should be enough to send a warning. Sothing like ’Start the War if you are ready to suffer idiotic losses.’ A Statent."
